I am not a mason or even close, but I do try my hand at times, while under the supervision of an ex-union mason with close to 30yrs exp, hes taught me alot. The first thing he told me when tucking in a new brick, a missing joint or a ripped joint, was to fill the joint completely until it squeezes out the seems, and I do,...And, I really doubt he just tells me that to have a chuckle on the inside while he watches me do it, I bet its got something to do with the stability of the overall structure
Oh and yes,..we use tarps, so we dont have to clean much later,...it saves time and effort for us, cause we're not picking rocks out of gardens for hours on end. You dont just leave them there, do you?
Hi Jim You will probably tell me to go eat the corn out of your shit but if I was doing the job I would butter each brick before inserting into the breast then useing a narrow finger trowel push as much mortar in as possible to get it solid then finish with the jointer. You must have balls of steel to build a chimney stack while balancing on one plank. I thought it was only me that did crazy things like that. Greetings from old England.
@rollindanny57 LOL! No way, broI I ain't rude like that. I do what I do and it lasts. I've had the same phone # for almost 20, and people just don't NEED to call me back because my work lasts, but I appreciate your watching my vids, and posting:)
I have only replaced earthquake damaged chimneys with metal chimneys. A skilled masons hand is hard to come by (I tried it once and didn't stick with it, tough work but I am sure very satisfying). You seemto have a good hand.
Others seem a bit offended by your "courseness". I find it humorous. If you are doing a good job and are missing social graces at least you are doing a good job. I'd rather throw out the graces and get the job done right.
I'm sorry to hear that! On big jobs I ask 40%up front. I want enough $ to pay for materials, hired help, and to file charges with the magistrate if I don't GET PAID! I got a $500 tip once on a 47 cu.yd. driveway job. I am spoiled, I guess, as most of my clientele are appreciative of my expertise. Thank you for the comment;) TCW...i.e. NTJ
Every job has an order of operation. The acid wash will forgive all. Ya see, that's why YOU are a W-2 wage slave watching MY instructional vids, LOL! This ain't line work. I can prove that because you earn $100 a week and I get $100 a BRICK! You should learn from these vids, w2. TCW
trust me, if i produced work like that in the UK i would down the benefits office within the hour.
i earn about £800.00 gbp a week, and i have been in work for the last 28 years so i have a rough idea as to what is a good job or not and this video is definitely not.
I don't care about your pay, location OR opinion. Tell me, why do you guys call yourselves "gay" if you're always bitching? LOL! Get a life, loser. TCW
FUCK ... ALL THESE WHITE TRASH BRICKLAYERS all the same... U DONT HAVE A CLUE ON HOW TO RELAY BRICK... I BET A SWEEPS USE THERE FINGERS A LITTLE.. i certainly do,it so much easier than|*****ANY *****TROWEL.. AND I HAVE THEM ALL./,,.I can squeeze the mortar in and get a clean finish... now when laying bricks, ya . we all use trowels... but tuckpointing ,, man, fingers ,ass,.nose, headwhatever it takes to make it look good ,last and, work efficient.... so post some vids if u **WHITE
Don't you consider a margin trowel a trowel? LOL! I'de watch more and talk less if I were you, you'll learn the worth and function of tools. Now, can you imagine trying to put new bedjoints in with a 10' marshalltown?
You are not a mason! It looks like Romania in 1970's.
I've been doing this for many years and hardly ever wet my fingers with mortar. You have cement all over your hands. You don't know what you are doing! My helper is better then you. At least he works clean. Look at your hands man. Where is your mortar pan?
I bet you get lime burns once a week. I was getting them when I was 15- Amateur!
Lime Burns? What the heck are you even talking about? You just have girlie hands, LOL! I was a steelworker in the seabees in the 70s and my hands are like sandpaper! Put up a vid or quit yer chirpin. Talk is cheap.

My brother Tom was just over and I showed him this vid, he said "how else are you supposed to do it?"
Tom is a union mason. He finished his apprenticeship back in the 80s. He finished his apprenticeship when YOU were BORN, LOL!!!
Get over yourself.

What I cant believe is that your not filling all the joints completely your just more or less jointing them !
How is any of that going to improve structural integrity of the chimney ?

How would you know what a bricklayer would use? Also, a margin trowel IS a trowel and probably the most common tool amongst all the trowel arts.
