in the spring of 1990 the GD was a fine oiled machine That whole tour rocked,Brent got 3, yes 3 songs, one night in Albany.Brent was really startin' to kick ass(10 yrs in,I know)When Brent died that was the beginning of the end...he was irreplaceable as far as I'm concerned.Hornsby/Welnick well Brents leslie would have blown them out into the night...BRENT had SOUL Bro.....!
It definitely is Brent playing here, but I watched the entire clip and the Help/Slip that came before this and never did get a glimpse of Brent in these or the several other tunes from this source. Maybe there was an obstacle that was blocking him, I don't know. Anyway it was definitely not '91, and whoever was calling someone else a name over some trivial detail from twenty years ago, a piece of trivia for you: you put the apostrophe before the number of the year so as to take the 19's place.
This was my first Dead show ever. I wasn't even a huge fan of the band going in, but I was going out. The music, the crowd, the scene, all blew me away. I barely knew any of these songs, but it felt like I did, and I loved every one. Really get a copy of this show, it's amazing.
Whoever shot this actually was very skilled in that he used the camera well within its technical limitations. Thanks to all involved, especially the band.
I am completely confused, but thats baseline...What idiot is interested in listening to "high quality" video? I was only listening to great music and having a blast..From where I usually stood, you make them out, but you could hear the bells toll!!!
vid quality makes little difference to me. sound quality is what really matters and this is perfect. i never heard anyone complain about the "video quality" when we'd rip bowls and listen to GD vinyl's in a dark basement.
There's a new Dead Tribute band in New Orleans called Play Dead. Try typing in Franklin's, Feel Like A Stranger, Franklin's on youtube. There's only one Grateful Dead but I think Play Dead does a real nice job.
@SpottheLooney I think the video quality is actually quite good, with nice choices of when to cut to Phil and then back to Jerry. The sound quality is excellent. Thanks for posting. I guess GNRrocker is comparing the quality to all the great stuff he has contributed for other people's enjoyment.
This isnt from 90,this is second night of 91.My friend had a mailorder ticket and security would not let him in,I on the other hand had a counterfeit with running ink which was accepted.Goodtimes
@bluebarry44 This is most definitely NOT 91...se the guy sitting at the keys? Yea, that's Brent Mydland...he died in July of 90. Did you wear a white USC hat to the show you went to in 91?
@GNRrocker87 True, but it's the sound that matters. Went to lotsa shows, can't say that I "saw" too many of them as my eyes were closed much of the time.
89/90 shows were the bomb! Thanks so much for posting this. All other jam bands are just other jam bands. Spring tour 90 (still have the tank top I bought at Nassau) was Jerry/Brent at their peak. Who taped this? How big was the camera back then?
@Madman007 jerry willed the guitars back to the man who made them. the band took him to court claiming they belonged to the band. the maker won and he later sold them. one is owned by a guy here on j darks or something.
@Zendishwasher1 that is true acually there were 4 guitars built by doug irwin there was a huge legal battle he said all 4 were his and the band said that all 4 belonged to them so doug got to keep two (the tiger and wolf i beleve) they were sold at auction. theres vid on here of them being sold...also there was a few dead auctions in 07 and 08 another guitar owned and played by jerry was sold for 315,000 Jerry also had a few guitars made by steve cripe in in 90s im not sure what heppened to them
This has always been one of my favorites... you know what's hilarious...just found out that Jerry copped to stealing the progression from Lou Reed "Walk on the Wild Side". And the colored girls go...
Yep that's true. Doo da-doo da-doo. This is an example of the proper application of theft. No one would ever confuse this song for Walk on the Wild Side. It's a motif, reapplied in a totally different way. Contrast that to, say, Led Zep's theivery, which was blatant, and wholesale, and you see the difference. Compare Zep "Whole Lotta Love" to Small Faces "You Need Lovin". Zep stole the song credit from W. Dixon and the vocal interpretation from Steve Marriott. Judicious theft has its place, tho.
Kinda like "Smells like teen spirit" is a cop of "More than a Feeling" and "Misunderstanding" (in 12/8) steals the bass lick directly from "Hot fun in the Summertime."
That's what music is - like an ever-evolving cosmic recipe with some mighty tasty reslts. : D
You had to see it live to get it... I never did till I went and once I did I went as many times as I could....first show was in Chicago at Soldier Field and if you have never seen 65000 people all get up and start dancing and not stop for 3 hours you have not lived.....instant Karma and friendship on levels not seen at any other place on earth......
man.. Jerry still brings tears to my eyes. RIP. I remember spinning so fast during a help-slip-franklin that the roundness of the sky compressed and was flat and I could see in all 360 degrees of direction at once. if you get confused...
This is sweet. I saw most of the sping tour this year and all the Summer tour in 90' excetp Chicago = EVERY show was smokin hot ridiculous amazing - people were at a fever pitch for tix. i was gettin' crazy - The hottest time ever in my opinion
great sound quality
