There was no official USAF "nickname" for the YF-23A. The Northrop YF-23A team personnel chose the name "Black Widow II" -- commemorating the Northrop P-61 Black Widow, the first American aircraft specifically designed as a night-fighter.

The YF-22 and YF-23 were different in many ways. The YF-23 was designed for speed and maneuverability.

The cost they payd for the F-22 program to finish first before any of their competition was just too high. They had to suck up money from the rest of the world and this triggerred financial crisiss. However as it was artificially triggerred it had a negative side effect. Rest of the world is forsaking dollar effectivelly sinking your "aamerican dream" to the darkest depths. By 2020 there won't be any america anymore. Don't worry about Russia, worry about USA and its fate...

Oh and one more thing. T-50 will be significantly cheaper and better ofcourse. Just like the 27 model to the Eagle. The eagle went into serial production nearly 10 years earlier than the 27 model but Russian one was significantly better and this superiority lasted for allmost 2 and half decades. The SU-27 just achieved parity with the F-15. The Su-27s in the 80s had poor radar performance, the R-27 missile was a huge disappointment. It was the best the soviets had but it wasn't on par with the eagle or tomcats.

The F-15 back then had only slightly better radar performance than Su-27 and by the time the 27 model was introduced the F-15 were using AIM-7 Sparrow missiles which were considered inferior to the R-27 Alamo models. Together with very impressive R-73 Soviets had virtually every aspect of the Air to Air combat on their side advantage. Only the F-14 Tomcat had Aim-54 Phoenix but this missile as it was too heavy and fast, for a fighter sized aircraft it was no problem to avoid the missile.

Uh no the Alamo was kinetically superior, that's it. It couldn't sort ground clutter well. Had major issues with ECM and chaff, and there were fuse issues as well. The Aim-7M while having shorter legs was a better missile.

The F-14 Aim-54 combo worked well against fighters, in the Iran Iraq war and was resistant to jammers supplied by the french which were much better then anything put forward by the USSR in the 80s.

That said tomcats would be busy with Backfires.

Dude the official performance characteristics state the exact opposite. while the ground clutter was a problem by then to any radar including wester one as well. The wester ECM were pretty inneffective due to the peak power the 27 radar could provide was too much for them to jam. And the F-14 with Phenix were exactly for the same reason retired when they were pretty much useless against fighters. Read the official US Navy statements. Check out the wikipedia.

The Aim-7M had a kill ratio of about 40% in the gulf war, the R-27 in the war between Ethiopia and Eritrean, Mig-29s and Su-27s flown by Ukrainian and Russian Mercenaries was suspected of o kills, but a possible one still gives it 1 for 24. The R-73 did much better.

As for the F-14, when employed in a an aggressive role the Iranian F-14/Aim-54 combo was considered deadly.

The US Navy retired the F-14 because the airframes were old and there was no real mission for such an airplane.

From 2 confirmed shots AIM-54 haven't scored any confirmed kill in Iraq. The African pals had R-27 R/T missile versions in poor quality, seekers were not under maintenance and generally in poor conditions. On top of that these versions were sort of "reduced capability" ones. The ER/ET version still employed today have much better seekers, range and kill zone. However none of these missiles were used in a conflict with western jets. In Georgia against Georgian planes they were deadly.

Best AESA radars are Israel ones, but the second are Russians. USA comess behind. And in fact the first such radar was passive phased array Zaslon mounted on Mig-31 made in Soviet Union in a time when USA was only dreaming about such technology. To this day no aircraft of a fighter class have the performance and capabilities this thing has. the closes one was today retired F-14. And currently there is a hundred times more Russian planes in use than American ones - especially Africa.

there are only 3 areas of military that US is better than Russia. Ships - its because Russia lacks the numbers of dry docs to built up to date ships, but its negotiating with Ukraine naval shipyards in Nikolaiv and other. And third area where Russians are inferior is command&control but again this is becomming a thing od the past.

Dude the modern Russian equipment and hardware either airborne or ground systems will murder pretty much everything the US has including the raptor which is not stealthy at all to the S-400 Favorit. Russia might have some updated technology but their number of latest weapons are not that many, Su-35 is the latest Russia can offer now, and only 12 of them are operation. F-15E/F-18SH will out perform Su-27SK, only few in operation. Also Russian bombs are not that great either, even Kazakhs/Uzbeks are now buying US weapons. Both were former Soviet partners.

35 BM model is newly and just entered production. The Su-27SM which is a base for SK derivate is far more capable in air-to-air mode than any F-15 and whatsoever F-18. From the times long lasting the 27 model had superior maneuverability to anything the USA had to offer. Now the only thing that is better is a very expensive not under production anymore and in low quantities deployed F-22. And even that is by its stealth characteristics better as trust vectoring models of 27 are better.

Where did you read that? Please state your source. Because my information sources tells me that Mig-29 is going to prevail in Indian skies for years to come... Just Recently India purchased Mig-29K models for their carrier(s) and are working with Russians to upgrade old ones. On top of that India is working with Russia on their own indigenous fighter under the LCA Tejas programme andd not to mention the PAK FA 5th generation future F-22 rival. US fighters are nowhere near to enter IAF as i see.

Russian figther planes were known for poor electronics, but since the economic heals took place under putin many foregn eletronic vendors started selling to Russia and local ones started to bloom as well. Today you have Russian made state of the art avionics equal or even better than the US one. Proof of that is official parameters of many Russian AESA radars are far better than what USA can offer. By raw power and performance the US aircraft were allways behind Russian counterparts.

Dream? Russia just now tested their new T-50 jet & it's first Russian 5th Gen fighterjet when US already have 5th Gen F-22 5 years ago. By the time Russia deploy 150 T-50s, US will have 300 F-35s and 200 F-22s.
