As a former US army Drill Sergeant, Infantryman, and Vietnam era veteran, this film sums up what many of us had to go thru upon returning from Vietnam or serving during that time. Very realistic and actually had one of my Vietnam friends suffer from the mental vigors of war, only to be shot by an off duty policeman for public drunkeness.
Stallone was tremendous in this movie, along with Dennehy, and Crenna. Thanks for helping people realize the cost our soldiers pay to keep our freedom.
@MrRokdapus its kinda normal, its a mental breakdown, he's just mumbling things about wars. Even I, which english isnt my primary language, can understand...
Rambo: First Blood remains as one of the most effective anti-war films ever made. Despite eventually being run into the ground as a tasteless and typical action franchise, the original made clear messages about veterans affairs, and is one of Stallones best performances as an ACTOR, not an action star. Born on the 4th of July is the only anti war movie that tops this, if you ask me.
@wgregorios Full Metal Jacket was definitely a film that made an impact and has its place, but personally I prefer Rambo and Born on the 4th of July - 4th of July was a film that was horrifying to me during high school when I first saw it. It was painful to watch, worse than any horror film I've seen. Full Metal Jacket is definitely great, no doubt about it. Maybe I'd rank it third, Im not sure.
I can't agree more. Sylvester Stallone deserves an Oscar for his truly, visceral performance in "Rambo - First Blood" (1982). That was his BEST acting. Better than Rocky. Even better than "Cop Land" or "Escape to Victory" when he was directed by John Huston. In the 70's and early 80's the man was in his best moment. Until then, Sly could be seen like a Al Pacino with muscles. An actor with charisma and REAL talent. That was his LAST Great Performance as an DRAMATIC Actor. Aplauses.
That sounds horrible, what his story was. A kid said "shine" then his friend opened the shoe shine box and it was a bomb and his body parts and guts fell all over rambo. That is really horrific
There are times when you feel like a man against the world, when luck is never on your side, when it seems like all hope is lost and you're destined for defeat. When these times come it's up to you to man the fuck up and go get those motherfuckers who're making your life miserable. I'm coming to get them!
This was a great movie and sad ending depicting a "breakdown" of a Vietnam Vet suffering from PTSD. The irony of the ending is interesting. Rambo finally breaks down, falling to his feet and remembers the tragic loss of his friend. Richard Crenna (Col. Troutman) does a great job, he looks so uncomfortable, like he didn't know how to respond. He suddenly realizes that Rambo is not a machine, but a human w/emotion. Great acting by both, love this movie.
There will NEVER be another time like the 80's Action Hero Stars.
All these shit model actors nowadays, they're fucking pathetic.
1950's. 1960's. 1970's. 1980's. 1990's. Those where THE DAYS !! THE REAL MEN.
I mean: Charles Bronson. Clint Eastwood. Chuck Norris. Sly. Arnold. Bruce Willis. Van Damme. Steven Seagal. Bruce Lee. Steve McQueen. Humphrey Bogart. De Niro. Pacino. Lee Marvin. John Wayne. They played TRUE characters.
@sergandtash It could also be interpreted as an officer coming to grips and seeing that enlisted men have to deal with the brunt of the consequences of war... in general.
Why does everyone try to turn this into some kind of right-wing propaganda? I think the point of it (Stallone's marginal acting aside) is to focus on what that unnecessary and illegal war did to so many otherwise promising young men.
Fuck Liberal. They are bunch of Maggots and hippies shits. They disrespect our troops by spitting at them, protest against them, called them baby bombcrap, and all negative. I bet you dumbass Liberal protest WW2 how fucking stupid I guess you were suckling Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo's balls.
Stallone also thinks this is his best scene in film. Search YT for the original ending, this was not the way First Blood was to have ended. Rambo actually dies but the producers thought it was too depressing an ending. It also didn't go over well with test audiences. But it's also a pretty good scene too.
this didnt get stallone a nomination at the oscars for best actor why? this is his second best performances to date next to his performance in Rocky. one of the best movies of all time.
All the people talking about liberals and conservatives can just be quiet. As a liberal with several friends in service I can never truly relate to what Jon Rambo is saying personally but I know of people who have been scared by war just like this. before you go and make an argument either way just know that there are truly people out there who suffer like this
I havent seen this movie in a while but no matter how many times I see this scene, I still am moved to the point where I almost cry. This scene is raw and powerful and contains Stallone's best performance. It shows what Stallone's career could of been (a serious actor) as opposed to it end up becoming be (an action star). Don't get me wrong, I love his action films he made later on but for those who say he can't act, watch this scene and you'll find a real actor working here.
@moviefreak2011: I somewhat agree with you... Stallone could have been a serious actor, never a De Niro, but a respectable actor instead of the action movie star he actually became. In my opinion his best acting was that of Rocky I when he tells Adrian that nobody had gone the distance with Creed and if he did he would know for the first time he is not only another bum from the neighborhood... BRILLIANT ACTING!!!
The problem is not the liberals is war itself, war is no good for anyone just look at this scene were he just feels like he doesn't feel like he fits in society.
I don't know whats your point? The movie doesn't criticises liberals neither this scene, but what does criticise is war
It always annoys me when people rag on Stallones acting talent, they need to watch First Blood, Copland, Rocky and Rocky Balboa, he's a great actor. It also annoys me how people seem to think his mumbling is bad acting, idiots.
Fucking Liberal! They screw our troops in Vietnam, War in Iraq, and War in Afghanistan. They are bunch of fucking dumbass, brainwashed, and dumb sheep.

@jrewdown21 hell, it's sad that so many people were so horrible to the soldiers returning home. Vietnam was a horrible war. But that is no reason for disrispect
I'm a gulf war veteran. This is the first time I've watched this scene and now I'm planning to rent the movie. stupid kids commenting in here about 10 people cant do this and 10 people cant do that.. this scene is soo much more you stupid fucks.. so much more.. and all that say about the soldiers that help for your freedom, in Iraq etc.. its all politics it has nothing to do with freedom in the US, absolutely nothing. politics and financial thats all.. and in the scene rambo sais it wasnt my war.. meaning it is not the soldiers war.. its the politicians that sent them trhere..
Stallone is a bad actor but he's very charismatic, popular and well-liked by his fans because he made a kind of cinema that made many people happy, just like myself, and because he's a nice guy.
..And i got blood and everything and I'm trying to hold together, the guy's fucking insides keep coming out! Ohhh god....AND NOBODY WOULD HELP! I MEAN NOBODY WOULD HELP! HE'S SAYING "I WANNA GO HOME! I WANNA GO HOME!" AND HE KEEPS CALLING MY NAME! "I WANNA GO HOME JOHNNY! I WANNA DRIVE MY CHEVY!" And I said "WHY? I can't find your fucking legs!"
Easily one of Stallone's greatest performances. IMO this made First Blood. The last speech turns Rambo from a sort of of mildly expounded vagabond into a person who, in the end, just wants to live a peaceful life but cannot understand how to anymore. Stellar performance, even nearly 30 years later.
This was a deep scene remember watching in complete silence holding my breath up to the point where he said "With what I can't find your fucking legs" then i just cracked up but still r8d scene what makes the movie so memorable after all the rampage he just lets loose verbally.
@leafyutube he's talking about a vietnamese kid offering to shine his buddy's boots, then when he opens the shoeshine box, it blew up, and he had pieces of his buddy all over him. his buddy kept telling him "I want to go home" as he was dying.
This is one of the most saddest & touching scenes in any movie to me, because many of our vets come back home and unfortunately, the war comes home with them. I can never imagine the hells our men & women have to endure after serving our country, but I thank each and everyone of them for their sacrifice. Thanks to Rambo for portraying the pain our vets have to endure, and may God keep our men & women serving this country.
I'd let Rambo park my car

It's hard to take this kind of rant seriously when it sounds like his mouth is full of cotton.

I can't find your fucking legs!"
...I..I can't find your legs...

Stallone gets so much crap for a lot of his . . . er, questionable roles. But this monologue is one of the best performances in film history.

When he says "Nothing is over! Nothing!" He kind of sounds like Stewie from family guy.

What the fuck is Sly talking about?
leafyutube 7 months ago
