I wish I could have Harley Race's suitcase full of $25,000.00. It would help me with my financial woes. But it sure led up to one of the most memorable Starrcade cards in pro wrestling history between Ric Flair and Harley Race.
What made Harley such a great champ is that almost every promo you saw of him he'd put the belt over. The belt was the most important thing in his life. It's what every man wants to hold above all else. He was so great at making the belt seem like it really was the most important thing in the world of sports. Even when Flair lost it to Dusty you saw Ric scream in the back "I'm nothing! I'm nothing!" The belt mattered.
Now you don't know who's champion and the belt spins around like a toy.
@megamanmaniac In March 1984, he beat Flair for the belt in Wellington, New Zealand. 2 nights later, Flair won it back in Kallang, Singapore. This change was not approved of by the NWA. They finally acknowledged in 1996, though.
Mr Race one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I've talked to him a few times and got my pic taken with him. They did the same thing a few years back when HHH put a hit on Goldburg or however you spell his name lol.
@MissLegacy20 Randy Orton reminds me so much of Harley Race in terms of their promos. They both have that slow almost silent to the point promo style and only yell when they have to. Randy no doubt was inspired by Harley since they both did the spitting angle in 03 and they both are from St. Louis. Randy Orton is the closest thing to a old-school heel we have today. He's one of the only few wrestlers today that would have been a success in the territory days in the 70's and 80's.
Harley was a master at mic work. Nothing back then was scripted as with WWE where it is literally written down. The bookers gave you their plot line, and you went with it from there. You sat down with whom ever you were working the angle with and talked things over, but it was pretty much ad libbed all the way.

Harley Race is a legend in the truest sense of the word. Besides his tough and rugged style in the ring, his constipated, "I-just-swallowed-a-box-of-nails" voice was perfect for his character.
I agree! His, what I call, "gurgley" voice, matched his ambition, drive, direction, and purpose! Unfortunately, GONE are promos like THIS one. In my opinion, all that's left are, unfortunately, so-called "wrestlers" in the ring doing "stand-up."
From what I have heard, he injured his throat badly during a match and that was his actual speaking voice for some years. Eventually, it healed somewhat, and his voice improved.
Actually, Race won the NWA World Title one more time in New Zealand I believe in 1984 during a tour but dropped it back to Flair while on tour. The NWA did not recognize the switch until many years later.
I have the first Ric Flair DVD and I watched this promo and the whole angle and all I can say is "DAMN!"
Course then WWE used the same angle basically and revamped it for HHH/Goldberg cos they couldn't be creative with a way to do anything else. The difference is with this story someone ELSE actually collects the money and the HHH/Goldberg mess had HHH do his own work

When the presidential candidates were on RAW last year, I got the idea that Hillary should have done a variation on this. She would be offering a cool million to anyone who could eliminate Obama from the campaign ("Alan Keyes: Obama beat you for U.S. Senate, you can do it!"). She would have done a great job. I knew Sting started his career in the UWF(he teamed with the Ultimate Warrior at some point in the UWF), but I wasn't sure whether he was a heel. To me, Sting doesn't look right as a heel because he had been a face for almost 20 years(1988-2008). EVERY other popular wrestler went back and forth between heel and face. Ricky Steamboat may have been a face for his just about his entire career just like Sting.

Yes, the NWO was great, until they added way too many members and way too many glorified jobbers like Vincent and Horace Hogan. Not all heel stables really worked though, remember Savio Vega's group after he got kicked out of the Nation (Los Boricuas or whatever it's spelled) hardly a great heel stable.

The WWF went old school when they had Chris Jericho "punch" Shawn Michaels real-life wife. Involving real-life family members is an effective way to put over someone as a heel. This Harley Race video illustrates how to put over a heel.

What made Harley such a great champ is that almost every promo you saw of him he'd put the belt over. The belt was the most important thing in his life. It's what every man wants to hold above all else. He was so great at making the belt seem like it really was the most important thing in the world of sports. Even when Flair lost it to Dusty you saw Ric scream in the back "I'm nothing! I'm nothing!" The belt mattered.
Now you don't know who's champion and the belt spins around like a toy.

@MissLegacy20 Randy Orton reminds me so much of Harley Race in terms of their promos. They both have that slow almost silent to the point promo style and only yell when they have to. Randy no doubt was inspired by Harley since they both did the spitting angle in 03 and they both are from St. Louis. Randy Orton is the closest thing to a old-school heel we have today. He's one of the only few wrestlers today that would have been a success in the territory days in the 70's and 80's.

Harley was a master at mic work. Nothing back then was scripted as with WWE where it is literally written down. The bookers gave you their plot line, and you went with it from there. You sat down with whom ever you were working the angle with and talked things over, but it was pretty much ad libbed all the way.

From what I have heard, he injured his throat badly during a match and that was his actual speaking voice for some years. Eventually, it healed somewhat, and his voice improved.

Actually, Race won the NWA World Title one more time in New Zealand I believe in 1984 during a tour but dropped it back to Flair while on tour. The NWA did not recognize the switch until many years later.

I have the first Ric Flair DVD and I watched this promo and the whole angle and all I can say is "DAMN!"
Course then WWE used the same angle basically and revamped it for HHH/Goldberg cos they couldn't be creative with a way to do anything else. The difference is with this story someone ELSE actually collects the money and the HHH/Goldberg mess had HHH do his own work

I knew Sting started his career in the UWF(he teamed with the Ultimate Warrior at some point in the UWF), but I wasn't sure whether he was a heel. To me, Sting doesn't look right as a heel because he had been a face for almost 20 years(1988-2008). EVERY other popular wrestler went back and forth between heel and face. Ricky Steamboat may have been a face for his just about his entire career just like Sting.

what's up mexizona, that constant about the war games is so true. The crowd would always count down the seconds until the face could enter the war games and even up things with the heels(the 4 Horseman on most occassions). The face would get a HUGE pop from the crowd when he entered the war games.
Another constant would be Ricky Morton getting squashed by the Heel tag team for most of the match and then making the HOT TAG to Robert Gibson!!

I wrote that about Kevin Nash because he was playing RIDICULOUS characters like Vinny Vegas and Oz in WCW. When he associated with Shawn Michaels and became his bodyguard(Deisel), he got a push that elevated him to main event status. I'm sure S.Michaels told Vince to give him a push as a main-eventer.
I'm not surprised that the KLIQ would pull FAGGOT moves like that. That must be HELL to work in a place where some BITCHES can run to the boss and screw you. It happens in a LOT of workplaces!!

torrie is dating nick mitchell, living in houston. no, francine and douglas just stood each other, did not like each other personaly. bret has already been divorced two times, his first wife left him with his kids and his second wife he left because she wanted him to move it italy, she was italian. tammy was drunk when she went after bret at a reunion show. i have very little info on the hart/kim relationship.

I heard Brett Hart interviewed on the radio earlier today, he mentioned he would be putting out a book. The most interesting comment he made was that the WWF HAD NO INVOLVEMENT IN PRODUCTION OF THE BOOK!! I guess that was a SHOT at Mick Foley, Edge, Chyna, the Rock, and others who had their "factual" books distributed by the WWF.

Having a stable of HEEL wrestlers has always worked in wrestling(NWO, Heenan Family, 4 Horseman, Russians). Vince McMahon probably wouldn't allow a heel group unless his SON-IN-LAW Triple H was involved!! Remember, he led Evolution, a cheap imitation of the Horseman.
You mentioned a SHOOT HEEL. Triple H is a SHOOT FACE, he always makes shoot/non-kayfabe comments. Remember, when Jeff Hardy mentioned the Kliq and having the "right family members" to push Triple H?? Shawn Michaels also did that.

i planed this, i say, have K.O.D. 5 invade WWE, beat up everybody, have bodies all over the ring, beat upo women, beat up camera men, beat up planted fans, become the most ruthless stable in wrestling history.
triple h thinks he's a shoot, he's too big for himself because he has too much power, i was watching the mcmahon dvd and i just wanted to puke, about 85% of that dvd was either a lie or a work. we need honky tonk man to do a dvd and name off everybody he knows and tell all about them.

I'm not surprised that Vince McMahon would LIE on his own DVD. It's too bad that wrestling MARKS(a lot of young kids) bought into V.McMahon's NONSENSE and didn't support ECW. V.McMahon pretty much owns all the quality wrestling video(ECW, AWA, NWA, WCW) and he can DISTORT wrestling history because he has a monopoly and nobody will tell the truth because they want jobs!!
You're right about Triple H being too big for himself. He is acting just like Shawn Michaels did in the mid to late 90's.

Yes, the NWO was great, until they added way too many members and way too many glorified jobbers like Vincent and Horace Hogan. Not all heel stables really worked though, remember Savio Vega's group after he got kicked out of the Nation (Los Boricuas or whatever it's spelled) hardly a great heel stable.

K.O.D. 5 would stay to just 5 members, that was the problem with the NWO, it included 50 wrestlers, when it should have been 6-7 wrestlers. they had it right at first, like when the nasty boys went to join the NWO or when the booty man tried to join the NWO, they beat them down instead. we need a stable that controls everything, the belts, the women, the money, the power, everything. so then people would pay to see that stable, especially the leader, get their ass kicked.

Another problem with heels is that the WWF is constantly switching wrestlers from heels to babyfaces. How many times have guys like Chris Jericho, Big Show, and Triple H switched between heel and face? That's why I refer to it as VINCE MCMAHON'S CARTOON!!
The WWF went old school when they had Chris Jericho "punch" Shawn Michaels real-life wife. Involving real-life family members is an effective way to put over someone as a heel. This Harley Race video illustrates how to put over a heel.

excatly, if i played heel, i,d love to be the power abusing heel, you know, i thought of a stable called "kiss of death 5". i got the name from tom brandi, have 5 different wreslters, the leader(a Chameleon wrestler),the shooter,the big man,the cruiserweight and the brawler, atempt to take over WWE. WWE don't have any super heels, that's what kod 5 would be, a super heel, where both the faces and the heels hate them, simular to the NWO. kod 5 would have the money,women,power,everything.

I know Larry Zbysko was a great wrestler and played a HEEL very well, I was just surprised to hear that he was married to Verne Gagne's daughter. L.Zbysko would sometimes insult his ex-wife during interviews in the AWA and NWA, I assume he was referring to Gagne's daughter??
Whatever happened to Trish, Stacey Keibler, Dawn Marie(didn't another wrestler impregnate her), Melina(with her 3-way), Krystal, and Tammy Sytch aka Sunny?? Did any of them take the MAJOR GUNS-route and do porn??

trish retired to marry her long time husband, stacy is a c-list actress, dawn marie was not inpregnated by simon diamond, just was married to him, some new jersey state trooper she was dating after they got divorced inpregnated her. krystal left wwe with bobby lashley, and tammy sytch is working legends reunions, trying to get bret hart to f*ck her. terri runnels should of went into porn, she has the body and the face for it, but she says it would affect her daughter, which i don't believe.

ALL of the divas mentioned needed to get into porn. Terri Runnels and Tammy Sytch may be too old to be involved in porn at this point. HA! HA! All these "ladies" performed SOFT-CORE PORN on almost every TV appearance they made. T.Runnels didn't seem too concerned with her daughter when her she went along with Dustin Runnels FAG gimmick(GOLDUST). That WWF must have given him that gimmick as a way to embarass Dusty Rhodes.

terri runnels is never too old for porn, that woman bathes in the fountain of youth, seeing her with dale dabone or peter north might be worth my money. terri always seems to use her daughter as a excuse, i mean, it's her body, but it's also her loss. missy hyatt is a rat, plain and simple. i can't stand kelly kelly and candice michelle, those two don't belong in wrestling along with maria. hell, i only like victoria and jillian hall. because both can wrestle and are being held back by wwe.

Triple H comes across as VERY arrogant, just like Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, X-Pac, and Shawn Michaels(years back). Gee, you'd think those guys were like some kind of KLIQ!! Hogan wasn't married to the boss's daughter, so he couldn't have been as bad as Triple H

I'm not surprised that a "lady" of professional wrestling got passed around from wrestler to wrestler, but father to son is just disgusting. HA! HA! I remember when Terri Runnels was Alexandra York, she had the SARAH PALIN look!! Nancy Benoit was also doing that gimmick before she turned heel on Rick Steiner.
I'm surprised that Dustin Runnels was invovled in creating the Goldust gimmick. The GAY gimmick seems like something given to wrestlers that Vince McMahon wanted to punish.

This is some good stuff. I'm not suprised that the WWE Divas get treated like WHORES!! I mean they sexually degrade themselves on TV every week, it should be easy for them to do it behind closed doors.
Wasn't Bobby Lashley going with Krystal, both of them left the WWF at the same time. What was behind that. Also with the way things worked out with Debra McMichael-Steve Austin, Kevin Sullivan-Nancy Benoit, and Chris Benoit-Nancy Benoit, someone may want to WARN the divas about the wrestlers!!!

i don't understand why some WWE divas don't get into porn, you make a little more money and your fucking hung guys. some of them are ugly, but your geting paid to "put them over". i least i respect tylene buck, she's in porn and is doing a great job at it. i don't know why traci brooks is so loyal to TNA, all they do is treat her like trash, you'd think she would get smart and leave that sinking ship, hell, ROH would treat her alot better than TNA. she is such a great talent in my mind.

It's too bad that the WWF used Harley Race to put over Randy Orton as the "legend killer." They had R.Orton spit in the face of Harley Race a few years back.

on randy orton, he should have been fired three years ago when he did what he did to rochelle loewen, he was mad she would not sleep with him, so he messed up her personal belongings. i feel the boys can be quite sexist at times, but then again, this is a man's business. you have to pay your dues. i,m sure trish stratus "payed her dues" if you know what i mean, lol. which is why she won't pose in playboy. "i don't want to be remembered that way" she says. what other way would we think of her???
