At that time, I was a 13 year old boy enjoying the summer about 40-50 miles from there in So. San Gabriel. I never knew this happened before now. I hope the wind was blowing the other way! Oh well, it is a little late for me to worry now.
Looks like Boeing can coast now with all the other reactor problems. Their sign offs are probably in their back pockets with Japan and the reactor in St Louis.
I'm sick, seeing this. Of course no one talks about it! I wonder if there is a bigger incidence of cancers in this area surrounding Santa Susanna in recent years? Tragic, just awful.
And there we have it: The AEC, now NRC - servant of the atomic industry. Remember them? In the 1970ies they advised their workers not to ask sceptic questions. Their whole concept baed upon the Rasmussen study - a heavily flawed study and criticised by the Union of Concerned Scientists. Atomic power plants were invented to produce Plutonium, never forget that people. That's their origin. They are totally new kind of violence - against their own people.
42 Disease Clusters In 13 U.S. States Identified huffpo
In 1991 DHS confirmed bladder cancers cluster closes to the Santa Susana
Field Laboratory (SSFL)
A study by the University of Michigan discovered a link to the site and the risk of thyroid cancer . It was "a notorious source of widespread radioactive and chemical contamination."
Toxic Substances cause it. There is contaminated soil and groundwater at the site.
the reactor "might" have created a problem...How is this a big deal? Should we all go apeshit over the fact an asteroid MIGHT hit us in the next 60,000 years? typical fear-mongering. Nuclear power is safe. the record speaks for itself. Zero deaths in 60 years, no statistical increases in cancer rates in the studies performed around TMI or Simi valley.
@crownedman104 Chernobyl was a test reactor designed for primarily producing weapons grade Uranium & Plutonium for the Soviet Weapons program, NOT energy. The Soviets KNEW the reactor design was unsafe, and the incident that took place was the result of unbelievable stupidity & incompetence. The death toll from Chernobyl was limited to the 40 who worked at the plant tirelessly to prevent the core meltdown. The subsequent release of radiation led to ZERO statistical increases in cancer.
@imacleod1977 wow, dumbass, the reactor was aleready melted down, hell the damn thing exploded. 40? omfg even the soviets said it was higher then that, and they were lieing like fuck
and yeah go look at a video about mutants of chernobyl mebbe no cancer but a hell alot worse u fuck get ur facts straight damn moron
@crownedman104 First off, learn English. "omfg", "ur", "mebbe" aren't a part of our language, stop corrupting it with your ignorant teenage bullshit. Secondly, calling someone a dumbass instead of debating them on FACT is a clear sign you have nothing intelligent to say, and are lacking the skills to say it even if you did...Cont'd
@crownedman104...Thirdly, according to the U.N. report on Chernobly, "...the death count from Chernobyl was 35 workers and firefighters, 15 cases of thyroid cancer and & estimated 4,000 cases of other cancers.."
Finally, the "mutations" videos you are referring to on Youtube are about as real as "Ghost Hunters" on SyFy Channel. It is COMPLETE photoshop fabrication. There is NO unusual "mutation rate" in Ukraine, post Chernobyl.
@imacleod1977 LMAO u rly dont know anything do you? srsly no mutation increase? next ull tell me that reactor didnt explode, it just danced
u obviously know nothing about radiation, u act as if its as harmless as the air we breath. if YOU were living around chernobyl, or had worked at it, ud have sense to stfu, but u can still go walk around wearing those lead suits the liquidators wore, go ahead, see how bad it is then asshole
@crownedman104 your arguments aren't backed up by peer-reviewed scientific data. The U.N. report showed the effects of Chernobyl, while serious, were nowhere NEAR as bad as you make it out to be. You cannot provide 1 peer-reviewed scientific source to back up your claims. As far as Radiation exposure goes, maybe you'd like to explain the Linear no-threshold vs. Radiation Hormesis models? Go Google them & read up on the Weak Nuclear Force. We'll all be waiting for you to cherry-pick a response..

@imacleod1977 exactly, protective gear, but they DO NOT GO WITHIN 30 FEET OF THE CORE!!!! like, how can u think radiation is harmless? isnt the idea of them needing protective gear, rad detectors and special training would give you a clue to it being harmless, yet u still appear to think that it is harmless, but i dont see YOU inside the sarcophagus. i see that you also refuse to acknowledge any of my points on how deadly it is. instead ur still demanding sites. obvious sign u know ur wrong
@crownedman104 "equivilant"?? I think you were just trying to spell "equivalent", little boy. It's not like you actually need a Dictionary or Thtesaurus on hand anymore. Most software will automatically spell-check your words. Try it.
@imacleod1977 and now i just gotta bring up this, The test procedure was to be repeated again in 1986, and it was scheduled to take place during the maintenance shutdown of Reactor Four. (from wikepedia)
was a reactor under a test, not a test reactor, ask any1 theyll say it was full on reactor. u srsly know nothing go stfu till u know real shit k
@crownedman104 Chernobyl are RBMK-1000 reactors. The primary function of this site was NOT to generate power, but to create fission byproducts for nuclear weapons. RBMK's
have a massive positive void coefficient combined with solid graphite as a neutron moderator, very short power cycles, and no containment dome to allowfore online refueling.
The Soviets KNEW this wasn't ideal for energy generation, but it allowed them to create alot of weapons grade materials quickly. Reactor 4 was a testbed.
@crownedman104 RBMK's expose U-235 & U-238 to very high neutron flux over a short period of time. This creates alot of Plutonium. The Soviets needed to constantly be creating new plutonium for their weapons program, b/c their bombs weren't as well designed as American ones & tended to break down quickly.
This is no secret. Look at what comes out of California. Actors who can't act, singers who can't sing, politicians who can't politic, musicians who can't make music, Caltech grads who think they're smart as MIT grads .... even though the CalKiddies struggle to even spell MIT. (Couldn't help myself on that one. I'm a Brass Rat. :) :) ) And the world-wide symbol for the state is a blond-haired surfer-dude whose every third word is "gnarly"..
Something's quite obviously affecting people there.
"No nuclear reactor is safe, because of the uncalculteable risks its just a matter of time before the next reactor accident happens" - Viktor Brjuchanow former director of Tchernobyl.
I'm from Scotland, but have close family living in Canoga Park, just down the road from the Boeing plant, was totally horrified to find out about this, my little bro even bought a giger counter! - why is this not more commonly known? - you can ask anyone in UK and they will have heard of 3 mile island, ask then about Simi valley meltdown and they scratch there heads...

Look at japan for crying out loud. They havent even had the melt down and look at the histeria its created. THIS MELTED DOWN! PEOPLE ARE LIVING IN THE FALLOUT WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE!
from about the beginning of the japan reactor crisis they partially melted down with #3 fully melting.. already happened buddy. buckle up, going to be an interesting year ;)
@aperfectfailyour there's no crazy government conspiracies going on...just a bunch of clueless people trying to do their menial tasks like typing up press releases and dressing them up so they don't sound horrible and cause widespread panic. The problem is they half ass it a lot of the time and no one wants to claim responsibility for anything, so no one talks about it. I can tell you this from experience because I work for the machine...its not organized enough to conspire.
Prime example, im at work (verizon wireless) and i just asked a random customer (shes 44)if she knew about he meltdown in simi valley, and she said "what meltdown" then i proceeded to show her this video, first thing she said was " I dont believe this (not shocked but litterally thinks its not true) her reason was that her father just so happened to work for rocketdyne and never told her anything of this... Just goes to show you how little my community to this day knows..
I live in thousand oaks california which is the city next door to simi valley (about 5 minutes distance)I think this is the biggest outrage ever, most people in simi valley, moorpark, and thousand oaks still have no idea that this ever happened, and most you tell it to, do not believe it until they have seen this video. Simi valley is a HUGE CITY now and moorpark is also expanding... It amazing how little the government cares about its people! WTF WHY ARE WE LIVING NEXT TO A FALLOUT SITe
further proof is, i recently moved to the waterstone appartments in moorpark and was told to never drink the tap water, they never disclosed why and after researching i found this is what is in the water, Radon 337.5 pCi/L 390 pCi/L(radioactive) breakdown product of uranium in soil, rock and water.. Radon is in the soil which gets into the water..
Thanks for posting this, I had no idea about it. Even though 240 millirems is a tiny amount, I feel bad for the techs that went in to do repairs and clean-up. Upsetting that the ARC covered this up for so long.
I remember in the seventies how the advocates for nuclear power assured everyone that explosions weren't possible because the fuel wasn't sufficiently enriched. The neglected to mention that the coolant was explosive. Sodium was a very very very bad idea. See also the Detroit reactor. In spite of all this stupidity, I think we need to build nuclear plants, but they should be out of government, not private, and modeled after successful operation is France and Germany.
Even if the fuel is enriched to 100%, nuclear explosion is not possible. The geometry of the core (rod vs sphere) and to attain a nuclear explosion, a slight sub critical mass needs to be made supercritical in a short amount of time...
However if the fuel is enriched to 100%, you would have 3 meltdowns per month...
240 times three mile islands release is still only 240 millirems (less than a x-ray tech gets in a day of work), natural background is about 100-120 millirems. It wasn't good by any means, but its unlikely that anyone living in the area today is going to be severely affected.
You're right. My dad (who's in aerospace) knows a lot of the old-timers who used to work here while it was a reactor, and they said that the entire nuclear structure (core containment, control center, etc.) was broken up and carted away. The workers who were there are unaffected, and while there is some cleanup still to be done, it is isolated from Simi Valley. People still work at the site today, and they too remain unaffected.
I'm sure stuff like this still happens... maybe we'll read about it when our kids are grown ups
