My Great-grand father fought in this war, he was under the command of "El Catorce" who appears in this movie. he was from San Julian, Jalisco. the first town in Mexico that raised arms against the federal oppression.
Throughout time humans have been fighting over religious beliefs around the world. As a Metaphysician, I studied the emotional and psychological aspects of human nature. It seems to me that we have learned very little in 10,000 years. People still die because of religious beliefs and few are interested in The Oneness, unity etc. despite a shift of awareness. Go see this movie, if only to support the people who bothered to make it and appreciation a look at history.
@drmargaret Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
to enlarge their estates, all of this done under the laws of reform, The librals were supposed to provide education and other services that the church provided,(for free) under the Spanish Crown and later the first Empire, but they never did, because they needed serfs to work their fields and later under Porfirio Diaz, their factories. So you see the only real frien that Mexican people ever had was the Catholic Church, and not their government.
liberal republican governments have only given Mexico heartaches and troubles. 1) Liberals disistabilized the Mexican Empire, (a constitutional monarchy), 2) the Liberals lost half of the Mexican terretory to the US, 3) Juarez a supporter of US made a deal with the US that if it would have been ratified by the US congress Mexico would have become a Defacto protectorate of the US, (The Mclane-Ocampo treaty), 4) Liberals confiscated Indian communal lands to then split it amongst themselves
nope this film recounts the story of the Mexican people, who in their majority are fervent catholics, who fought an injustice commited by their govrnment against their belifs and their way of life. The Catholic church was, is, and it will be the only true source of justice in Mexico. The Church defended Indian and peasent alike against opresive colonial and republican governments, it gave the people schools, hospitals, orphanages and a higher culture.
maybe you didnt talk to the right people , My mother and father remembered and Ive heared plenty of stories also from the families of the good people who fought to defend the church.
This film trailer distorts the reality behind the Cristero War; it paints the govt as the bad guys when in reality the govt opposed the Church because it had oppressed the Mexican people in 300yrs of Spanish rule in conjunction w/the Crown, supported the Conservatives who devastated the country in 19th century (and were defeated), orchestrated the French Intervention, backed the murderer of Madero (Huerta) & his coup, & opposed land reform for which the Revolution of 1910 was fought.
K, I see nowhere when this film will come out in theaters? Or is it available on DVD? I read coming out 2011, but the year is almost over, so does any1 know the answer? When will this movie come out?
I agree with DXXMan, my grandfather fought the war, and I know that his descendants would appreciate this movie, especially if it was in their native language.
unfortunately in Mexico and every other countries you are not allowed to know the true ,I am not religious at all either but I fight for human rights ,I am Mexican and I have to say that education in this country sucks , they don´t want you to know more than you should because that´s when you get power and they will be no longer the rulers .
@tlatelilco I live in Mexico, too and I have to say, education is not great, it is far from great. But the reasons behind it are far more complex than just the gov't not wanting an educated public. In fact, that's not true, as the gov't NEEDS an educated public to survive and compete w/other nations. Elba Esther Gordillo's policies, power, and influence are the main, but not the only, reasons why education lags far behind in Mexico.
The reason this movie hasn't been shown is because the Producers and Distributors are betting for better exposure and marketing with the upcoming visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Mexico in Spring of 2012. Coincidentially, the main agenda for the Pope will be concentrated in the Cristero states of central Mexico, and finalizing with the gran opening of the Cristero Cathedral in Guadalajara.
@lovellespice No this is what happens when radical extremists take power. If they were Catholics, they would've been putting down alleged enemies of the church.
I'm not religious at all, but i find this clip to be very powerful. it is important to stand up and defend what you believe in, especially if it is being taken away.
@lovellespice As opposed the to what? The Roman Catholics and the crusades? Or the Holy Roman Empire and the 30 year war? Islamic theocracy with sharia law? French wars of religion? The Reconquista? You need to brush up on your history.
Even if you are opposed, you can't change the history and also you can't denial the history, if you refuse the facts who was happend, you never built your story and the worse you make the same mistakes... We need to know the truth and search them in all circunstances
@lovellespice are you kidding me? Katholic Kingdoms genocieded all Latin Amerika since its discovery. Millions died in North and South America so that the survivors to be turned to christians. What happened to the Pro colombian civilizations? What happened to the majority of the true North amerincans?Faith is allways used as a weapon and has killed hundreds of millions///
@YiannisThiakos In North America there were not Catholics... If you want to accuse anyone, however, find out who were the foundators of the USA - masons & WASPs. They have nothing in common with Roman Catholicism, and can be considered as it' s exact contradiction rather.
@YiannisThiakos I wander also if you heard anything about the Leyes Nuevas. It is very difficult to participate in serious discussion without a basic knowledge abot historical facts. In fact your post do not even deserve a serious answer
@robertgorgon Mexico was not collonized by the Spanish? Ok after slauttering all 50% of the locals and distroying their culture and goverment for gold, ok, lets make a law to preserve the remaining tribes, that are already under spanish rule.Sound good right?I know "New Law". But i think it came too late to alter any cruelty.
@YiannisThiakos Yes, they came the first time as agents of colonization, but in the end who became the most ardent, vigorous defender of the indigenous people and human rights in Latin America ?..ever heard of Oscar Romero, Bartolome de las Casas ? In many far flung corners of Latin America many people, especially Indians, never often heard or received help from their government, the only help they have is the Church and it's priests, that is a constant fact that no one could measure up..
@YiannisThiakos that's why when you go to Mexico or any other Latin american (Argentina and Uruguay the only exceptions ) country all you see is Indians and mestizos...doh
@jaruca2007 Well you wanna tell me that Cortes for example, took over power by accident? That the native mexicans suddenly felt sympathy for him and united with them?
Or Americo Vespucci's and Colombus' colonists behaved the native americans like they did to tother europeans? I think when they met them they behaved to them like uncivilized animals. And forced them to become Christians. As they behaved to the african people they brought later to the americas so as to be used as slaves
@lovellespice And what happens when the religious are in power? The Inquisition, the Crusades, Fransisco Franco's fascist, ultra-Catholic dictatorship (1936-75) the Lord's Resistance Army (Ugandan, Christian rebels who partake in murder, abduction, mutilation, sexual enslavement, child soldier-recruiting) 300,000 Bosnian Muslims killed by Serb Christians (Yugoslav Wars), etc. Also, not all atheists are Jacobin fanatics just like not all Christians are extremists. Read a book, besides the Bible
@KeepCalmAndPartyHard LOL..what a false comparison, the Lord's Resistance Army are Christians ? The word Lord doesn't make an organization or a group Christian.. that group has syncretic beliefs, which mean it's a mix of voodoo, animism, mysticism, superstition, and occultism. They practice cannibalism, ritual taking of drug and alcohol. Their leader, Joseph Kony, is a self proclaimed prophet, just like in other cults the world over..call them Christians when they practice very little of it!!..
@lovellespice Dark Ages and World War II happened because religious fanaticism was ruling countries. No, my friend, atheists or not, shit happens because of shitty people. Having a religion or not is not the cause of the problems. It is the disrespect what creates it, and if you wanna point atheists to it, then you're throwing the stones without a reason for it.
I don't know anything about the story but if its such an important event the movie should have been in spanish. Peter O'Toole + Andy Garcia = must watch for me. Also did anyone else thought some of the mustaches look kinda fake?
its funny how no one in the US knows about this story because the US only writes the nice things its done in the World...but those nice things are all bull crap too ha
@ohbella1 Not only is the US ignorant about this, also Mexico. This is not taught in schools in Mexico and I've asked around Mexican communities if they heard of it and many of them said no.
@t4214u14me Not sure about all of Mexico. But where we live people know about it. Could be because the Christero's war was mainly fought in the territory we lived in Jalisco lost Altos Region.
@t4214u14me Yes, many people here in Mexico doesn't know anything or not too much about it, because what public education teaches about is in a paragraph of the history books, more or less (truefact). On the other hand, there's also many people that knows what really happened, and what kind of people governed at that time ... but, unfortunately, the government and its attempt to keep the mexicans ignorant are bigger.
for those living near Los Angeles, check out the very moving play "Viva Cristo Rey" playing till the end of OCT in Santa Monica, CA - at the Miles Memorial Playhouse - play in English- got me very interested into this period in Mexico. It is about Blessed Father Miguel Pro... who made the chant that inspired the movement.
@Angelus24 I already did but some thing happened to me that could not be explained by man, only by GOD. Ive already been down that path and let me tell u this, Its much easier to think there is no Heaven and hell, but I hope that u find the truth. There is a Heaven and a GOD that loves u. Even though you reject GOD he doesn't, he Loves u. He came down from heaven and died for our sins. What will u do after life and see a light that says to u "Have you Loved? What have you done with your life?":(
@stang46281 Well i´m ok with that, in my case i don´t reject god, cause i know theres no such a thing, to me is irrelevant the name you want to give to an abstract thing that could explain with no efforts the reality, if you think that there is god, is fine i´m ok and im not going to insult you or enter in a neverending absurd discussion, i´m a not believer you are a believer, cool!!! we still can be friends , greetings!!!
@MrNumber87 In fact "modernization" was the favourite term of Soviet propaganda from 1920 to 1950. Many industrial designs that derive from this term of history were simply horrific and completely useless in practical and economical point of view. Great effort that cost lifes of milions of people who were forced to slavery wark. All in vain. It is Stalin not Lenin to be considered to have made this civilization jump. And it not right because SU remained backward for commie rules
@MrNumber87 Your opinion about lenin is ... very controversial. Stalin is probably the worst criminal in the history, Lenin is ranked only a few positions behind him. It can claimed viciously that Lenin died too soon to kill another milions of people to climb on the very top of world' s the worst villains ranking.
It should also be in Spanish, many people in Mexico would be very interested in seeing this film and it would be a better representation of this true story if it was Spanish not dubbed in Spanish. My grandmother lived through this, that's why I feel so strongly about it.
@DXXMan Mexicanos wouldn't like this movie. Mainly because nuestra raza is very picky when it comes to historical films about Mexico. The movie Zapata with Alejandro Fernandez was heavily criticized. So are others that fail to come in mind at this moment. But I think it's good that it is in english this way Chicanos can see what was going down.
@DXXMan Maybe they did want to make it in Spanish but couldn't get the movie funded/produced on such a high level if they were to do so. There are a lot of politics behind movie making.
Even though the writers/producers are Christians, they still want the movie to be as successful as possible while keeping as true to the story as possible... I'm sure there is some reason for it being in English.
My only problem with this film is that the lead character is Andy Garcia, it should not matter much but he is Cuban, i know and agree he is a good actor but this is a movie about Mexico. It should be an all around Mexican (Mexican American) cast. Eva Longoria is barely Mexican (more American which is ok). Come on, you would not put Vicente Fernandez , Antonio Aguilar, or Eric del Castillo as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin in a film about the American Revolution.
@MrNumber87 Mmm, lets ponder on that statement, you have a piece of cloth that has been put under the telescope and it has been determined that the image was not painted. There are no indications of paint strokes. This type of cloth only lasts no more than 10 years and yet this particular one has been there for 480 years. The eyes have an optical effect that it is only possible on human eyes.
@MrNumber87 there's something you really need, and I have plenty of it = FAITH believe me i dont care what you say! :) I LOVE JESUS, and that's all.peace
@nortenoman Ok, since you can't get past the idea of killing anyone, and yes it is alright to Kill non-Catholics and Catholics in cause of True Justice. Though you fanatico religioso de marxism, you're cause has killed more innocent people than the Church even if you compare the number of crooks and murderous moors we conquered and mamed in defense of neighbor as they still do to this day... in fact more than the Muslims and Christians put together even in all of history.
@Martin4Mary4Ever you are cofused. you being a religious fanatic who supports killing people for their religious beliefs does not make me a communist.
@nortenoman I never called you a professed communist. I called you a fanatic of Marx, Obama is a "capitalist" didn't you know? yet he has followed Carl Marx's advise to the very "T". You've not read my words either, as I've left no barrier of religion as to who to kill to protect the well being of a society or individual. Justice is not to be mistaken as mercy nor mercy for justice, both are necessary. That lesson is left to the Greeks and Early Church Fathers completely solved.
@Martin4Mary4Ever you sound like a very dangerous person to democracy. you sound like you as well support a government of total tyranny where freedom is unheard of. for the record i am in no way a fanatic of marx never did like the guy. you on the contrary sound like a guy who supports a teocratic government with a stalin like of tyranny.
@MrNumber87 Mmm, lets ponder on that statement, you have a piece of cloth that has been put under the telescope and it has been determined that the image was not painted. @MrNumber87 Yeah, I'm sure that's what the wanted to do. They wanted to take Mexico backwards, so to take it forwards the Secularist Govt just had to ruthlessly kill thousands of people. Great progress there, MrNumber. Again, if "progress" (as you define it) results in killing people because of beliefs they hold.... then that's certainly not any type of "progress" to speak of.
@MrNumber87 They were ruthlessly killed for their faith - that makes them martyrs. There's nothing obvious about what you're saying. You make the claim that to hold religious belief is in contradiction to "reason" (again, as you define it) and I'm not in agreement with you at all. You keep saying "suppress the people" but that's what the secularlist govt did to the Mexican faithful. So, it's okay to suppress sometimes but only when "REASON!!" is the battle cry? You're inconsistent.
@MrNumber87 So you drop one form of superstition for another? I mean this sincerely, you're a disturbing person. You seem to take joy in the fact that innocent were killed. You rationalize it by saying "but but but!! They lacked reason!!". However, you don't know that. You say it, but you don't know it. For someone in love with 'reason' (as you structure it) you seem quite unreasonable. You value the tool over the user of the tool - that's superstitious.
@MrNumber87 Even if they were "against progress" (whatever is supposed to be entailed by "progress" as you use it).... that (being against "progress"), for you, is enough to warrant killing them? That's disturbing. If your high and mighty ideals of "Secularism" "Scientism" Rationalism" leads to killing innocent people in the name of "progress" then I can assure you - those ideals are nothing worth striving for. & I can further assure you, you will never reach the hearts and minds of people.
@MrNumber87 And you are nothing but a red scum, trying to convice us that Lenin, Stalin and other murderers were good. I assume you're a homosexual whore? In other case, why would you listen to this Eric Heatherly thing? We don't want you here, just understand this :)
@MrNumber87 Yea, scientific materialism is AWESOME! Not quite as cool as atheism (and probably doesn't require as much faith as atheism). But a life centered on the production and acquisition of material things. Right and wrong? Morality? Bah, humbug. Fighting to preserve an inalienable freedom? HA! Such antiquated nonsense! Those fascists! Why didn't they allow the state to outlaw the faith and kill their priests!
@MrNumber87 Someone doesn't know the history of the Cristeros. MrNumber, you should at least take the time to read up on them. I think you might change your mind on them - I did.
They should have imprisoned any religious figure that had ties to the government. Religion brought murder, rape, torture, and mass atrocities to the Americas. I don't understand the fervor for Catholicism in Mexico. Did not they Holy Fathers and Bishops order the killings and murders of those who did not convert from their "savage" beliefs. I spit on all catholics and for that matter ALL religious conquistadores that arrived in the name of their savage god!
@Huitzilipochtli1 Religion stopped human sacrifice, mass murder, tyranny of an uneducated people and brought enlightenment and truth to their country. The murder and rape you are talking about was brought about by the greed of spanish settlers who like you hated catholicism and spat on their faith. The holy father and bishops have never ordered any murders and u must distinguish between murder and just war. You need to read your history before you make sweeping uneducated and bigoted comments.
@macbenac100 Thank you very much for your insightful yet blindly written reply. Your faith blinds you to the truth. Bigoted? I would rather be called "bigoted" then to follow and represent an evil organization such as Christianity. The murder, rape and torture brought upon by the Spaniards was not only fueled by greed but by religious fervor. How else can a person justly commit atrocities so freely? They did it because their shit holy book told them it was ok!
1. "Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel". (Deuteronomy 17:12)
2. "They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13)
@macbenac100 Maybe you should read your so called "peaceful" bible. Its full of "just" war, murder, rape, killing of women and children. Geez!! Sorta scary to be a peace loving Christian.
@macbenac100 Before you claim to know what Bishops and a made up pathetic holy father has ordered read your bible and REAL unabashed history. And to claim that I am uneducated? I am an educated person whom actually teaches History with an emphasis on Meso-American Studies. If you like, I will gladly give you daily history lessons free of charge. Just let me know.
@Huitzilipochtli1 First please excuse me for jumping in. Second, you may already know about the "Leyes Nuevas" of 1542 abolishing slavery of Indians in all Catholic Spanish colonies. You may also know about the "Leyenda Negra" which were spread by the advent of the printing press. Furthermore, you may know of the "Minutes on the International Symposium 2004 on the Inquisition". Recent scholarship challenges much of what was taught about Spain, examination of Charles V's letters and court docs.
@macbenac100 I am not in favor of killing religious leaders and followers. I just want them out of politics and out of my life. Religion is the most evil dogma man has ever created.
@macbenac100 the 'holy father' and bishops HAVE always ordered murders and massacres and other atrocities. YOU need to read your history before you make sweeping uneducated and bigoted comments. for starters look up THE SPANISH INQUISITION.
We do not deny there have been many erros, but when some one says they have been always done, then you are an hipocrit or a lier or just a parrot that repeats what listened from the tv or a magazine or a protestant.
@nortenoman If you consider killing heretics who kill preachers, priests, and faithful Catholics... You're spot on on "atrocities" but by natural order, defending your family is not a sin even if it requires killing another person. The "Spanish Inquisition" only affected Baptized Catholics and was rather laxed, under the Church's examination. Though the King of Spain did have another that banned Muslims and Protestants in order to maintain order, his was rarely violent. Check our your sources
@Martin4Mary4Ever so your are saying that it was okay to kill babtized catholics? the inquisition not only targeted innocent babtized catholics but also other groups including jews that were called 'marranos' pigs. and for the record the cristeros were NOT defending their family. YOU check out your sources.
@Huitzilipochtli1 Viva Christo Rey!!! I would die for my faith and I call on anyone else out there who has the guts to say this. Some people stand up for what they believe other people attack them because they have guilt on their conscience and blame God for the mess they have made out of their own lives. It is so unbelievable that a movie like this is actually going to be shown in todays Godless, faithless, selfish, biased society
The time line here should be of interest to all who understand the extension of the Communist influence on the world at large post-1922. The overthrow of Diaz was due to an individual too long in control but the subsequent election of Calles introduced marxist view of history to Mexico. Understand once there was a semblance of a 'truce' post-1929 the same agitators sensed the next play for their hothouse might be Spain.

This film trailer distorts the reality behind the Cristero War; it paints the govt as the bad guys when in reality the govt opposed the Church because it had oppressed the Mexican people in 300yrs of Spanish rule in conjunction w/the Crown, supported the Conservatives who devastated the country in 19th century (and were defeated), orchestrated the French Intervention, backed the murderer of Madero (Huerta) & his coup, & opposed land reform for which the Revolution of 1910 was fought.

unfortunately in Mexico and every other countries you are not allowed to know the true ,I am not religious at all either but I fight for human rights ,I am Mexican and I have to say that education in this country sucks , they don´t want you to know more than you should because that´s when you get power and they will be no longer the rulers .
tlatelilco 2 months ago

@YiannisThiakos In North America there were not Catholics... If you want to accuse anyone, however, find out who were the foundators of the USA - masons & WASPs. They have nothing in common with Roman Catholicism, and can be considered as it' s exact contradiction rather.

KeepCalmAndPartyHard 1 month ago
@KeepCalmAndPartyHard LOL..what a false comparison, the Lord's Resistance Army are Christians ? The word Lord doesn't make an organization or a group Christian.. that group has syncretic beliefs, which mean it's a mix of voodoo, animism, mysticism, superstition, and occultism. They practice cannibalism, ritual taking of drug and alcohol. Their leader, Joseph Kony, is a self proclaimed prophet, just like in other cults the world over..call them Christians when they practice very little of it!!..

DXXMan 5 months ago 15
@DXXMan Mexicanos wouldn't like this movie. Mainly because nuestra raza is very picky when it comes to historical films about Mexico. The movie Zapata with Alejandro Fernandez was heavily criticized. So are others that fail to come in mind at this moment. But I think it's good that it is in english this way Chicanos can see what was going down.
killerrey 5 months ago
@DXXMan Maybe they did want to make it in Spanish but couldn't get the movie funded/produced on such a high level if they were to do so. There are a lot of politics behind movie making.
Even though the writers/producers are Christians, they still want the movie to be as successful as possible while keeping as true to the story as possible... I'm sure there is some reason for it being in English.
lisalrocks 3 months ago
My only problem with this film is that the lead character is Andy Garcia, it should not matter much but he is Cuban, i know and agree he is a good actor but this is a movie about Mexico. It should be an all around Mexican (Mexican American) cast. Eva Longoria is barely Mexican (more American which is ok). Come on, you would not put Vicente Fernandez , Antonio Aguilar, or Eric del Castillo as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin in a film about the American Revolution.

@MrNumber87 Yeah, I'm sure that's what the wanted to do. They wanted to take Mexico backwards, so to take it forwards the Secularist Govt just had to ruthlessly kill thousands of people. Great progress there, MrNumber. Again, if "progress" (as you define it) results in killing people because of beliefs they hold.... then that's certainly not any type of "progress" to speak of.
jorgekluney 5 months ago
@MrNumber87 They were ruthlessly killed for their faith - that makes them martyrs. There's nothing obvious about what you're saying. You make the claim that to hold religious belief is in contradiction to "reason" (again, as you define it) and I'm not in agreement with you at all. You keep saying "suppress the people" but that's what the secularlist govt did to the Mexican faithful. So, it's okay to suppress sometimes but only when "REASON!!" is the battle cry? You're inconsistent.
jorgekluney 5 months ago
@MrNumber87 So you drop one form of superstition for another? I mean this sincerely, you're a disturbing person. You seem to take joy in the fact that innocent were killed. You rationalize it by saying "but but but!! They lacked reason!!". However, you don't know that. You say it, but you don't know it. For someone in love with 'reason' (as you structure it) you seem quite unreasonable. You value the tool over the user of the tool - that's superstitious.
jorgekluney 5 months ago
@MrNumber87 Even if they were "against progress" (whatever is supposed to be entailed by "progress" as you use it).... that (being against "progress"), for you, is enough to warrant killing them? That's disturbing. If your high and mighty ideals of "Secularism" "Scientism" Rationalism" leads to killing innocent people in the name of "progress" then I can assure you - those ideals are nothing worth striving for. & I can further assure you, you will never reach the hearts and minds of people.

Huitzilipochtli1 6 months ago

Huitzilipochtli1 6 months ago
@macbenac100 the 'holy father' and bishops HAVE always ordered murders and massacres and other atrocities. YOU need to read your history before you make sweeping uneducated and bigoted comments. for starters look up THE SPANISH INQUISITION.

Have ALWAYS ???
You are a lier.
Go and learn History.
Your lies are incredible.
We do not deny there have been many erros, but when some one says they have been always done, then you are an hipocrit or a lier or just a parrot that repeats what listened from the tv or a magazine or a protestant.
Greetings.

Martin4Mary4Ever 4 months ago
