Personally, I like both of the new desktops (unity and gnome shell), they are a step in at least a different direction, in making the linux desktop more intuitive and productive. But It's ridiculous that we have two projects that are almost exactly the same: Unity and Gnome shell are basically the same idea, and I think they need to merge NOW.
Wow. This is simply amazingly stupid imo. I find that this kind of user interface is much like iOS' and other OS for tablets and mobile devices... Are we all supposed to move from our good desktops to tablets and mobile devices? I'm more of a game/high speed and graphical/general performance guy. Thumbs up if you agree.
Yeah, each time i like to give a focus to the window I need to click on the panel, wait a while fore this (eye candy) wall and click a the thumnbail of my window? LOL...
I think from this point that Ubuntu will raise or fail bad , there is no another option... Lot of ppl dont like gnome 3.0 and some of them do. Cannonical will try to make their own style OS and to be maybe more like osx. They have to make some big changes to get piece of cake and some radical... I think they going to focuse more on word Ubuntu then on linux ... Good luck cannonical and ubuntu wish u all luck!!!
Gnome is wrecked beyond sanity now, bloat bullshit ware with no context driven UI logics anymore. The task load index is vary high for this hence bullshit... bleh i dont regret i leave this crap
yes you need compositing.. live CDs will most likely not enable some animations by default, but give you a minimal interface so you're able to install the system
@bikutorusan meh, I always keep the animations and all that off, it just takes longer and doesn't benefit you in any way if you're trying to do something.
@bikutorusan Yes it is, but only if you take some distribution that offers the proprietary graphics drivers in the LiveCD, there are some on Ubuntu basis.
's probably because the demonstration was done a bit fast, plus you were not performing the actions but just riding along. I use the Scale plugin in Compiz a lot, and it has similar zoom-y effects but they're comfortable if you don't abuse them :)
This just looks like a glorified Compiz Cube....L A M E.

I have the resources to handle this.
I'm cool with it.
Also, this is gnomeshell, not gnome.
I run gnome at 214mb of total system ram usage nowadays.

Is compositing needed for these effects or will it be possible to get the same experience on, say, a live CD without graphical drivers installed?

I'd say that's true of _most_ animations, yeah.

So pretty much what is going on is that stuff from Compiz is being re-invented in GNOME? Not made here syndrome, I guess...
