  • okay how did i get here from sweeney todd

  • Totally. What a trooper and class act. Glad it's posted for us to appreciate.

  • What a trooper.

  • watch close and you see as she takes off on her broom that she is not stradling it..also she jumps down rather than out..its a quick shot but noticeable..

  • @bodleladle Since witches shun undergarments, they get stuck to the broom handle if they don't ride side-saddle.

  • Margaret had the perfect bone structure and nose for a Witch! even her voice was

a additional accent sounding nasal and haggish. The Wizard of Oz certainly owes

most of its success to this magnificent character actress.

  • My mother in law should have auditioned :P

  • Ms. Hamilton had a great sense of humor about the casting.

  • @ladyvee7110 people don't realize as actors do that once your cast in that part that you are type cast forever , I met her years ago in Stamford , Connecticut where they filmed the maxwell house coffee commercials , such a sweet woman , she accepted herself even after being badly burned from the fire I saw a few scars , she had a strong faith in God ,

  • @jhunted7667 Yes, I've heard in interviews with various people in the acting community that she was a very sweet lady who loved children. It just goes to show that you cannot judge people by the roles they play.

  • Trivia I never knew... thank you...

  • Hilarious at the end. Wonder if they'll ever do a remake.

  • @daven58100 I doubt it, Return to OZ was a dismal failure.

  • soundtrack will have to enclosed dolly parton somewhere over the rainbow

  • Cher as the Wicked Witch

  • i can do it better rember in baums time you where poor if you had no gold or sliver

so i will give her back the sliver slippers and make the wicked witch better no green skin but better and cgi lion and tin man an scarecrow I cast Patrick Stwart as The Wizard Nathan Lane as the Lion Tommy Lee Jones as the Tinman and Martin Short as the Scarecrow and Paula Deen as the witch of the north Julie Newman as Glenda and as Dorothy Gayle Natalie Portman

  • @Gnostic2030 you have GOT to be kidding.....

  • Maggie originally signed , if I recall, a 4 week deal to play the witch, but she ended up working 4 months on the film and made just over $18,000. A fortune in the 1930's!

  • My favorite movie, and my favorite part in the movie. I love Margaret Hamilton. No one could have done it better. She scared me to death when I watched this movie as a kid.

  • LOL. Hilarious! History in the making!

  • Little did she know but Margaret Hamilton created an iconic character that can NEVER be duplicated! She set the standard for all Hollywood productions with an "evil character" in it...

  • I am quite young, I look back at these time's and though I'm sure them were many problem's religious dogma homophobia racism war ect....sorta same as today, At least aesthetically there was a certain vibrato in people's appearance, A grace perhaps that just doesn't exist anymore, I would like to time travel to these time's!

  • the witch?! ^_^

  • Scary when your young lol

  • she scares me.

  • Too bad they never had the technology that is used in thre Terminator 2 movie to use the visual effects on the Wicked Witch when she is defeated.

  • OMG. I can't believe I've stumbled upon this! I was looking at videos about the musical (soon to be movie) "Wicked", which I had never heard of and instantly became fascinated with, when I spotted THIS video. This is amazing footage. What a GEM.

  • Bless her heart and soul! She did AMAZING things with that role of a lifetime!

  • Happy Birthday Maggie (Margaret Hamilton)!

  • Who among us recalls the funniest line this lady ever delivered, "I'll tell ya where he was, ... he was steppng on my face!" Re: "My Little Chickadee"; WC Fields lowering himself out a window just as Margaret's snoopy character emerged from the window below and looked up to see what the commotion was...

  • Oh God. One of the scariest film characters I have ever seen. The other was the Child Catcher from Chitty. Scarred for life.

  • @steve998 i know, the wicked witch scared me so bad. im 20 now and i cant even watch margaret in her normal state without getting creeped out.

  • @steve998 Holy cow, I feel the exact same. I don't know why, but the child catcher in Chitty sent a chill down my spine as a child. I believe that there was a scene where he looked in a window and I just about crapped myself. I look back on it now and it does not seem very scary.

  • cool

  • I remember this nightmare I had as a kid where a witch was chasing me down popping bolts off locks and opening doors the dream in my mind's eye was symbolic but Dam I swear this is the exact same witch I seen lol

  • As a kid this wicked witch was genuinely scary, even now I am a bit scared of her. Fantastic casting and performance.

  • Her and her damned flying monkeys. I had nightmares for weeks.

  • @nerblebun they still may come and carry you away , they are called Fema , they still wear black

  • ELPHABA! :)

  • She was perfect! Absolutely mastered the role & then some. Still powerful after over 70 years. Remember her on tv as Cora the storekeeper in the coffee ads.

  • I remember seeing her on other television shows. We would all yell, "look, look. It is the wicked witch of the west, come look" and everyone would come running to see.

  • I've seen several other movies in which Ms. Hamilton had parts, and she was a damn fine character actress...she was the perfect actress for the role of the Wicked Witch of the West, my pretties....

  • she became better looking as she got older. this lady use to frighten me.

  • Wow she looks real different from d movie. Scared back wen I was 6, n still scared now that I am 20 almost 21. Just looking at her n her voice. Wow grate actor make up n every thing 100% gud job.. rip to all in that movie.

  • Maggie, you were the best!!!

  • Witches are ugly like my ex-wife

  • @PattiKay63 lol

  • woman enters with gun* @ 1:49

Man: we'll gladly pay you for any damage

    woman with gun: alright $3!!

    Man: F***!!.....(smiles)

now you can't deny that guy said that at 1:49 like seriously

  • Gotta' luv Maggie!! In so many ways, she made "The Wizard of Oz" the success that it was.

  • In the upcoming Wizard of Oz 2015, word is Michelle Obama is the front runner for the role of the wicked witch..... She'll have plenty of free time on her hands.

  • Love her!!

  • Oh God, not Angela Lansbury again! I cant seem to get away from the old bint these days she seems to be following me everywhere when I turn on the tv. Angela Lansbury - the woman who looked like an old woman even when she was young!

  • When the clip of Stablemates came on with her I thought of her in the wicked witch outfit lol.

  • 1:56 What an awesome lady! :P I <3 her

  • What a treat, thanks for the upload :)

  • I love Maggie. She's so sweet. It must have been difficult for her to have kids be so terrified by her performance. She loved kids. And animals too despite the 'your little dog too' line, Toto loved her.

  • They should have gone with the original plan and made the witch slinky like the queen in Snow White.

  • @verkaforever obviously not, since the movie was so successul. the witch margaret hamilton played is iconic!

  • @AshyMishyMashy I agree. I like both ideas. They would probably both have been iconic.

  • Good grief! That was one attractive woman.

  • There are two silent movie DVD's of the Wizard of OZ, starring Oliver Hardy in that one. The other was called the Scarecrow of OZ and that one was directed by the writer Frank Braum himself!

Oh and the used by the actor playing the wizard wore a coat owned by Frank Braum it was found in a second hand store!

    Ain't that a hoot???

  • Going with the "attractive" witch would have made it more scary actually...

  • even as an older lady she was so pretty :) its great that she landed such a big role after all her hard work

hehe her reaction to being told she was considered for the witch reminds me of when john pinette was told he could be in broadway but he had to play a woman xD

  • @hoodge95 - She is indeed.

  • She reminds me so much of my grandma xD

  • This made me laugh (in a good way). I've seen her crop up in a number of films, and always wondered how she felt to play the Wicked Witch. I didn't know she was recruited for the role. She has a great sense of humor, and her performance definitely helped to make Oz one of the best films ever.

  • Hi, Reddit.

  • @hoodge95 Why yes, that's her.

  • Fun fact: Did you know that when they filmed the Wicked Witch's opening scene in Oz, she was burned by the exit inferno? They had to take time off to let her heal!

  • @nerdysinginggirl wooow i never heard that! thats crazy

  • I think the ugly witch is part of what gives the Wizard of Oz it's fairytale-like charm. I think the glamorous witch would have made it feel more modern.

  • And she is forever proof that you don't have to be conventionally beautiful to be a star, or to marry and have children.

  • She was superbly talented

  • This freaks me out still lol I first watched this movie when I was 2!

  • I would've loved to meet her. (Margaret Hamilton, I mean.)

  • @IdLie32 she died in 1985 sadly

  • Honestly, can you imagine anyone else in that role? She was perfect, absolutely perfect. There will never be another witch quite like her. Never.

  • The first time I ever saw The Wizard of Oz she scared me and I would always hide when she first appeared in that orange cloud of smoke. Then after watching it several times she became my favorite character, truly an excellent actress and a really nice lady. She sure was a rare talent!

  • When I was 6, seeing the Wizard of Oz for the first time, Margaret Hamilton frightened me. But as I grew older, I learned to love her. Since she was cast as Cora in Folgers Coffee commercials, I assume millions more loved her too. She was a great actor who continues to gain fans with each showing of this classic film.

  • She was incredible for that role, as a child watching this film I remember she scared the crap out of me and looking back she was absolutely amazing. :)

  • Margaret Hamilton was PERFECT in her role, and she was a very elegant figure as the Wicked With too. I am So glad nobody else got that part. The movie would never have been so good.

  • Without Maggie hamilton, "The Wizard of Oz could not have been the same. Although she only had about 12 mins. of camera time, she made this movie what it was. RIP, Maggie!!

  • I have the entire behind-the-scenes look on my VHS version. I remember how much I loved this part. :P "The witch?" "Yes, what else?"

  • i didnt know the witch was played by women . thanks for the video

  • Sondergard was hot in that first witch outfit!

  • Thanks for that Mrs Fletcher

  • If they casted today could use michelle obama. she is wicked and a witch or is that b---?

  • @holgerspeckter ..what r u smoking,,, Mrs Obama is no witch....grow up... i think u have been listening to Rush Limbaugh a bit 2 much!

  • @martind586 Could you imagine Hillary Rodham Clinton playing the witch, and Rush Limbaugh playing the wizard??

  • @martind586 Who's Mrs. Obama?

  • DA DUNT DA DUNT DA DUDA!

  • This video has been added to your Favorites.

  • You liked this video. We'll use this to improve your recommendations.

  • The witch in the book is only a minor charachter, and she's portrayed at being short and fat. She's more comic relief than villainous.

  • The narrator is the grandmother from Anastasia!!

  • I am glad they did not make the witch look seductive. As many nightmares as that witch gave me as a kid, I think it was worth it. Her scenes would not have had the same effect on me had she looked pretty. She was supposed to be scary and I wouldn't have been scared of her if she was pretty. In Snow White I did think the wicked queen was mean, but I wasn't scared of her until she turned into the ugly old lady.

  • @DisWldFrk90 i think a beautiful seductive wicked witch would have also worked well , it would have been creative and very original. but insted they went for the steriotypical cliched ugly old witch.

  • Wow! Just imagine if it was that other witch- would've changed everything!

    And Wicked!

  • @weightfeather1: Agreed. It was pressure from MGM that caused Judy to become addicted to drugs that eventually did her in.

  • @weightfeather1 - Indeed she was...in fact, Judy Garland said years later that she had a hard time acting scared during her scenes w/the Witch b/c "Maggie" was such a warm person off-camera and a good friend.

  • Geezer Pick of the Day on twitter 07/17/11

  • Miss Hamilton no one could have did it apart from her she was amazing and a fantastic woman

  • derp

  • thats my great aunt!

  • @shinkashank you so lucky! did you meet her?

  • @runtubefantasy no, she died before i was born, but its so cool! :D

  • Oh my god hehe.. Gale Sondergaard was so beautiful no mater hard hard they tried they coudl't make her look ugly LOL.

  • Amazing so many reason why I love this creation )o(

  • a graceful, wonderful lady who played what is easily the movies' most unforgettable villianess

  • @MrDewy67 *BACKHANDS* DONT EVER TURN A CHILDHOOD ICON INTO YOUR SICK PORN EVER AGAIN!

  • @FlashX212 Childhood icon? This movie opened in 1939. Your childhood icons are the Power Rangers.

  • @FlashX212: Hey, it wouldn't be ANY different than the OFFICIAL porn version of "Wonderland", ESPECIALLY given the Dorothy & Alice crossover (Oz-Wonderland Chronicles).

  • i think im getting obsessed with watching really OLD 1930s-1950s movies and just cant stop thinking how life with their level of technology was. lol

  • A lovely lady.You can just tell :)

  • This is really interesting. This is the kind of thing I wish more people shared on Fireviews so more people could find out about it.

  • She is indeed a charming lady :)

  • what a charming and funny woman

  • Haha yep! I never actually met her as she died before I was born but all of our family members said she was incredible :D

  • Margaret Hamilton is actually a relative of mine :D She was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio

  • @jkmanring REALLY?? wow that is amazing!!! :) I was terrified of her in that film, she played an amazing part you must be so proud of her, rest in peace!! seems like she was a lovely funny gentle-lady in the interview part at the end :) xo

  • @jkmanring You have to feel so proud, she was the best witch i ever see

  • A True Piece Of Americana One Of The Greatest Parts And Acting Jobs Of All Time In One Of The Best Movies Of All Time.

  • she looks like amy from the big bang theory!

  • "... Yes, what else?"

Even if that was the only role left open, and even if he thought she knew that, he wasn't being very diplomatic.

    ;)

  • the viedo is stupid

  • She was AWEsome as the Wicked Witch! We love you Margaret...!

  • she should have gotten a god damn Oscar for her performance

  • But Freddy's so much scarier than all them hags put together. Cant go wrong w/the hypnotic-power of dreams. The NSA's known that for years.

  • WITCHES RULE! I'd fuck em all... even the Cailleach-Caledonian crone of winter.

  • Mrs Potts!

  • I bet she would feel better if she watched Wicked!

  • Anyone else thinks the witch has a ver strange resemblance to lady gaga??

  • Even though she was the Wtich, and scared the hell out of me when I watched the film as a boy, there was always something about Margaret Hamilton that warmed me to her. When I saw the film when I got older, I felt bad when the water hit her!

  • What's with that actress' TERROR of looking ugly? It's just a movie after all, she wasn't supposed to wear that witch makeup 24/7...

  • @ezekielwahwah I don't get it either. The point of being an actor/actress is to convince the audience you are someone else... and if you do it well enough, then you become as famous as the character you portray...

which is, I guess, why few film fans know Gale Sondergaard, but generations of film fans know Margaret Hamilton...

  • I LOVE ELPHABA!!!!!!!! vv

  • FUCK DORTHY.

    IM ON ELPHABA'S SIDE.

  • @selenaandthescenefan I get tears in my eyes when she melts . in show and film. GO ELPHABA

  • they had photos then

  • Wasn't Gale Sondergaard in the Bette Davis movie, "The Letter," as the wife of the man Bette shot?

  • Old Time Hollywood.

  • I saw this movie on TV for the first time when I was ten, and Margaret Hamilton scared the BEEEE-JEEEEZUS out of me!!!! I'll never forget it!

  • @kangadillo I think I was about 5 or 6 and I couldn't have said it better...every time I watched it till past age 10 I think...delightfully scared to death every time she showed up!

  • The Wicked witch is the best role of the movie.

  • Lol awww I love Margaret.

  • she was the best witch, how many of us wanted to dress like her during Halloween, I'll get you my pretty!!!

  • When she's talking at the end that is great!!!

  • She was the best witch of all time. What a great actress!

  • @Bluepersian1994 Agreed. She looks like she'd made a great 'Golden Girl', if the show had started at such an early period. She's got humor and spunk!

  • she was really good at playing the witch she use to scare me when i was little.

  • She did a great job in the role.

  • In his book/audiobook Role Models, John Waters says she was one of his role models and she inspired his love of "oddly striped socks. Tim Burton does (have that love) too." He got a signed pic of her with her W.W.W. monogram

(in the mail). He said he would have loved to spend time with her at her home on an island off the coast of Maine. "No electricity? So what! More quality time to spend with a REAL

    legendary talent!"

  • Can anyone give me a link to where I can download this documentary? I've been looking everywhere for it but every link I find is either dead or fake.

  • yes what else?

  • You like this video. Thanks for the feedback! See more videos you liked.

  • they both died the same year

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • Dang @ 2:18, that was cold...

  • I'm glad she's got a sense of humor and is not all bad and mean.

  • she scares me!

  • Shes creepy !!

  • this movie terrified me when i was little. im so glad they got her cuz she was the big reason its so scary.

  • Margaret Hamilton was great in her rola as the wicket witch!

  • @Darrigrande yes she was ...who would have thought the woman under that green makeup and outfit was such a nice lady .. i admit she scared me as a kid but when i seen who was under all that makeup i was like shes a sweet lady are you sure she plays the witch lol but yea it was her and she played that roll very well.

  • I think the casting of this movie was a sort of miracle. So many close calls in which the wrong person could have been cast.

Additionally, it was released so close to Hitler's invasion of Poland. Several subtle allusions, I'd say. E.g., squadrons of flying monkeys sent off with almost a "heil" gesture.

  • @SSArcher11 actually on that note, when the casting call for munchkins came out floods of dwarves and midgets came to america from germany and poland to escape the nazi regime which would have put them to death for being born different.

  • I LOVE HER VOICE!

  • she was in my nightmare when I was in third grade

  • Loved her ! Acted with Mae West, like it gets better than that!

  • She is great.
