If you have to get to the point of slapping your kids you haven't dicsiplined them from early on. The key of disciplin is to follow through. Make the kids respect you and show them that you mean business. Disciplin can be wrapped in a game. In return they will understand and respect you. Hitting them does nothing or makes things worse.

The people suggesting slaps etc have no idea about child psychology. The reasoning behind the naughty step is exactly the same as what teachers (should) use in schools. It gives the child a choice - it makes them responsible for their own actions and their consequences. If consistently applied, in the long run it means kids will choose the desired action logically and won't resent their parents for it. Using unclear consequences doesn't work as consistently, and doesn't instill responsibility.
