I was driving in Ireland after having arrived from France. I turned on the car radio and heard "Maggie". They didn't announce the song, but I was determined to find it. I stopped the car in Kilarney and went to a music shop in hopes of describing it well enough that they'd know it. Nope, "Never heard of it., but if you like Irish folk music, try the Fureys." I bought the CD but had to wait til I got home to play it. To my joy, "Maggie" was on the CD!
I don't think kids today can appreciate their parents like we did, they are special times. I must admit I do shed a few tears when listening to these beautiful songs, they bring back magical memories of yesteryear.
It has to be said: The Irish nation for hundreds of years have given so much pleasure of music and song to the world. I Just love the stuff that comes over the Irish sea!
I must have some Irish somewhere in my makeup, because I only enjoy Irish or Scottish music......Thats saying something for a South Georgia, USA girl (66 yo). Could someone give the words to the third verse that starts, The Golden....Thanks so much. Love the Fureys.
Fair play Gemr0d tellin the truth.Bigger up to Macangusagain .Fair play young man every bastard nation in the world robs, steals, twists n perverts the culture of others. I never heard the Canadian version but intend to Merci bien.
Macangusagain is quite right, and BTW I'm an Irishman, this song was written by a Canadian schoolteacher in the 1860s and the original lyrics were quite different to this. The great Irish playwright Sean O'Casey took the melody and used it in his play "the Plough and the Stars" but it was called Nora, after one of the plays main characters not Maggie. Both sets of lyrics are beautiful but the original ones are Canadian. For a good version of the original words check out Foster and Allen.
You've clearly missed a lot, as the first settlers in Canada came from many places, across the Arctic land bridge, across the Pacific Ocean from various lands, then 12,000 or so years later came the Vikings to L'anse aux Meadows, then the Basques to Port aux Basques, Spanish Portuguese, then the French, and then the Scots, English and Irish. A real blend of the world's mutts, just like England ,Ireland , and the land of my birth , Scotland , were and are, so what is your point ?? Albainn gu Brath
Please see the remarks of Jannymouse on the "maggie ** lyrics" version of the song for it's history, it is magnificent and 100% Canadian !!! The Fureys certainly do a wonderful job of the tune, but the song is of our land, our heart and our soul, written by Canadians, both tune and verse,by Johnson and Butterfield. with respect,Tom
@josparkes I don't think you could manufacture a voice like that it's pure magic, thank god we can still listen to real talent instead of todays junk.
@33344999 Well said, this song is so beautiful, it is like listening to a magical experience, one that transports one to paradise, the paradise of music of course, (not to be confused with the paradise and Heaven of Jesus Himself )
Simplicity, serenity and beautiful lyrics....A wonderful song sung in a superb manner. A lovely little master piece.

Davvy Arthur is the only man in the world who can say "de" in place of "the" and not sound dumb in doing so. On the contrary, it's charming!
