Harrison was not keen to play Dr Doolittle. That alone would set the film on the road to tanksville, but there were a host of other production problems as well.
However, it sounds like this Dr Doolittle is undergoing reappraisal as well. It happens a lot with films; they bomb the first time and some become notorious for doing so - but eventually they become cherished.
And yet such a wonderful, beautiful, light-hearted fantasy of a film. There's no accounting for some peoples tastes. Some of the most criticized things in history have become the most cherished and beloved, and we revere them as classics. I'm so glad this was part of my childhood. It feeds the imagination. :)
Not the best trailer, as it includes some of the weakest songs in the show- the very boring "I Think I Like You", and we hear the music for "Fabulous Places". There is not that much romance in the show- Emma only admits she loves Dr. Dolittle right at the very end, and I don't think he loves her. He likes her, but I think that's all. If she had to be with one of them she should have been with Matthew.
The behind-the-scenes story about this movie's production is fascinating. For most of those involved, it was hell on earth, running horrendously over-schedule and colossally over-budget, and it almost ruined 20th Century Fox. Expensive location shootings were a disaster, with much of it having to be reshot back in Hollywood. The relationships between principle actors spiraled downward into a sort of open warfare. That this family-friendly film ever made it to the screen is a miracle.
box office reports mean jack squat towards the quality of the film. it's a wonderful life, the shawshank redemption & fight club were all box-office failures & now are insanley popular. meanwhile, meet the spartans was no. 1 when it opened, i really wish i was making that up.
@harlanmiller Willy Wonka did shit at the box office, yet it's a beloved kids film. Its remake on the other hand, was a blockbuster, and no one even remembers it today.
i hope frank clanton is happy with his cynicism of a beautifully crafted classic and it is beside the point whether or not the movie flopped is was wonderful to grow up with and gave a charming face and friendly view of a classic novel forever impacting children since its release and us as adults i hope you fall in a well and drown but thats just cause i'm a bigger ass than you are jealous
This movie was delightful, it was made during the time when Hollywood was still turning out great musicals. Rex Harrison and Anthony Newly were truly talented. I wish they made movies like this now.
@JuanMacready The film is not brilliant, I admit, but it has its moments. And you cannot insult people for having cancer- it is something you can't help. R.I.P. Rex Harrison.
Frank, you people with your obsenities, they never make sense. Movies are incapable of F_ _ _ _ _ _G crap, if you don't like it, you don't like it. Go view something more to your taste, whatever dregs barrel that would be in.
shitt movie !

The scene at around 0;20 isn't on the video of the movie. It must have been cut.

This awful crapfest FLOPPED everywhere.

Frank, maybe to you it did but many of us liked it and certainly it was better than the remake with Eddie Murphy.

@conyelp No, the remake was FAR better than this unwatchable cuntfest with Cancer Boy Harrison.
