this is why i love youtube.i had read about this band but never heard or found any records by them ,i often discover lost gems by obscure groups who never got decent airplay and some that just went under the radar- but at least these guys went on to bigger things as abc.5stars
I always loved this one. It's still baffling how everything from Sheffield went from being so completely dark to being so light within about 3 years - human league 1979 vs. human league 1981 and vice versa vs. ABC. it's nuts. i almost wish the economy never improved in sheffield so that music could be good again!
That phrase between '...you wore last night...' and '... is the lover in the modern beat'... - I think you missed it; '...New love and new adventure seek...' or something?
And Martin Fry was good friends with Adi Newton who was part of the band Clock DVA, and had previously been in The Future who later went on to form The Human League. (see 'Sheffield avant-garde electronic music acts' for more history!)
I couldn't make out the lyrics for my cover version; fortunately Steve Singleton provided them: New girls, neutrons This year's icons Tower blocks and hypodermics Hard drugs and melting plastic I see your face in fluorescent light I see the clothes that you wore last night Do you love life in the ejector seat Is there glamour in the modern beat You sit, time passes slowly Then we kiss, the plot is B-movie On your wrist you wore a digital watch You'd check the time but it seems to have stopped
I've not heard this for, it must be 30 years........ 30 years where the hell did that go. Good good days.

I have this :) (The "Music 4" EP) Probably the only Yank that does (have the "Stilyagi" 7" as well).
Awesome stuff - back in the day whenever ABC would come up, I would snarl "They were much better before ... when they were Vice Versa!"

Does anyone know the lyrics? A brilliant stop-start technique of songwriting :)

New girls neutrons,
Mini skirts icons
Tower blocks hyperdermics
On drugs melting plastic
I see your face in fluorescent light
I see the clothes you wore last night
Is the lover in the modern beat Music, time passes slowly
Then we kiss the bodys keep moving
On your wrist you wore a digital watch
It kept the time but it seems to have stopped..

I always thought "On drugs" was actually "Modern Drugs", a reference to the Sheffield magazine Paul Bower ran.
I also thought "It kept the time" was "To/You check the time".
Who cares though, it's a cracking song. I'm currently listening to my restored version of 8 Aspects.

One tiny correction - 'Modern Drugs' was run by Martin Fry. Paul Bower (with Adi Newton) edited 'Gunrubber'. Cheers.
