  • great bass riffs

  • 8 people´s

Y U NO LIKE THIS VIDEO

  • 1:30 Not bad face \m/

  • 1:42 he looks like dracula

  • he is playing with the pickup cover still on.

  • loves jason

  • does anyone know which effects he uses in this video?

  • @DerPeter444 Actually I don't think he uses any effects in this video. Just a straight clean bass sound.

  • its pretty funny though how he talks about writing songs, oh this is my second song and ive been in the band for 5 years haha. Rock on Jason XD

  • The best way to play it. RESPECT JASON.

  • well, its funny, Jason is my idol and i just got kicked out of my band yesterday...and i play bass, they kicked me out because they thought guitar and drums are more superior to bass, and that it's gay.

  • @metallicaman31130 bass is way coole rthan guitar

  • @metallicaman31130

excuse me? which band kicks a bassplayer out for playing bass?

how should the guitars get balls if they have no bass behind them?

this band is probably one of the most fucked up i´ve heard of xD

good that I, as a bassplayer, write the songs, which makes me kind of a lead person and I can´t get kicked out :)

  • We are all Child of Misery

  • This song it's why i play bass T.T

  • i know jason was picked on by the rest of them but hes a fucking god and should have put up with them

  • Fucking beautiful

  • Cliff and Jason made Metallica Robert not so much Miss you Jason RIP CLIFF

  • to anyone who says bass shouldnt be picked, there was such a time when there was no such thing as a pick for guitars, so everyone used their fingers. i love bass with a pick cause it a cleaner sound....as opposed to the someone slappin it wit their fingers imo

  • Jason every reason to leave. They were fucking dicks to Jason.

  • @ThatKrookedVulture Totally agree with you. Fact: Metallica only let Jason Newsted contribute to 3 (ONLY THREE!!!!) songs in his 15 years as their bass player (thats less writing credit than Dave Mustaine, who was only in Metallica for 1 year). So it would totally seem reasonable that he would want to find a side project as an outlet for composing music, but no, Metallica wanted to limit and control him and his art. Fuckin assholes......

  • Who cares how Jason plays bass? It's what he plays and the feeling you get from it, not how he plays it.

  • This man has all my respect till the day i die. (Indeed). Jason and Cliff brought some to metallica that unfortunally trujillo doesnt have, Soul. Jason Help metallica achieve the sick sound of AND JUSTICE FOR ALL which to me is the baddest album period. They will never sound like that, EVER.

  • This man has all my respect till the day i die.

  • @greyoldfellow me too man.

  • Just for the record, Kirk didn't want Jason to leave, he even said so. It was just James and Lars that wanted him gone.

  • its not that different from the one in the album

  • :( he is getting old

  • 8 dislikes from james kirk lars rob bob rock fleming na loveyou jason

  • I know its prolly a stupid question, but what is that metal plate over the strings by the mics?

  • @Guandy the pickguard?

  • @Guandy It just keeps dust from getting on the pickups

  • @Itachifan186 but it also keps him from having to play correctly, by plucking instead of picking. but i am not going to go off on you about that. it is not your fault Jason picks his bass. sorry, i am just old school

  • @frtknokr What? I'm a bass player who uses a pick, and Jason is my biggest influence as a bass player....

  • @Itachifan186 a bass is supposed to be plucked, not picked...a pick is for a guitar and former guitar-playing bassists

  • Respond to this video...but Jason filled a need and that need was for Metallica to survive the death of its bass player, Cliff Burton and Jason did that nicely. I am not his biggest fan, but he did a fine job with metallica.

  • Comment removed

  • @frtknokr First of all, I didn't say jack shit about Jason's style. Second of all, learn to fucking speak English. Third of all, you're a dumbass.

  • @Itachifan186 well thank goodness that Jason influenced you to take up the best instrument ever. I guess what is important is that you play a bass and not that you pick or pluck it. what made you think that I was speaking of Jason's style?I just have an old-school mentality and believe that a bass ought to be plucked. What havedid I saiy that is not in english? I have done absolutely nothing to warrant you swearing at me, please explain what has angered you.

  • ok this might be a wild idea but just think about it.....

wouldnt this bass part sound great with eminem rapping to it???

  • @randyvanhalen84 WTF?!

  • @Patronux fool dont be a hater. i love metallica. i do. saw em live and everything.im jus saying. when u hear this bass part by itself i can just imagine eminem free styling to it...now get off my sack

  • i love how wherever he's playing this, on this or live concerts, there is complete silence.

  • i always feel sorry for jason and how lars james and kirk treated him while he was in metallica, he never asked for cliff to die he just wanted to help them out and continue his legacy after cliffs death. and the rest of the guys were often dicks to him

JASON, YOU ARE ONE OF THE REASONS I LOVE METALLICA!!!

  • I like this into ALOT more

  • Epic.

  • Incredible bass riff

  • cliff and rob may be better bass players than jason technically. and cliff was a genius, so creative and original.

but seriously... from what I know about these 3 great metallica bass players. Jason had the most soul and energy. I really dont see cliff or rob comming up with such beautiful soulful music like this piece by jason... he really plays from his fucking heart.

    what a great guy!

  • @fkyou2slut to live is to die intro is all I'm going to say to that.

  • @fkyou2slut Cliff did Anastesia, and orion atleast.

  • Beautiful

  • Jason is probably my favorite member of all the Metallica alumni.

  • lol main contribution. more like his only contribution.

  • awesome ,,totally fucking awesome newstead rules, the jaded bastards should have givin him more input on the tunes,,,,,, my favorite song from the black album, and it,s many others as well,,,lars is a spoild f^$@#%asshole

  • this is just a ripp-off from cliff burton!!

anyone everlistened to anasteshia pulling teeth ? try listing to the beginnin and ask yourself where jason got his riff

  • @twobber And the beginning of Cliff's solo is just the keyboard

line from Blue Oyster Cult's (Don't Fear)The Reaper

  • EPIC song! BUT creepy hands :D

  • It's so pure and beautiful, it' comes from his soul!

  • Comment removed

  • i fuckin love it

  • I could listen to that riff all day. It's really too bad they didn't make My Friend of Misery an instrumental.

  • Jason, a minha razão do caralho eu tocar baixo.

Amá-lo, Jason. Vocês são os melhores! ow mais nao pode esqueser do Cliffit pow eli que crio a My Friend of Misery

  • Cliff would be proud of jason for his ability to play bass r.i.p. cliff

  • simplely beautiful..

  • Cliff is the reason i play bass!

  • porra vc e Demais sei que um dia poderei ir conheser vc + para min vc eo Cliff sao os Melhores

  • Why does everyone have to say epic about everything? That word is really fucking shit now.

  • @jacksprat1990 Its a trend, it'll pass. Some retards just stick with it longer than others.

  • It is just so pure... pure awesomness I dont get tired of listening to this bassline so epic!

  • What is amazing is that Jason's two writing credits, Blackened and Misery and easily amongst the top 10 songs in MetallicA's entire catalog!

  • @Rioth, right on man Blackened kicks so much fucking ass! song has a SUPER badass riff!

i can totally mosh and headbang to that song = )

goshdangit wish james and lars would let newsted write more songs.

  • @Rioth I think he got writing credit on some of the songs from load and reload. Or...?

  • @EvenL33tland You are right. I checked wikipedia and a song called "where the wild things are' from reload has jason listed.

  • fucking amazing

  • no he left caz metallica sucks and no likes them any-more also he doesnt like being a skapegoat.

  • @kidpein man some many people fucking love metallica so dont even

  • @tjmmaiden only caz they were good in the 80's metallica is some shit now.

  • Jason i know u've got better shit to do than checking out videos on youtube of yourself (lol) but u seriously kick ass, that shit sent shivers down my spine at 1:08

I mean my god! always found the most impressive about musicians to be the creative part of it and that was a fucking masterpiece! too bad it didn't end up as an instrumental, u definitely would've deserved that man!

  • jason (L)

  • @1:07 ! I can play this on my bass all up to that point. The thing is that it doesn't show up in my book, it has a different part that's nothing like that, could someone find that spesific part for me and respond with it? thanks!! PS THIS IS AMAZING great fluency and accuracy.

  • its easy. its the same thing as the part before it but i think its on the 7 and 5 frets? idk try that. im away from my bass right now but im pretty sure thats what it is. you should be able to figure it out from there. message me if you need more help

  • @grandpag29, it's 10th and 9th frets

  • i could listen to that riff til i die

  • Comment removed

  • My Farorite Song

  • Jason was a beast.....

one day i hope that metallica will do something extreme..... for example.... They play Seek and Destroy at a charity gig..... BUT! The lineup would be as follows...... James, Lars, Kirk, Rob, Mustaine and Jason.... all of the old members and the current playing it together.... well... all apart from one :(

  • @metalkidmike666, you forgot Ron McGovney.

  • @ZenotheMetalWarrior Very true, my bad haha

  • ive gotta say

im not a fan of jason but this solo makes me sad a bit. reminds me cliff...

  • i just found out like last night that i was related to Jason

  • @roadogg316

    good 4 u

    no one cares

  • no joke, this is my favorite piece of music i have ever listened to. should have stayed an instrumental. newsted is one of the most underrated musicians alive!!

  • Jason, my fucking reason I play bass.

Love it, jason. You are the best!

  • @LOGdanne me to Him and cliff burton

  • @LOGdanne Amen, man.

  • this song should have been instrumental, would have been so much btr,

and kept the way jason wrote it

  • jason is a machine he should get back in the band

  • beautiful!

  • they should let jason write more songs but i like rob in metallica too

  • i use my fingers for this song

    so much easier i think

  • Ha, the only time I ever use a pick to play bass is for this song. :P

  • why did they let jason leave

  • They did not let him leave >.> he left because he wanted to do 2 bands, and metallica would not let him, so he left because of that

  • I'd kill someone to be able to play like that.

    Too bad I'm a plucker, not a picker. ._.

  • Now I truly see why jason left metallica... cuz Lars and James and kirk got all the writing credits...

  • no, cuz, when jason had this project that he had more creativity, james did not what it to go to the leanghs that it was goin to. so jason left

  • @lBobbyG James wrote nearly everything, though i agree why he could be angry.

  • @lBobbyG Actually Kirk doesnt get a lot of writing credits. Solos apparently aren't enough to get you a credit in most bands.

  • @lBobbyG I think you mean to say they wouldn't let Jason compose or contribute any music to the band.

  • @lBobbyG i will love metallica to the day i die but james kirk and lars were such ass holes to jason

  • @lBobbyG He said, 2nd song for writing credit..........

  • @lBobbyG And becouse Jason got some kind of head damage from headbanging..

  • @Masterfighterx if you watch live videos of Cliff, HE headbanged a LOT more than Jason ever could imagine to

  • @lBobbyG he actually never writes, even with echobrain he didn't wright

  • i think me and my band should cover this song, and the breakdown before the solo im going to play this whole thing

  • ohh myyyy gosshhh!!!!!!!!! I fucking want his tone so baaaadddd!!!!!!!!!

  • i think he wrote blackened

  • i fuckin love it! just learned it

  • me too it's an awsome melody!

  • Comment removed

  • he says this was the second full credit song, so which was the first?

  • The first it's Blackened, a second My Friend of misery and last one is Where the wild things are

  • yup makes sense

    blackened is the shit

  • jason newsted is my idle. hes the reason i play bass, and im only 14. this will be five years playing bass fo me

  • same story ^^

  • Whats different about the way he played and how it is on the studio thing? I can tell its darker sounding but i dont think thats what he was talking about

  • >> BlackoutMenace

on the studion version he doesnt go into the second riff, its just the first part being repeted

  • Jason Newsted rule!!!!!!!!

He´s the best bassplayer with a pick!!

  • Save Jason Newsted!

  • what is the name of that bass that he playing on that vid?

  • Jason Newstead

  • Comment removed

  • I meant guitar model))) But already know that this is Sadowsky

  • @MrVeeveepee Sadowski MS4

  • The way he expresses his emotions is through the sound of bass. That my friend was good play on the bass. Which When I listen to that song it makes me think as well. :)

  • very emotional song, he should have been given much more freedom to express himself. This is my fav song out of the black album.

  • 1:05 it looks like he's about to cry. The three or four songs he wrote with metallica were some of the best of that period, idk why they didn't let him write any more.

  • i wouldve cryed to knwing and remebering the good times he had with metallica

  • He's got a real nice crisp tone and I love that. Jason is very, very musically talented. It's great that Jason became a man and left Metallica. Now he has a band and he's free to play what ever he wants. He is now my 2nd favorite bass player. I'm a Metallica fan so you probably know my #1 favorite bassist. : )

  • cliff burton is and will be the best bassist player ever

  • true

  • lol thats ridiculous.....and downright ignorant...he's good, but not the best.....he doesnt compare to people like les claypool, victor wooten or jaco pastorius...

  • awesome

  • damn he got scary eyes, look at 1.42, kickass bassist tho

  • jason is really aswesome but i think he can make better musik if he didnt use a pik

  • ... how... pick and fingers are the same just pick can play faster .... and fingers can slap bass..

  • You dont play bass do you? what you said was pretty stupid, Pick and fingers are not the same Their are major tonal differences and no a pick cannot play faster I cant even run on 3 fingers and I can still play as fast as picked players uesing only 2 fingers also I mean if you play with a pick its nothing for you to throw it or tuck it between your figners if you wanna do a slap and pop Number to funk things up. please stop stating stupid false facts when you have no idea what your talking about

  • i do play bass just didnt realise you wanted to get detailed... of course you cant play any faster with a pick on the lower strings sense they vibrate so slow that you wont be able to hear a sound higher strings you can play faster... picks have a different sound yes

  • Comment removed

  • one of the best metallica songs metallica shouldnt let jason go he was awesome with them

  • he's the one who left though... but i wish he stayed.

  • yeah but he left cause the other members didnt have so much time for music cause they were not as devoted as jason was ...so it is like they let him go

  • I definitely would not say that they were not as devoted... James and Lars were both having personal problems and James went to rehab for a year, but jason wanted to go and do his own thing. Which i don't blame him but for some reason James didn't want him to because he felt like Metallica should be good enough for jason by itself. So when they said no jason just left... thinking they would try to get him back. but they didn't go after him.

  • tabs fo4r playing it his way would be nice

  • search for my friend of misery solo bass tabs on google.

  • AAAAAALLLTO TEMA!!

  • I want all the pricks who say that using a pick on a bass is oussy to sit down and shut the fuck up....i use a pick and i can outplay your ass anyday of the week and i can play faster and harder than someone using fingers.....and to the people who say that jason is only good for filling in for cliff...again sit down and shut the fuck up...people like you put a giant shadow on one of the greatest bass careers in history. Jason guided metallica through the pinnacle of their career and is my fave.

  • i completely agree.

  • calm your nipples using a pick for a bass is not its just not how playing bass was meant to be but wat ever...and your right jason did guid metallica through the pinnacle of there career and i think he did a way better job then wat rob is doing now but in my opinion if cliff didnt pass a way there would be no need for jason cuz he wouldve kept metallica from completly selling out

  • picking just makes a more refined sound then using your fingers and can help you play faster also.

only differences (i can think of) from playing with your fingers and playing with a pick on a bass

and all 3 of the bassists for metallica were amazing in there own way

  • 2 of them are still amazing

  • You make some valid points Jason is a great bass player I will aggree altho his style was not as aggressive as that of cliffs but Metallicas entire Feel changed after cliff died! Also there is nothing wrong with playing with a pick but the tone does not fit any song that had been written using fingers and thats just the way it is. Also Im doubting you can play faster and harder than all Finger pluckers, Im not saying your bad but myself and other local basists can rock Heavy with fingers! =)

  • I think that both of them had big shoes to fill , but jason was picked on out of grief, and robert came in at a time when metallica was a little more...mature with their actions, so i think robert had big shoes to fill, but he didnt have to carry the luggage of trying to be accepted. PLUS the fact that he was bigger than anybody else in the room.

  • Clif Burton was a true great bass player, I think that Jason was just carry on his legacy and so is Robert.

  • The sun is still waiting for me to close this fucking case. Pick up the phone and call him and ask....

  • Just Great.

  • He's great and always admired him for taking Cliff's place, if you know what I mean, and he did so well. Miss you Jas.x

  • Yeah, u know, filling in Cliff's shoes, thats tough, but Jason did great in doing so.

  • Comment removed

  • Burton was a true bass player ;)

I like Jason, I like the Black Album bass, and some bass song of Load and Reload, and Jason was the best second voice of Metallica, but persionally prefere the sound of finger bass.

Sorry for my poor english :P

  • Yeeh, I kinda disagree with you on the sound. But I agree with you that Jason has a killer voice.

Well, although it's just a matter of opinion, I think pick bass sounds better for metal.

  • jason was definately all for his music. great bass player
