Totally agree with bluesbrother 37. I'd be more than happy to stump up to watch this sort of TV, especially as i'm stuck out in the far east against my will, which has absolutely nothing that i like and everything i hate.
I'm an American, and although I know this is a British television ID, a couple American networks (Nickelodeon, for one) imported some Thames programmes back in my childhood days, so this logo is not unfamiliar to me, either. I remember seeing this logo before shows such as Count Duckula and Bananaman came on. So nice to see it again!
I saw this Thames Logo before an episode of Button Moon on YouTube and I recognised the music from BBC Radio 1. It is heard before a Jaguar Skills mix is played on the station.
@yokichi40 I loved watching this intro as a kid preceeding "The Benny Hill Show"....it also reminded me of The Beatles somehow too. In '86 I finally got to visit London, a town I knew I would love. This logo helped inspire me to realize my dream.
When i was a tiny kid in the 70's, i remember when all the educational programs finished, this came up. But I also seem to remember they would play some stirring music for a few minutes with that picture in the background. Then Peter Marshal or David Hamilton would introduce pipkins or rainbow.
It was a brief appearence but it was on the episode where Homer and Bart were watching a British comedy show, based on football hooligans, on PBS. The Thames logo, cartoon style, was on before the British sitcom started. I think it was a mark of respect from the writers for Thames. How cool is that!
Indeed! It was used from 1969 to 1989 and is the longest continuously-used ident on British television (possibly even in the whole world, but I'm not sure about that - does anyone know?). There were some very minor tweaks over the years (e.g. a 'ripple' effect was present in the water until the mid-70s and the last few notes of the music changed subtly around 1972), but never enough for most viewers to notice. I think the reason it lasted so long was that it was bloody good!!!
I used to see this at the beginning of Thames programs on the ABC in Australia in the 70s and 80s (Minder, The Bill etc). I was a bit disappointed to finally get to London and find those landmarks - St. Paul's, Parliament, Tower Bridge - actually aren't that close together!
this theme give me the creeps in my childhood days cause after this "tomorrow people" began. This tv program scared me totally...still,i want to see it again.
Completely. :) When I discovered Nick Jr was showing repeats of early 80s Rainbow, me and the wife sat there enthralled - it was like being five again! Seeing the Thames ident on a proper telly again after all those years was magic.
Yes... it's true but Nevertheless it was well made. But he can't be diffused on internet because the images were filmed in a sort of secondary school and it is forbidden to put on-line this kind of video... not envy to be sent dismissed ! lol

Thames stuck with this ident for twenty years, it must have been a shock to many viewers when they eventually updated it!

Most didn't see the update - as pre-programme idents were scrapped by ITV on 1st January 1988.
