I was in 5th grade, in Portland Oregon. My English teacher was the 3rd runner up to be onboard the shuttle. Since she was a participant, we were allowed to watch it in class, instead of learning stuff.. I dont remember exactly the reaction of my fellow classmates, but I knew the second it lit up, that Challenger was no more. I wonder now, if all the things about et's being on the moon to be true, if this was a warning not to push them too far. Either way, Peace and Light to those sevenastronauts
I was 9 years old in 1986, living in Fort Lauderdale, and all the teachers took us outside to watch the launch as it was clearly visible from where we were. As soon as the smoke lines separated from the shuttle into different groups, and when it was obvious something wasn't quite right, the teachers all told us to hurry inside the school. They thought debris could be coming down and hit anywhere. It was a cold day with perfect blue skies. I'll never forget it.
We bought our first two piece VHS portable video camera/tuner in 1982. We had friends that had Sony units for several years. We were hardly rich or cutting edge at the time and I find it unbelievable that this could be the only amateur video of the launch.
I was an admissions tourguide and a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida when this happened. I had just given a tour to a prospective student and his mother and we paused on the steps of the Admissions building to watch the launch. I said, "If you look carefully, you might be able to see SRB separation." Suddenly, someone stuck their head out the front door of the building and said, "The shuttle just blew up!"
In college for Aviation and we were all together having a party watching the launch. It did not turn out to be a very good party. A lot of us got really drunk.
This video seems so FAKE. Most people couldn't even afford home videos back then in the 1986. Listen to what they are saying "It looks brighter than usual" come on I smell a ballon boy day.
I remember that day. I was in NC and we didn't have school because of freezing rain or sleet. My Dad called me from his work to see what had happened. It was a sad day, Ron McNair was from Lake City South Carolina. Thanks AVWeb for posting the video.
Yeah I was getting ready for school in North Queensland, Australia when that footage came on the breakfast news. It was the first time a far away event touched me deeply and I remember crying and being sad for days. I know now what a compromised endeavour the space shuttle program was but it remains impressive, as do those who have ridden it into orbit. Seeing this and hearing the developing doubt and concern in this guys voice just took me back to that day.
I dunno, I'm not American, but this allways breaks my heart, seeing it. I know that people die in huge numbers in crazy disasters all over the world but these people had the hopes of a better world on resting on their shoulders. But I also think they would've wanted us to move on. The cancellation of the "Constellation" programme is a huge mistake..!
@a300pilotster Yep, money, political pressure and ignorance is what killed 6 people. People go to jail for downloading a stupid song from the internet but out of the idiots that ignored Morton Thiokol's warnings about the O-rings not sealing properly in the cold weather at the time of launch, none of them went to prison......instead they hid behind the security envelope of a corporation and since a company cannot go to prison, it was simply sued. America truly is the land of the idiot!
I'm so glad that my cousin that lives California goes to a school named challenger that honors these people
