  • The 2600 is classic but the 5200 is actually better, only flaws were it's size, the A/C adapter (even though adapters suck period), the weird box thing you plug the cables into, and the does not work unless you fix it yourself controller. Basically I prefer the 5200 controller for games like breakout instead if using those stupid knob controllers for the 2600 version

  • This game plays best with the 5200 Trak-Ball Controller.

  • The Controllers actually work!!?

  • There seems to be some glitches. At around 1:35 the ball passes between two bricks and hits one that it normally should not have had access to.

  • I once witnessed in the cavity version, that if you release all the balls into the top of the screen, the computer could not kep up with the scoring as multiple balls broke the bricks.

  • Great review, just a shame some of the game footage used is from old video tapes.

  • the 80's where so cool ;(.

  • AVGN lied! This console DOES work!

  • The only way to play Breakout or Kaboom is with a paddle. Luckily, I bought a prototype years ago from a former Atari employee. Go to biffsgamingvideos on youtube to see this controller prototype and Atari reviews.

  • The black void is in your heart, Mark!

  • dam man.. good post, i was in tha 1st grade when i got this game.. Always wanted to see some of the old 5200 games.. sents i cant get my 5200 to work.. boy we came a long way

  • Was there any Tetris or puzzle type games?

  • I prefer Arkanoid, because it's got a load of fun power-ups.

  • why not just compare pong to supe rmario brothers, asshole?

  • y r u being a fucker

  • Arkanoid and Super Breakout are similar games, undeniably. Breakout takes the pure, simple approach (mostly) while Arkanoid ramps up the sillyness with crazy weapons.

I feel justified in comparing the two, especially since I just made a brief, thought-out point.

You on the other hand lashed out with a 12 year old's insult for no apparent reason. Who's the bigger "asshole"?

  • @Tryzon i bet you don't even wipe, dirty ass!

  • @dustyatari That's even less appropriate an insult than before. Could you at least attempt to make some semblence of sense? Try to apply your insults to the situation, eh?

  • SMB and pong aren't similar enough to compare.

  • @DoitForTheLolz1 that's what your mom said LAST NIGHT!

  • @dustyatari captain idiocy is quite idiotic when he speaks idiotically.

  • first atari game i ever played

  • @cuuuuue ur mom was the first atari game i ever played

  • Is that the ingame music? If so, it had quite good music.

  • No, the music was added to keep it from being boring. Music of such quality is far beyond what the systems of the time could produce.

  • Myeah, in retrospect I suppose I should have seen (or heard) that. Oh well.

  • Whats that song....?

  • alright but serously is this a good game man how long would you play this 2mins

  • Whats the story on that game? is it like GTA or fallout. lol

  • wtf games dont need a story you n00b

  • Yes they do you "n00b"

    >:(

  • The 'lol' normally indicates humour or sarcasm in our society. Your the n00b, 'triforcehunter161'

  • I love that the original owner's high scores are in there! That's so cool!

  • COOL

  • I got this game for the 2600, I like the paddle controller games cause you can control the game with one hand and drink a beer with the other, it just takes practice to move the wheel acurately with your thumb.

  • Can anyone give me the name of the song?

  • I have the computer version of this game.

    Very additing. Liek coccaine.

  • a timeless classic thats still awesome to play.

  • This is one of the longest versions of the intro music I have ever heard.

I am still looking for the song. :p

  • the music cant compare to 2600

  • "Me - Don't Know - 870." lol It's like he forgot to write down the date that day and then came back to it later and couldn't remember the day he got 870.

That's pretty funny. Nice review, Mark.

  • who would of thought bouncing a ball against a wall of bricks would be fun

  • superman lol shmuc: Man

  • It's funny to think that those highscores are over 25 years old!

  • ur screens alittle dodgy

  • The spacesuit guy (from the 2600 version) was not available to model for the 5200 artwork.

  • CGR, do you have gametap? Theres lots of old games on that! Just thought you might be interested.

  • lol im pretty sure he does read them, cos i kept nagging him about a review for a game and he replied with a dif account

  • Some of the high scores say "mom"

  • I wonder if he ever comes on here and reads our comments?

  • I would think so since i saw complaints about the bad picture quality on his last 5200 review, and he ow brought it up.

  • I think the 2600 version has alot better sound effects.

  • Nice review!

  • 2600 version also had odd sounds when you break the bricks.

  • I always liked the 2600 game Circus Atari. It was where you had two clowns on a see-saw and you broke balloons. That was my favorite of the breakout style games.

  • Nice review, I hope to see a hardware review of the 5200 and it's controllers sometime in the future.

  • I like the stock music for this one!

  • Arkanoid will be coming to the Live Arcade soon.

  • And playing it with the 360 controls will be like playing Super Breakout with the 5200 controls.

  • Anyone else noticed the strange behavior of the ball in certain situations? It slips through blocks where i think it shouldn't. For instance at 1:34 where the orange block get canceld, look at the angle the ball takes..hmm

    Nice review nevertheless.

  • I think this is because the way it was programed, the ball can only "hit" a brick from the bottom or top, not from the side.

  • Has he done MGS4 For ps3? Just got it and its amazing.

  • Better than that.

  • U BARELY GOT IT???? its been like year man get with the new games man

  • LOL @ the scores in the manual.

I didn't know people actually wrote in them.

    Gotta love '83. :)

  • doesn't the 7800 version use

    a paddle controller?

  • There is no 7800 version of this game.

But if there was, then yes it could use the paddles.

  • DO a review of Golden axe for the sega genises.

  • I think he already did.

  • I like the part were you bounce the ball and make it hit the colored squares lol.

  • didn't it come with this game?

  • arrr yes, breakout =)

  • the 5200 does have paddle controllers. They're just extremely rare. Only a few sets are known to exist.

  • 3:48

  • CLASSIC

  • who here votes for a review of F-ZERO on

    SNES next?

  • what about Skies of Arcadia for DreamCast ?

  • I vote for a F-ZERO review.

  • Him and Super Nintendo games don't mix unfortunatly :(((((

  • i do

  • HD always comes a bit later. Come back later in an hour or so and there should be a HD option

  • Mark, have you played Bit.Trip. Beat on the WiiWare?

If you love these types of games it's worth check out.

  • It will be soon.

  • I have seen the controller, and I feel your pain.

  • hang on impatient one

  • all awesome

  • awesome review for an awesome game
