Group C was the golden era for Le Mans. Why don’t the FIA and whoever else owns the rights to these races listen to the actual fans and bring back the same type of regulations which allowed these power crazy Group C cars to flourish. I hate the horrible sounding diesel cars where they win not on speed but the fact they can do more laps without refueling. Ban diesel! Racing isn’t meant to be green, leave that do-gooder greeny rubish for road cars not racing.
@bill2603 Yeah they were amazing! The f1 was very disappointing, only 7 turned up on the grid for the "Historic SUPERprix" and it was very uneventful! The rest of the day was great but i was amazed that they advertised it with a JPS and one of the wonderful red and white classic Mclarens when they werent even on track :P There was one particular group C car (it was white, im not sure of the make) that really tore through my ears next to the bridge heading into the trees ;P
the beauty of these cars rivals with...dare I say it..prewar Grand prix cars....absolutely amazing. That being said...tic-tac should never ever sponsor a car again using that livery.....just no
Group C was the BEST racing category ever existed. V12 from Jaguar, V8 from Mercedes, Rotary from Mazda, Flat-6 from Porsche.... so much diversity that was fun to watch. And auto manufacturers competed for their pride, which added more excitement in the show. Simply the BEST.
Big wings, fast cars, lots of fun. I just cant believe in a few short years these cars will be running in the Rolex Historics at Laguna Seca. As much as todays cars are technologically advanced, they are severly restricted, so we will never see the side of LMP cars, of what they should be able to run, so as far as im concerned Group C/ GT1 classes from 84-99 were some of the greatest racing today....except 1960-1971, that will forever be the greatest racing decade.
It only ended because the FIA was(and still is, if recent F1 seasons are any indication) full of complete morons. At least today's Le Mans cars are putting on almost as good a show for us.
And I daresay that many of today's LMPs look a lot better than the old Group C/IMSA GTP cars. But even so, those old designs will always be some of the greatest ever.
I just wish the Corvette GTP could've been a competitive Le Mans racer.
FIA tries to push the technology. Just think, today's cars are probably close to being able to keep up, but with regulations many times more restrictive. That shows progress. Sure, it isn't as awe-inspiring, but, alas, it works. Group C will always be #1 to me, though. It's just classy.
IMO, there is no XJR 14 in this vidéo. I see a Silk-Cut XJR9 V12 and a Budlight XJR10 V6. IMSA XKR14 had same shape than purple SlkCut XJR14. Guys, do you know what car is the #112? Looks like a Ferrari P4/Jaguar XJR 14 mix!
#112 is a Spice AK93 GTP, the only GTP version built. 3 AK93s bodykits were produced for '93, one each went to the Comptech and Brix Acura Camel Lights teams, the other went to Tennyson Racing and was raced in GTP. There is no XJR-14 in the video. There were only 3 XJR-14s built, though there are 2 in private hands these days but they do not race unfortuantely. One of the XJR-14s is based at Highcroft Racing in Connecticut.
i thought that was the bud light jag that raced in group c and imsa in those years. are you sure. i'm not trying to start anything but i swear that was the model of that car. davy jones raced it in imsa, it had the double rear wing so did the toyota's 99 and 98. please let me know i would also like more info on group c stuff. my dad has alot of pics from that era. when we used to attend races. let me know.
XJR-14 can immediately be differentiated from the AK93 Spice by its front nose wing and radiator location. AK93 doesnt have one (nose wing), XJR-14 does. And the AK93's radiator is its nose, on the XJR-14 they are located in the side pods with prominent inlets for them there. By the end of the GTP era many cars had twin-tier rear wings, hell, even the Joest 962 had one. Google search both cars and compare.
the jag is the xjr 14, well at least i think that was the model when it was raced in imsa but yes group c rocks. i miss all this good stuff!!!! what happen to all these amazing cars
too fast too dangerous ... so someone that had a voice said let's get new toys....go to anHSR vintage event and see these and F1, muscle cars etc....they all still run the piss out of them....remember Bob Akin another great driver lost.
It all went pear shaped after 1990 went the Group C rules were replaced by the 3.5 litre rules, making the cars basically 2-seat F1 cars (which had identical engines), while costs escalated forcing out private teams. The races became shorter too under teh new rules. This led to manufacturers losing interest and focus on other forms of motorsport. The 3.5 litre cars were spectacular though - the quickest type of sportscars ever. World sportscar racing has never recovered.
Its called an Argo, its got a chevy engine in. I work on this car. It used to be open top but had to be closed for race regs to enter the group c series.
