  • I used to listen to this when I was little. <3

  • @wavvesy Wow, you listened to Elliott Smith when you were little? That's cool!

  • right now im into him more than ever and sunny day real estate and Hayden (dresser) and of course the pixies

  • <3

  • Beautiful ;}

  • Elliott Smith invented crying.

  • i cant listen to elliott without crying

  • The beginning of this song could cure cancer

  • some nights this song seems so understanding i could listen to it a million times in a row

  • I don't think I could ever relate to this song more than I do now. this hurts so fucking bad. I love you so much, Elliott. I'm hanging on for you.

  • So fucking amazing :')

  • bought this album the day he died, found out as soon as i got home while listening to it for the first time. haunting

  • Whoever disliked this song is the shame of our existence here as human beings, those who cannot recognize pure, sincere beauty do not deserve to walk amongst us. But, in hindsight, music like this may not be as cherished and appreciated if everybody held it dear, it's just for us, the ones who know better. Because we are loyal to Elliott, as he is worth every moment we allow his serenades to bring us peace.

Life is sometimes bleak, but we all must remember miracles such as Elliott, forever.

  • Have you guys should check out Rob Bravery, just discovered his music, a real appreciation for the style of songwriting that Elliott coined in a way, although no one will replace him its a good progression forward. XO

  • I'm transcribing this song as my musicianship project for my degree, and setting harmonies to it. Pretty fucking hard when you can't stop crying.

  • beautiful, it's just so bewildering to me how so many songs these days seem so contrived but elliott's music is just packed with emotion and meaning and yet seems so effortless.

  • It's like being trapped inside a music box and not caring if anyone lets you out.

  • it's the like the rest of the world stops.

  • probably the saddest Elliott Smith song but amazing none the less, wish you were here

  • With this song crying is optional.

  • one of the most heart moving songs from him. it nearly brings me to tears everytime i hear it.

  • I couold totally choreograph a lovely but melancholy ballet dance to this.

  • I've never really heard anything quite like this. To the whole album Love1? :)

  • now to by all his albums :D

  • I met you just now, what a shame : (

    ....your songs are so beautiful!

  • i had sex to this album. and let me just say, it was fucking amazing.

  • @lovek1ll I had sex with this album...and it was even better. :)

  • @lovek1ll amazing!

  • Sweeping

  • I feel like, instead of crying I just listen to Elliott's music.

  • This song is comprised of Elliott's finest ideas. I can't even comprehend how he came up with those progressions... How??? HOWW???

  • one of my favorites by him

    absolutely beautiful.

  • truth is we really need talent like this in todays pathetic music scene.

all we get is lady "gag a" ... how sick is that ?

can you imagine what music he would have made today ?

  • wow

  • You really can see/feel the day darkening down during the opening 32 seconds. Boy, he clever. Gee, he was clever. Shit, he was clever.

  • @theunsheep And yet, paradoxically, the wordless vocal from 0:12 to 0:20 is very sunrise-y. The elements are magic.

  • this song is so much more powerful when the bass is turned up. (bass drum) you can't really hear it here... i miss elliott.

  • this song is cool

  • this is cool

    .

  • this is cool

  • this is tiet

  • if my life had a soundtrack, this would be the main theme!

  • the difference between Elliott's lyrics and the others, is that when he sings "I wish I've never seen your face..."he really mean it, you can really feel the sadness in his words, thats why he was one of the greatest songwriters ever.

  • just love this song,LETS TAKE DOWN COMERCIAL MUSIC

  • How does he always know what to say to match whats in my soul, he is a terrific man for all the poignant memories he makes me feel. Elliott Smith is like a bandaid for my heart.

  • rip

  • i want these lyrics tatted across my back.

  • i wish i had never seen YOUR FUCKING FACE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE.

  • what album is this from? it sounds so different from the XO album version.

  • @pojo1017 turns out i had the demo version all along...

  • Elliott wrote this song while listening to Yellow Brick Road for 18 hours straight on shrooms.. awesome.

  • i love this why did they not use this in donnie darko

  • @MrMcguinny Well they pretty much copied it for the soundtrack. (:

  • @blueamerican54 i know its crazy it just sounds like it

  • What a beautiful piece of music. Brings a tear of joy and pain to your eye at the same time.

  • To me, this song is about him and his biological father's relationship. A father and son being silent is cliche, because they didn't have a close relationship. Since his mom divorced his father, Elliott problably just wished he hadn't seen him since they weren't together anyway.

  • @OnlySleeping89 yeah i agree his song roman candle is about his father too i think he got abused as a kid its crazy he wrote roman candle when he was 17 great songwriter

  • come forth two idiots who didn't like this song. We must check you for a heart...

  • Comment removed

  • Elliott says so little in this song yet he means so much, It's unbelievable the effect this song always takes on me. I'll always wonder why he named it Waltz...

  • @KeithMoonSkydog This song is written in 3/4 time signature like a Waltz. I think this one definitly relates to his father.

  • this song always makes me cry and want to take more zoloft.

  • @meryeli1 smoke some fuckin weed what the fuck is wrong with you?

  • This is the best song ever by him. Hands down.

  • Imo his best song among others but idk this one realy does it for me.

  • Truly the elevation of the soul that Poe was referring to.

  • Reminds me of a modern day Mozart or Beethoven.

  • 29,686 Views and only 1 moron!

  • @rileymacjuice count me too,

  • @manuel8200 Sorry, 2 morons.

  • This makes me want to give up and live and get better at the same time. Big sigh. Eyes are tired. Off to bed.

  • this is one of the most perfect songs i've ever heard, the lyrics, the progression, the rhythm, it all makes sense. if there's one thing we can be sure about in this world is that elliott was a genius.

  • if he killed himself, it would make perfect sense.

  • @DeathBySitar When I found out he had committed suicide the only thing I could think was : "Damn, it all makes so much sense now." The best ones always die somehow or split up. aha.

  • this is perfection. elliott's a giant.

  • Lord I love this song...

  • i've listened to this song over and over all weekend. i'm in love. ♥

  • The best song off an album that was very inspired by After The Goldrush (1970) by Neil Young. How I miss Elliott Smith!

  • I Don't Think He Killed Himself,

    but what do i know?

it doesnt matter how he died, it matters that such an amazing person is dead when he shouldnt be. x

  • @Graciefrance

Yeah it's weird. His girl said claimed they had a fight so she locked herself in the bathroom. Then she heard him scream, and found him with a knife in his chest. So she pulled it out and that's why her fingerprints were on it.... It's a pretty lame story. And then later she filed a lawsuit against the smiths to get a lot of elliot's money. It would be no surprise if she killed him.

  • @Robinguitarded Yeah, its a lame storyy. :/! and there were like gashes on his hands from where he would prevent from his attacker. If she killed him i hope she goes to hell, if not, she deserves heaven, because she has had a hard time from the press, and deserves to be with elliott if she is innocent. thats the only thing i can say about her. xx

  • this song is amazzing it ..........gets me in a zone i dont want to leave i love elliott smith why do the brilient die young

  • I absolutely CANNOT stop listening to this song - it is perfection. Waltz #1 may be one of my favorite Elliott Smith songs ever.

  • @dharmaluvsu

i prefer waltz #2.i'm not saying this one is bad but i can't stop listening to waltz #2.oh why did he have to kill himself? :(

  • I know, I miss him too :(

But yeah, I completely overlooked this song the first time I heard XO - the immenseness of its beauty dawned on me only recently!

  • Same here.Waltz #2 and happiness are probably my favourite songs by him

  • i mostly listen to techno but other than that i love songs like this. Songs just dont make you feel like this anymore

  • This song sounds as if Elliott wants to forget about someone. Waltz #2 has similar third person attributes. That would suck to be them, listening. haha. ELLIOTT IS GOD!

  • to hell with good will hunting..i wish he would have worked on eternal sunshine of the spotless mind with jon brion...and this song should have ended the movie..my god..that would have been amazing

  • This is the kind of song that will forever haunt your memory.

  • One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

  • @visioncommission

    Me too.

  • AMAZING. Such a tragedy that he died. He made the most incrediuble, beautiful music. Especially this song...

  • agreed

  • sad

  • _ _ _

  • What a great song, I was wondering if he ever thought of writting Waltz # 3, guess we will never know, R.I.P.

  • A lot of his songs suggest to me that this was a man who did not suffer from cognitive dissonance. We usually move on by not moving on, and in actuality not confronting or internalizing our feelings. The alternative though is to always be fully cognizant of what you've experienced and what you've lost, knowing that it WAS real and DID matter, but that it's also now gone, rather than lying to yourself in order to avoid the hurt that knowledge brings. Just an opinion.

  • A very good point. I've thought long and hard about this, and the only problem I have is that his story didn't have a happy ending. Whatever it was that made him able to experience the world to such a powerful degree and write the songs he did, also killed him.

  • It would certainly see that way, which makes it even more poignant. It's a disturbing proposition, having three possible outcomes: 1) Ignore reality through cognitive dissonance in order to survive and maintain some peace of mind, 2) Always be imminently and painfully aware of reality in its totality (which, to be fair, does include good things, too) POTENTIALLY to the point that it makes you unbearably miserable, or 3) #2 but find a way to live with it somehow (i.e. suffering.) :(

  • this is what what sucks. I think this is a very acccurate opinion!.

  • What a fucking beautiful arrangement!

I wish I'd never seen your face.

  • now i never leave my zone, we're both alone, i'm going home....i wish i'd never seen your face.........

    amen.

  • what a bittersweet sound does this song have.

  • It's like a dream... so pretty and so haunting.

  • I am so in love with the two last lines.

"What was I supposed to say?" and "I wish I'd never seen your face."

So full of emotion, so beautiful. I think it's a great song, and I totally agree with what's said in the previous comment. We lost a great man, a great artist...

  • At least he left us with something to believe in. All is not lost. :) It is perfect.

  • i truly believe this is his best song ever. it's so sad, and so well composed. the beauty of it all just reminds us of what a great man we lost. Rest In Peace Elliott, may true happiness be with you.

  • we had to do a dance to this song at school, and it gets suuuuper creepy after you have listened to it 20 times in a row....

  • what an insult..

    you should be so lucky.

  • your lucky you could listen to him at school elliott smith is amazing i would want to listen to him every second of every hour of every day <3

  • Let her make the move on you, just be yourself playa

  • Thanks man i asked her out last saturday and she said yes!

  • I highly approve of this. Congratulations on the skank. And the girl too.

  • Maybe that's why she doesn't wanna be with you?

  • It does make you very sad. Try listing too this and look at sad pictures. It makes you soo sad. If you guys like Elliot try out Kevin Devine. Hes really good. Just not as good as Elliot. But check him out. I recamend The Song, Another Bag of bones ( Time too Burn) or Brothers Blood.
