He`s playing a Viola Bass, to use a pick in that bass is almost a law. I play with fingers, but i hate the people who says that playing with pick isn't good, or it's gay. Try to get the sound of Chris Squire in a Rickenbaker with your fingers. That sound is unique, and it can't be made with fingers. Open you mind, there i's a lot of sounds you can't reach with fingers. If you were muscician, you'd understand.
@wannarockdahouse Actually, Paul McCartney, who popularized the "Viola bass" (it's a Hofner 500/1), didn't use a pick. Don't worry, I am a better musician and know more about music than you. :]
@JohnnyDHimself37 Wait... Paul McCartney DIDN'T use a PICK? Do you have EARS? He was a guitar player, and he turned to bass when the original bassist left. It was natural for him to play with a pick.
And just because u say "i'm a better musician", I have to believe you? Be careful, that kinf of ego's can bring you problems (:
I don't personally play with a pick all that often but you will be a limited play if your mind is closed to ANY techniques. If you can't make music with it its your fault, not the techniques.
Dirk never improved live, he was way too stuck up and didn't like doing it. That's why he couldn't come up with a cool "bass " version of Drive. Ben's a better bassist for the band now.
whoa i don't know about that, dirk loved to show his shit live, and he definately has some shit to show, he was way more technical than ben is, ben is more liad back and simple and thats what brandon and the band are looking for, so you are right about him beign the better bass player for the band NOW.
@Davisra simple is better. Just wanking around at 180 bpm is uninteresting for the audience. This solo actually carries a melody, rather than most of the horseshit that people like victor wooten do.
no offence.. but ur camera skill sux.. i was hopin to see ben playin his solo...

@sid009 oh, I know, even Brandon points at Ben, but the camera man never realises that, haha

it's not playing with a pick that is gay... it's pointing the camera to the singer and guitar player during a bass solo... :P
still... thanks for sharing the video!

saying playing with a pick is gay is like saying passive pickups are gay.
you just can't ... *sigh* it's pointless.

35TCK is damn correct. Dirk never improvises...
he was good, but Ben was more creative and more contributing to the sound of the band.

Ya and this person is damn correct saying I'm damn correct (ok enough of the ego trip. lol)

I like how people with cameras never give good bassists as much love as lead guitarists or vocalists. A travesty of sorts.

I've never heard so much cheering for a bass solo! :P
That said, typical mainstream music van, keeping the camera on the singer sipping water whilst the bass player is soloing, Hofner bass or not!

its a lakeland i think
