Yes, Robben is one of the premier modern blues players, but I think he broke some barriers with guitar in the jazz world. I feel that he dominated the notion that horns were the lead instrument.
He was great in the Yellowjacket days, but I'm not sure I'd say he's not as good now. Different type of music for sure: jazz fusion then vs. blues now. He's still the best blues guitarist around... the EJ of the west coast.
@jdumoit77 With respect, I'd disagree. I think Robben went to jazz for some challenging reasons - am I able to play jazz? that's cool, I have to play some jazz. He proved for us that he could stand up and play with the Brecker Brothers, Miles Davis, George Benson or with anybody. But look at him now: he's now truly playing what comes from his heart, with his own sound and take! No compromises, just Robben's own music, and he's so happy on these vids :)
@homolad shit out the guitar, he'd just realized that isn't the point of true art, but to give yourself. And to be honest Robben is so so so much more than a blues guitarist, just listen to the wicked solo of this song - not even the progression is bluesy just the feel - it's crazy, perfect and you can tell after two notes, with your eyes shut that it's Robben playing. Just by that, Robban is in the eternal hall of fame of the guitar!
@jdumoit77: i don't know what to think of his solo work since i first heard what he did on the Yellowjackets first record (a favourite). i was not found of his solo work but i was favorably surprised when i listened to the "Supernatural" album. His best solo work by far according to me. And he sings better and better too.
One of the best guitar player.

He was much better with the Yellow Jackets.
Check out his solo record from 1979, "The Inside Story", truly a masterpiece.
