  • This is a very good lesson! I've done tons of foot/hand combos but never this one. I can't wait to get on my drumset and try this!!!! Thanks so much for posting!

  • What drumsticks are those?

  • its easier if you incorporate this fill in loose phrasing. Playing straight can work, but it sounds more "clean" in loose phrasing.

  • use it as a polyrythm fill in 4 over 4 time!

  • brother Coltraine210, I WANT THAT SNARE..lol

  • do u have a double bass

  • hey brah what snare head is that? sounds sweet!

  • Nice. I think you showed some useful applications. And ya, sometimes you just have to feel it.

  • yES!.. its not about counting bars and shiet.. its like u say. u gotta FEEL it .. !!

  • I know I posted last week, but watching you teach this stuff, amazing. I am almost in disbelief at the quality of the skill and great teaching techniques. Keep the video's coming, very very inspiring. You take the mystery out of what sounds impossible to do. What you choose to show should be made into an instructional DVD. You make one I'll buy it, many thanks for sharing!!

  • This is super excellent! I love this type of stuff! Great job and really thank you for sharing !!!

  • hey check out a Tourque drum key they are great get one thats about 30$ from railroad bazaar its amazing

  • Why tape on the toms ...

  • Comment removed

  • double paras are groups of six, bro. It's all good

  • it's a double paradiddle alternating between your hand and feet.

    you've got nice groove man.

but it could easily be written into a song.

    it most likely is already.

  • That's cool man, you should try playing to the song if you want to really co-ordinate yourself. Check some of my vids you won't believe it. Can you follow the bouncing ball. lol!!!

  • would u mind posting a vid of how you tune ur snare drum? or maybe post it here, or like what kinda snare that is??

i have a steel shell 14", but i cant get a nice sound, i get an alright sound, but not like urs man, help me out!

  • Hey- I wish I knew an exact technique. I used to joke around and say that I tuned my drums by leaving them in my car after a gig. You have to consider the room that I am in in this video....what you are not seeing is that the door is open and outside the door is a huge hall covered in tiles, making the drum echo/crack like crazy. I will say, get a drum that weighs alot. Don;t go for a piccalo if ou want crack. Piccalos cut but they dont have any bottom end.

  • So, look for a heavy drum....I prefer metal, though I have seen one drum with wooden hoops that has some killer cut. The drum should be deep. A nice, tight head, but nothing too cranked, and a nice room and there you go. Have you tried your drum in different locations? You might be suprised. I have my snare in a place right now that kills all the good qualities you are asking me about.Long story short....heavy drum, deep, metal, tight head, good room. Good luck. You will find the right sound!

  • ya what he said, get a 14" snare somewhere from 6 to 8 inches deep (i want an 8" deep snare). Deep snares can get a really good "crack" sound. Tune both of the heads fairly high, make sure to tune the bottom head higher, if you want a good crack sound. If the drum sounds tune the heads lower. Just experiment. Try that on your snare you have now even.

  • edit: if the drum sounds "choked" tune it higher

  • alright cool thanks man, ill try, yea now it just sounds weird, idk its prob outa tune and its not that deep either, maybe 4"?

its a standard old pearl silver shell snare

    thanks ill try tho

  • hey man Around 3:22. This is the first time iv ever seen someone come up with a solution to stop me from hitting the piss out of my own hands while doing snare hihat licks. thank you very much!

  • Yeah that is a sneaky little move that should be more popular than it currently is. I stole that from a straight up inner city gospel drummer. He had little technique, but great feel. I don't know if he knew how practical the way he was doing it was, but either way, I stole it. Man I haven't seen this video in a long time. Tine sure does fly.

  • if u take a look at a vid by aaron spears, he uses that technique as well, its a vid by him just called drum n bass from his dvd search for it ull see, its jsut him jammin on the street

  • Brilliant! keep em coming!

  • wow, it's not that hard to theoretically understand that lick. You just have to know what subdivision you are playing and then write it down

  • Good job dude, verry helpfull !!! Put other videos like that man !!! Bless ya !!

  • Tnk you so much dude

  • Your snare drum is the PERFECT tone for gospel music. Nice Vid!

  • lol ur high tim sounds like some peoples kick haha but its still sick

  • tune your toms bro. whats the point if it doesn't sound good? thats all i am going to say. other then that, sick fill.

  • What kind of snare skin do you have?

  • can u say parididdle????

  • what's up with ur floor

  • ....could've been better if we could see what's going on in the kick drum.

  • Dude that's turbo progressive haha !! yeah!! I loled a lot when you said : u cannot notate it iunno XD haha your wrists are moving with a smooth & tecnical way, you rock dude great one

  • Really helpful!

  • sooo sick

  • damn that tom needs some tuning up. sounds like a floor tom

  • understood....stay in the pocket tho....

  • Artists love disciplined musicians. Every event is not a shed session.

  • koolness :D thanx 4 tha vid... u did do it fast but i feel wat ur sayin when u talked about findin ur own style n groove so ima just work on it n c where it fits ;) gracioso !

  • you can play it as a 5let which means you play 5 strokes in 1 beat

    kind of like a triplet

or if you want something easyer and that goes smoother with something like gospel, you can play it as 16th notes and assuming you accent every stroke with your right hand it would look like

    | RlRl | lRlR | llRl | RllR |

  • you sound like this dude i know named ben.

  • you play god but you think slow

  • cool, nice job bro

  • Great job, Really helpful! :)

  • cheers dude -- and BEAUTIFUL snare!

  • hey thats a cool idea

--- it can be noted quite easily

    its just 5/16ths over a quater - i would write it using 5 16 th notes with a 5 above like a triplet. .

itis a great lick - looking forward to trying this one out - thanks.. saul.

  • dude, what type of head do you use?

  • Looks to me like he uses a 'Clear Remo Ambassador' Snare head. Hope this helps. :)

I have a coated one and they are pretty sweet. I like them.

  • dis is exactly what I need to add in drum roll core.... thanks my man!

  • Amazing sounding snare!

  • colby you are a beast

  • i agree

  • dude, what drum head r u using. snare sounds sweet...

  • it's a good fill, but this guy really better concentrate on getting the hang of it himself before putting a half done fill on youtube

  • why is it always the people who have no vids of them selfs always hating on others?

  • Why? There's nothing wrong with showing a work in progress. He's just handing out an idea for everyone to use, not saying "look how awesome I play this"

  • Agreed. The effort is appreciated but one shouldn't call it a lesson unless the teacher has mastered first, eh? ;)

  • count it out, un-i-ver-sity. thats how you can remember it. its called like a 5olet

  • Quintuplet - and not it's not. A quintuplet is a group of five lasting a certain number of beats exactly - usually one or two. He's playing fives over sixteenth notes (which means each grouping lasts one and a quater beats) so its just called a group of five x

  • oh ok i got you. well in our snare music in indoor percussion had a lot fives. ah that is kind of confusing if you think about it too much.

  • its a foot paradiddle with yur hands its better to start off playin both hands twice at thee same time buh its a great lick

  • ima use this

  • wow he's right you just have to feel that fill to place it. It's alternations are similair to a paradiddle but it's only five beats. And could be the start of some the more uncommonly known rudiments but any way that's an awesome fill.

  • this gu plays in my band- he is so bad!!!he is always drunk and anytime a girl gets near the stage he screams at them- he also loves always steals peoples snare drums- he once stole a snare from a kid he babysat- he used to smoke pot in front of the kids too

  • 4 real?!?!?!!??!?!

  • wahahahaa, lauching :P

  • i think he should be stealing floor toms

  • thats a good one im gonna put that in shouting music,by the way he has to put some speed in this lick if your going to put it in some thing that slow

  • you da man wallace!

  • cool lick...thanks im practicing it :D

  • Bro i could listen to all day!!! if u can get real tight and consistent with ur playin there's no stoppin you

    gd luck :)

  • and yeah, he sounds drunk.. yeah.. but he's good! good drummer! must accept! then a good drunk drummer! haha :D

  • I hate cameras and speak weird when they are in front of me. Thanks though.

  • Sick fill dude...very Vinnie-esque!

  • he is always drunk!!!!

  • Good job. But actually it can be explained theoretically too. Just fyi. Group 5. So you can call it a Quintuplet overlay over 32nd notes. At least that's how you applied it here. And there are a zillion other ways to play that grouping as you said. Thanks for posting. I like hearing other drummers' thought processes for picking up new licks.

  • yup...i was totally thinking that, but that's my professor hat on. he STILL has a point with telling us NOT to break it down for the sake of feel and personal creativity. good point, though. i'm wit you

  • u say u vant do it probly so dont post vid if u cant fully do it but it dose sound good ure gettin dere

  • you sound drunk lol

  • haha

  • hey how should i tension my base pedal?

  • Test out different feels. Whatever is comfortable for you will work best for you.

  • The snare sounds real nice on this. But I agree with the guy below: that floor tom sounds terrible! In fact, the rack tom sounds like a floor tom, and the floor tom sounds like it has a paper bag for a drumhead. ;)

The concept of this fill is great, and I dig that somebody put it up on YouTube. It was funny to listen to him wax philosophical about each drummer having their own flavor, as well as practicing randomly on camera for the last minute or so of the video...I chuckled.

  • It sure does sound like a paper bag! But, the man got skills!

  • Nice drum lick! I'm gonna try it and see if i can apply it to my drumming. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • nice lick

  • our feets and hands have magic to play drums!

  • wow man

didn't think it was that easy

    im gonna start practicing tonight

  • are u doing a heel toe technique????

  • no- I am doing all toe action there. Sometimes I slide my foot a little, other times I keep it stationary, but always heel up. I have a video but no camera to upload to my comp., so soon I will have a tutorial.

  • would you youngsters stop asking how to do something and just practice real hard.

  • Everything in the video is sweet, except for that damn floor tom! The sound of it drives me crazy lol

  • thats good! how do u get your foot so fast what technique do u use

  • very good professional sounding

  • sir, how do you tune ur drums, i love its reverb!

  • Hey- Actually the reverb is probably the result of the room I am playing in. I do however tune my toms fairly low. The type of head plays a part as well.

  • do u have a double bass pedal or somethin????

    really fast bass

  • No- It is just one pedal. There are a lot of ways of producing that sound with just one foot, but if you can't find any vids online, if you just start practicing it slow you will get it.

  • the best single pedal drummer that have the fastest bass is Jojo mayer. Look for him in Modern Drummer festival 2005. The song is Jabon. it's really fast.

I saw it and I immediately said "HOLY SHIT". sadly my mom and dad were right beside me.

  • Hey... thanks a lot... a was searching stuff like that for a long time... i'm from Brazil.. still learning ... i ask my drum teacher for more thing like that but i have a hard work to do first with salsa and latin stuff..

  • thats not hard at all i do stuff wayyy harder then that

  • Hi can you make a video just of grooves? You always do a fill then about 2 seconds of the groove.. and i want to hear the rest because they are great!

  • Hey! No problem. I am working on getting a camera. In the mean time, you ever listen to gospel or pop-country. Those guys are putting a whooping on the drums as far as grooves go...yea, I said it...pop-country...they are sick.Shannon Forrest, Chris Mchugh, Jon Mctigue, Ben Sesera, Jim Riley. Nasty. Rascal Flatts, Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban.

  • Nice. I looked up those names on youtube and found a little bit but not much. Do you know of any good youtube videos?

I really love the groove where you do groups of triplets on the hi-hat. Im not good enough yet though.. need to practice more.

  • Very Good

    Muito Bom !

    Parabéns!!!!!

    Sucesso !!!

  • nice!!! it sounds great man...try playing it with a click for it to come easier for you. when i can't do a certain groove or fill, the metronome always comes in handy!

  • I agree- That is great advice. At the time I recorded this, I hadn't ever practiced with a metronome, but in the past few months that is all I have been workingon, and now I can honestly say, it might be the first thing I would recommend to a drummer to work on. Thanks

  • very nice variation. i've been looking all night for a gospel chop and this one's gonna be the first i'll be working on. thanks for posting. keep drumming :)!!!

  • paonek1 he sed he only had anb hour 2 film the stuff i dont fink he is gona take a mirror with him, i know what your sain but...

n anyway ur quite fast at doin that did it take u long to learn how to do it that fast??

  • Hey- Thanks for the kind words. The pattern does take some time, but like I have said before, it depends on your practice habits. If you buckle down and practice it slow and gradually speed it up, and do that every day, it shouldn't take that long...it just takes focused practice.

  • Also, once you get the whole alternating hand/foot thing, future exercises like this become much more fluid, and easier to learn.

  • Wow, dude. Nice...

Do you have another hi-hat on your right, off-screen? I kinda heard something.

  • Hey man...this stuff is real helpfull thanks. Theres some cool stuff in there

  • dude your ideas are great...but you should really practice talking in a mirror before you video tape it.

  • Yo dude- I know= these vids suck because I sound like an idiot. I had the camera for one hour and had to film all of my vids in that time period, so I guess it was nerves...not to mention, knowing the drum community will be judging me. Anyway, I have some new stuff coming that will blow this stuff out of the water.

  • holy shit your good

  • except in this case of this paradiddle ur using ur feet and a hand insted of 2 hands

  • hey bud, just 4 a future reference, the fill is call a paradiddle, like RLRR or RLRLRR or start the phrase with ur left stick, and then it can be looped over and over like RLRRLRLL. so call it a paradiddle

  • he's going RFRFF LFLFF which is far off from a paradiddle. paradiddles are all in four stroke bud. even a double paradiddle can't be a 5 stroke. it's 6. this is just a variation of a 5 stroke roll

  • u spelled coltrane rong

  • I have had this login name since I was about 13. It has nothing to do with Coltrane. By the way, you spelled You and Wrong, wrong.

  • tyler your a dumbass

  • hey i like the new vid...you're getting better at drumming and explaining lessons better also...keep it up

  • What kind of drumhead is that!! I know it's a remo but what line??

  • wat kind of snare is that? sounds tight!

  • really cool dude, tama swingstar?

  • im going to try this out sounds awesome thanks

  • thanks man. i been hittin these at church.

  • Cool- Thanks for the positive feedback. I'll have some new vids soon. I've been getting my own act together, so the next batch of vids should be real clean. Thanks again.

  • i love the sound of your snare drum!

  • great lick man

  • at 3:47 the groove with the quin on the snare was nasty in a good way!! keep up the good work bro!

  • What Hes doin is a quintuplet....Yea dat shit is odd but itz REALLY great 2 add 2 ur arsenal... theirs three ways 2 play a quintuplet, just like there r 3 different triplets formats!!!

  • nice tone of your tom man and a good lick!

  • i use this lick all of the time

  • Cool lick, I shall attempt it... :p

BTW I believe the technical theoretical term for this lick is a "quintuplet"

  • Yeah this is sounds great in a solo as well.

  • good stuff bro hope you like mine

  • how long have u been playing?

  • Bluh. Hmm. I guess around 11 years. I started with a tub and a metal bookshelf, so if you include that, 12 years.

  • geeze louise. that's all.

  • christ!! im liking your snare drum it sounds fricken awsome!?..you can pay ££££££s for a sound like that, shows if your lucky there is a freak snare drum out of thousands of budget snares out there...you got lucky with that mate, hang on to it.(stuart copeland had a freak budget snare)

  • Well, I wish it were mine. It was actually borrowed from a teacher of mine. I think it was some old Ludwig, all chrome, but I can find out.

  • you dont know how much u have helped me. I really do appreciate breakin it down. thanx. sweet lick

  • finally someone breaking what I think is the most grooviest fills in drumming. I figured out before that it was just adding the foot, but never could figure it out except the cheesy..2 hands 2 feet. thanks alot, and I know I might start a flame war, but even the better props cause your white!!!!finally some white guys playing gospel!!!

  • nice job, good fill btw, nice chops too

  • good job man

  • Yeah Colby!! lol ...

  • Hey Ray-

Anyone reading this, check out my friends new website. He is nasty on the keys and the drums and if you have any questions regarding industry tips, recording, etc, he can help you. Just follow his link.

  • oh yeah man thats what i am talking about,i never even thought playing fills like that while doing gospel.

  • Hi Coltrain, that is really good stuff. I would find it quite helpful if you put up a video like this focusing on those grooves you use between the licks. They look complex but sound great.

    Thanks, keep it up.

  • i see u showing off the Vic Firth stick in the vid...haha! tryin for that endorsement...lol j/k

gr8 vid .. i'm gonna try to apply that to my grooves.

  • Haha. Well, maybe the buisiness side of my brain was scheming without me knowing. But, you are dead on with that thinking. If I were working for one of the drum companies, I would be all over youtube looking for players. Some of these guys are talked about more than the big timers these days. Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback.

  • oh yeah boy

  • nake some more videos bro

  • I will have access to a camera at the end of the month. I am going to do some videos on afro-cuban grooves, bass technique, and whatever else I can think of.

  • Nice playing man!

  • Ambasador hazy is a SNARE SIDE head...not a batter. try a emperor x coated, my personal favorite.

  • white dude teachin gospel??? haha i like it man, dude is good!!!!!

  • gotcha! your technique is good

  • dude!!! taped tissue on a pinstripe? clear snare head? these are no nos you should understand before you teach technique!!

  • How long have you been playing the drums? You should make a video on how to tune a bass drum

  • Hey- I have been playing about 10 years. I just moved from Philly to Nashville, so I will need some time to get situated, but I will get a lesson up on bass technique. As far as tuning goes, just try thick heads. I don't really have any technique for tuning. I consider myself pretty bad at it. Thicker heads do help get that gospel sound.

  • create a lesson about heel toe technique. Really intresting, talk something about bass pedal tuning, it must be light or hard tuned. and what about second note of double weaker? How to make it sound the same as 1st, and not to change bass pitch (bass head tuning too...)?

  • he said earlier he's using heel up technique for doubles... I guess that means he's not using heel toe... it doesn't sound like heel toe either

  • Its about your foot speed, if you get your foot speed right you think in 30 second notes against your songs tempo, so if your playing a basic bounce groove then it doubles up so it will be played as a in-groove fill not a replacement for a full bar of 4, but keep it up.

  • lol
