The 2 main waves are class 4+ and 5 respectively. There is no such thing as class 6 (unrunnable). This stretch has been run "legally" multiple times, twice by high-profile crews -a crew in the 1980s for an ABC special, and in the 2000s, for Scott Lindgren's dvd "Burning Time 2". The 1980s run is on youtube; type "First Legal Descent of the Niagara Gorge". Many others have illegally run this section. It is enormously powerful; incredible energy; but relatively straightforward.

Considering close to 50% of the river is diverted for hydro electric power above the falls, you are actually looking at about half of the power of whta the river looked like prior to the 50s
I just visited Niagara Falls. And where the whirlpool is they tell you that they are level 6 rapids and you know what call me crazy but I believe them. There was recently an 11 year old girl who fell in the water and the rapids and died. That water is fierce, it is nothing to joke at. You can hear the water at least 5 or 6 blocks away. I wouldn't go swimming there-lol.
I take it she didn't have I life jacket on. Not that it might do a whole lot for her if she got caught in one of the whirlpools. But as long as you don"t capsise it looks like you could make it. Just a bunch of fast moving water. And strong edie currents that could suck you down if you ended up going for a swim.
if you go about 300 or 400 yards downstream from where this footage was taken, there are 20 to 30 foot standing waves...and the water speed exceeds 40 km/h
The signs there are not consistent with the current rating scale then. There is a youtube video of the Jackson's running this gorge not long ago. Definitely just big water class V. Just search videos ofr "Niagara gorge"
Big water yes class VI no. Just because the state put up a bunch of signs to scare people dose not make this class VI and yes it has been run (rafts and kayaks) without the people dieing.
I swam through there last night !!! Piece of cake....
