Whoever disliked this song is the shame of our existence here as human beings, those who cannot recognize pure, sincere beauty do not deserve to walk amongst us. But, in hindsight, music like this may not be as cherished and appreciated if everybody held it dear, it's just for us, the ones who know better. Because we are loyal to Elliott, as he is worth every moment we allow his serenades to bring us peace.
Life is sometimes bleak, but we all must remember miracles such as Elliott, forever.
Have you guys should check out Rob Bravery, just discovered his music, a real appreciation for the style of songwriting that Elliott coined in a way, although no one will replace him its a good progression forward. XO
beautiful, it's just so bewildering to me how so many songs these days seem so contrived but elliott's music is just packed with emotion and meaning and yet seems so effortless.
the difference between Elliott's lyrics and the others, is that when he sings "I wish I've never seen your face..."he really mean it, you can really feel the sadness in his words, thats why he was one of the greatest songwriters ever.
How does he always know what to say to match whats in my soul, he is a terrific man for all the poignant memories he makes me feel. Elliott Smith is like a bandaid for my heart.
To me, this song is about him and his biological father's relationship. A father and son being silent is cliche, because they didn't have a close relationship. Since his mom divorced his father, Elliott problably just wished he hadn't seen him since they weren't together anyway.
@OnlySleeping89 yeah i agree his song roman candle is about his father too i think he got abused as a kid its crazy he wrote roman candle when he was 17 great songwriter
Elliott says so little in this song yet he means so much, It's unbelievable the effect this song always takes on me. I'll always wonder why he named it Waltz...
this is one of the most perfect songs i've ever heard, the lyrics, the progression, the rhythm, it all makes sense. if there's one thing we can be sure about in this world is that elliott was a genius.
@DeathBySitar When I found out he had committed suicide the only thing I could think was : "Damn, it all makes so much sense now." The best ones always die somehow or split up. aha.
Yeah it's weird. His girl said claimed they had a fight so she locked herself in the bathroom. Then she heard him scream, and found him with a knife in his chest. So she pulled it out and that's why her fingerprints were on it.... It's a pretty lame story. And then later she filed a lawsuit against the smiths to get a lot of elliot's money. It would be no surprise if she killed him.
@Robinguitarded Yeah, its a lame storyy. :/! and there were like gashes on his hands from where he would prevent from his attacker. If she killed him i hope she goes to hell, if not, she deserves heaven, because she has had a hard time from the press, and deserves to be with elliott if she is innocent. thats the only thing i can say about her. xx
This song sounds as if Elliott wants to forget about someone. Waltz #2 has similar third person attributes. That would suck to be them, listening. haha. ELLIOTT IS GOD!
to hell with good will hunting..i wish he would have worked on eternal sunshine of the spotless mind with jon brion...and this song should have ended the movie..my god..that would have been amazing
A lot of his songs suggest to me that this was a man who did not suffer from cognitive dissonance. We usually move on by not moving on, and in actuality not confronting or internalizing our feelings. The alternative though is to always be fully cognizant of what you've experienced and what you've lost, knowing that it WAS real and DID matter, but that it's also now gone, rather than lying to yourself in order to avoid the hurt that knowledge brings. Just an opinion.
A very good point. I've thought long and hard about this, and the only problem I have is that his story didn't have a happy ending. Whatever it was that made him able to experience the world to such a powerful degree and write the songs he did, also killed him.
It would certainly see that way, which makes it even more poignant. It's a disturbing proposition, having three possible outcomes: 1) Ignore reality through cognitive dissonance in order to survive and maintain some peace of mind, 2) Always be imminently and painfully aware of reality in its totality (which, to be fair, does include good things, too) POTENTIALLY to the point that it makes you unbearably miserable, or 3) #2 but find a way to live with it somehow (i.e. suffering.) :(
"What was I supposed to say?" and "I wish I'd never seen your face."
So full of emotion, so beautiful. I think it's a great song, and I totally agree with what's said in the previous comment. We lost a great man, a great artist...
i truly believe this is his best song ever. it's so sad, and so well composed. the beauty of it all just reminds us of what a great man we lost. Rest In Peace Elliott, may true happiness be with you.
