I am going to be producing typographical posters to bring back this classic film and give it life once again so that people want to watch the film. Maggie originally signed , if I recall, a 4 week deal to play the witch, but she ended up working 4 months on the film and made just over $18,000. A fortune in the 1930's!
My favorite movie, and my favorite part in the movie. I love Margaret Hamilton. No one could have done it better. She scared me to death when I watched this movie as a kid.
Little did she know but Margaret Hamilton created an iconic character that can NEVER be duplicated! She set the standard for all Hollywood productions with an "evil character" in it...
I am quite young, I look back at these time's and though I'm sure them were many problem's religious dogma homophobia racism war ect....sorta same as today, At least aesthetically there was a certain vibrato in people's appearance, A grace perhaps that just doesn't exist anymore, I would like to time travel to these time's!
OMG. I can't believe I've stumbled upon this! I was looking at videos about the musical (soon to be movie) "Wicked", which I had never heard of and instantly became fascinated with, when I spotted THIS video. This is amazing footage. What a GEM.
Who among us recalls the funniest line this lady ever delivered, "I'll tell ya where he was, ... he was steppng on my face!" Re: "My Little Chickadee"; WC Fields lowering himself out a window just as Margaret's snoopy character emerged from the window below and looked up to see what the commotion was...
@steve998 Holy cow, I feel the exact same. I don't know why, but the child catcher in Chitty sent a chill down my spine as a child. I believe that there was a scene where he looked in a window and I just about crapped myself. I look back on it now and it does not seem very scary.
I remember this nightmare I had as a kid where a witch was chasing me down popping bolts off locks and opening doors the dream in my mind's eye was symbolic but Dam I swear this is the exact same witch I seen lol
She was perfect! Absolutely mastered the role & then some. Still powerful after over 70 years. Remember her on tv as Cora the storekeeper in the coffee ads.
I remember seeing her on other television shows. We would all yell, "look, look. It is the wicked witch of the west, come look" and everyone would come running to see.
I've seen several other movies in which Ms. Hamilton had parts, and she was a damn fine character actress...she was the perfect actress for the role of the Wicked Witch of the West, my pretties....
Wow she looks real different from d movie. Scared back wen I was 6, n still scared now that I am 20 almost 21. Just looking at her n her voice. Wow grate actor make up n every thing 100% gud job.. rip to all in that movie.
In the upcoming Wizard of Oz 2015, word is Michelle Obama is the front runner for the role of the wicked witch..... She'll have plenty of free time on her hands.
Oh God, not Angela Lansbury again! I cant seem to get away from the old bint these days she seems to be following me everywhere when I turn on the tv. Angela Lansbury - the woman who looked like an old woman even when she was young!
I love Maggie. She's so sweet. It must have been difficult for her to have kids be so terrified by her performance. She loved kids. And animals too despite the 'your little dog too' line, Toto loved her.
@LoveFromShinola Maggie was a guest on "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" The lesson was on how some actors and actresses can play the roles of mean or scary people, but in real life, they can be very nice people. She talked about filming the "The Wizard of Oz", then she put on her costume, but without the green makeup. It was wonderful.
Can you imagine Lindsay Lohan playing the role of Dorothy?? Stumbling down the yellow brick road........
There are two silent movie DVD's of the Wizard of OZ, starring Oliver Hardy in that one. The other was called the Scarecrow of OZ and that one was directed by the writer Frank Braum himself!
Oh and the used by the actor playing the wizard wore a coat owned by Frank Braum it was found in a second hand store!
even as an older lady she was so pretty :) its great that she landed such a big role after all her hard work
hehe her reaction to being told she was considered for the witch reminds me of when john pinette was told he could be in broadway but he had to play a woman xD
This made me laugh (in a good way). I've seen her crop up in a number of films, and always wondered how she felt to play the Wicked Witch. I didn't know she was recruited for the role. She has a great sense of humor, and her performance definitely helped to make Oz one of the best films ever.
Fun fact: Did you know that when they filmed the Wicked Witch's opening scene in Oz, she was burned by the exit inferno? They had to take time off to let her heal!
I think the ugly witch is part of what gives the Wizard of Oz it's fairytale-like charm. I think the glamorous witch would have made it feel more modern.
The first time I ever saw The Wizard of Oz she scared me and I would always hide when she first appeared in that orange cloud of smoke. Then after watching it several times she became my favorite character, truly an excellent actress and a really nice lady. She sure was a rare talent!
When I was 6, seeing the Wizard of Oz for the first time, Margaret Hamilton frightened me. But as I grew older, I learned to love her. Since she was cast as Cora in Folgers Coffee commercials, I assume millions more loved her too. She was a great actor who continues to gain fans with each showing of this classic film.
She was incredible for that role, as a child watching this film I remember she scared the crap out of me and looking back she was absolutely amazing. :)
Margaret Hamilton was PERFECT in her role, and she was a very elegant figure as the Wicked With too. I am So glad nobody else got that part. The movie would never have been so good.
Without Maggie hamilton, "The Wizard of Oz could not have been the same. Although she only had about 12 mins. of camera time, she made this movie what it was. RIP, Maggie!!
I am glad they did not make the witch look seductive. As many nightmares as that witch gave me as a kid, I think it was worth it. Her scenes would not have had the same effect on me had she looked pretty. She was supposed to be scary and I wouldn't have been scared of her if she was pretty. In Snow White I did think the wicked queen was mean, but I wasn't scared of her until she turned into the ugly old lady.
@DisWldFrk90 i think a beautiful seductive wicked witch would have also worked well , it would have been creative and very original. but insted they went for the steriotypical cliched ugly old witch.
@weightfeather1 - Indeed she was...in fact, Judy Garland said years later that she had a hard time acting scared during her scenes w/the Witch b/c "Maggie" was such a warm person off-camera and a good friend.
"Childhood icon? This movie opened in 1939. Your childhood icons are the Power Rangers."
Oh please! EVERY KID in America has pretty much SEEN The Wizard of Oz. The whole reason it is so endearing and hasn't been touched by a disasterous remake yet is because everyone sees it as a timeless childhood classic, based on one of the greatest fantasy stories ever for its time.
@FlashX212: Hey, it wouldn't be ANY different than the OFFICIAL porn version of "Wonderland", ESPECIALLY given the Dorothy & Alice crossover (Oz-Wonderland Chronicles).
@jkmanring REALLY?? wow that is amazing!!! :) I was terrified of her in that film, she played an amazing part you must be so proud of her, rest in peace!! seems like she was a lovely funny gentle-lady in the interview part at the end :) xo
Even though she was the Wtich, and scared the hell out of me when I watched the film as a boy, there was always something about Margaret Hamilton that warmed me to her. When I saw the film when I got older, I felt bad when the water hit her!
@ezekielwahwah I don't get it either. The point of being an actor/actress is to convince the audience you are someone else... and if you do it well enough, then you become as famous as the character you portray...
which is, I guess, why few film fans know Gale Sondergaard, but generations of film fans know Margaret Hamilton...
@kangadillo I think I was about 5 or 6 and I couldn't have said it better...every time I watched it till past age 10 I think...delightfully scared to death every time she showed up!
In his book/audiobook Role Models, John Waters says she was one of his role models and she inspired his love of "oddly striped socks. Tim Burton does (have that love) too." He got a signed pic of her with her W.W.W. monogram
(in the mail). He said he would have loved to spend time with her at her home on an island off the coast of Maine. "No electricity? So what! More quality time to spend with a REAL
@Darrigrande yes she was ...who would have thought the woman under that green makeup and outfit was such a nice lady .. i admit she scared me as a kid but when i seen who was under all that makeup i was like shes a sweet lady are you sure she plays the witch lol but yea it was her and she played that roll very well.
I think the casting of this movie was a sort of miracle. So many close calls in which the wrong person could have been cast.
Additionally, it was released so close to Hitler's invasion of Poland. Several subtle allusions, I'd say. E.g., squadrons of flying monkeys sent off with almost a "heil" gesture.
@SSArcher11 actually on that note, when the casting call for munchkins came out floods of dwarves and midgets came to america from germany and poland to escape the nazi regime which would have put them to death for being born different.
okay how did i get here from sweeney todd

Margaret had the perfect bone structure and nose for a Witch! even her voice was
a additional accent sounding nasal and haggish. The Wizard of Oz certainly owes
most of its success to this magnificent character actress.

But Freddy's so much scarier than all them hags put together. Cant go wrong w/the hypnotic-power of dreams. The NSA's known that for years.

Anyone else thinks the witch has a ver strange resemblance to lady gaga??

Even though she was the Wtich, and scared the hell out of me when I watched the film as a boy, there was always something about Margaret Hamilton that warmed me to her. When I saw the film when I got older, I felt bad when the water hit her!

What's with that actress' TERROR of looking ugly? It's just a movie after all, she wasn't supposed to wear that witch makeup 24/7...
ezekielwahwah 8 months ago
@ezekielwahwah I don't get it either. The point of being an actor/actress is to convince the audience you are someone else... and if you do it well enough, then you become as famous as the character you portray...
which is, I guess, why few film fans know Gale Sondergaard, but generations of film fans know Margaret Hamilton...

@Bluepersian1994 Agreed. She looks like she'd made a great 'Golden Girl', if the show had started at such an early period. She's got humor and spunk!

So what! More quality time to spend with a REAL
legendary talent!"

SSArcher11 10 months ago
@SSArcher11 actually on that note, when the casting call for munchkins came out floods of dwarves and midgets came to america from germany and poland to escape the nazi regime which would have put them to death for being born different.
