Marha Jean words cannot say what she meant to me and the Detroit area I can remmeber this song as a kid on my grandmother Hi-Fi in the early 70's, as a teenager in the 80, and then I started listing to this song on my way to work in my 30's, until her passing.
Just sitting here listening to this song brings me back to days past. I want someone to actually put up a recording of her, she was amazing! Am I the only one who remembers her saying the 91 Psalm??? I learned the whole thing listening to her.
I think Martha Jean the Queen made this song famous. I had gotten a 45 of this song. I think I played it so much the record almost disappeared. Love it! Thanks Ditto.
A Detroiter now in Atlanta (since 1973), I got to like the classic radio personalities of Zilla Mays, Leonard "Tippy" Calloway, and the early morning show on WAOK called "Break-a-Day Gospel" hosted by Brother Esmond Patterson. All three of them passed away (may they rest in peace).
I have heard this song so many times on WCHB and WJLB in Detroit. I cannot find this song on any of his record albums of his greatest hits. Martha Jean, the Queen played it at 12 Noon (on WJLB). I remember her segment called "Buzz the Fuzz" when police officers would all in and talk to callers. Before noon on WCHB, Kim Weston would sing, "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing."

I am also a true Detroiter at heart and my mother used to listen to this song on the background of Martha Jean's radio show. I remember being a little girl, of course not knowing what these songs meant, but I knew it had something to do with gospel and church music and Martha Jean's voice would be bellowing along doing her show and my mother would have the radio tuned up listening happily to it. What good memories they were! True Detroit memories.

I have always loved this song. Yes the first time I heard this song was on Martha Jean the Queen's radio show in Detroit. When you had something pressing on your mind, this was the one song to sit and listen too. Thank you Mr Cleveland.
@ceciliafrank1 Me too! Ditto!! I was a little kid then and I use to sing the soprano part with the ladies.and try to sound like Rev.Cleveland on the part, "A day would never end". Lol! Those were the days! :)
I am speechless...The tears are just flowing, I haven't heard this song in probably 40 or so years. I remember my mom playing this record when I was a little girl, She went home to be with Jesus this past August. This is such a great blessing to me. it brings back the most wonderful memories. Thank you, The blessings of God be multiplied to you.
I will FOREVER be grateful for Philadelphia's WDAS AM Louise Williams... Rev. Louise Williams became a chapter in our family's history of treasured memories... Every Sunday Morning.getting ready for Sunday School (Mandatory) Louise Williams Gospel on the radio in the kitchen while our mother got us ready for church.. WoW! I surely remember this song.....Thanks for the memories and posting
Thank you for posting...You know when you've grown up listening to a song each weekday at noon, you have a need to hear it again. It always seemed as if the city became quiet ,still & at peace when this song came on WJLB. Detroit station WCHB play the national black anthiem "Life Every Voice and Sing" at that same moment. Anyway it went, we were surrounded with love, support & solidarity here in Detroit. There is a lesson in all of this Detroit. Thank You Ms Martha Jean the Queen for the love.

in the late nineties, as i was driving to work, i tuned into marthas' program in detroit. it's intro song was this one. i was very impressed by this tune and became relaxed, even though the thought of work vexed my soul. martha and that song made my day. as a windsorite, i salute their memory.
I remember this song well. Back in the 70's radio station WADO in NYC used this at the close of the Sunday broadcast day. The last thing they played efore they signed off. Any New Yorker remember Eleanor Morris???
Thank you for posting this song. I can not stop playing it. It brings back so many memories of my childhood in Detroit. I remember Martha Jean responding to the lyrics saying, "really you don't need to know, only believe"........
Thank you so much for this song I listen to it everyday going to work on Martha Jean the Queen and everyday I had tears in my eyes it was so comforting for me. I have tears in my eyes now. My favorite song. THANK YOU pt-detroit,michigan

Not sad tears but tears of happiness. I HAVEN'T HEARD IT IN YEARS.THANK U YOUTUBE 4 KEEPIN DIZ SONG ALIVE.

I heard this every Sunday morning as my Dad drove the family to church, I was thirteen at the time. I am now almost sixty and things have changed a bit. Rev. James and Dad are gone, the church is no more... but it surely wonderful to know this song has endured time and is still available for me to hear. Thanks
I also am a Detroiter, grew up listening to this when Martha Jean's program came on at 12:00noon...but do ya'll know Frank Sinatra originally recorded this in the 40's?
@alyciacole I had no idea. I also grew up in Detroit and remember Martha Jean the queen playing this song everyday. Then after she went off the air, Pastor James Beal would come on the air. He had this wonderful Speaking voice. Martha was something. She'd get on the air in the mornins and come Profit sharing time for factory workers, she'd tell all the women, "Child, today is Profit sharing check day. Don't let that man lie to you about that money." LOL! I miss the old WJLB am.
I also grew up in Detroit and remember Marth Jean The Queen ! playing this song at 12:00p.m.noon every weekday! She would talk through it ! God I miss those days !Thanks a million! for posting this song ! Now I will listen to it every week !
Bro I've listen to this song almost evey week since you posted it man!!! This song is beyond words..So fitting. James sure could and still can just take you IN!!!
Glorious. I had the pleasure of seeing Rev. Cleveland perform this in concert co-led at the time with his protege young Clyde Brown. To hear two great voices blended singing this classic was absolutely a 5 star ***** experience. Brown sounded so much like James that when they sung together one had to look to tell the difference. Truly, truly unforgettable. Glad I had the pleasure of meeting both of these two greats.
thank you for posting this. they have such honest voices. there are so many bad versions of one of the most beautiful of songs. it has to have a blues feel to work, though. james cleveland is great.
"He Leadeth Me" This is an awesome rendition by Sir Rev James Cleveland, and the Cleveland Singers. Brother Cleveland was indeed a unique individual. His music and style has never been duplicated. This song has, as well as many other songs he did, have truly blessed my heart.
Me too saintlouis!! I grew up in Detroit listening to Martha Jean play "Without A Song", at 12:00 p.m. ... "It's praying time", on WCHB!! Remember?? Man, this takes me back ... fond, cherished memories!
Thank you JayEm, for blessing us who have been "Without A Song" for SO long. May the Lord continue to keep & bless you!
You may have to pry my arms from around you because I am sending you and yours a great big God- filled hugggg for posting this song. Where, where, can I find this song! My God you have no idea how the lyrics to this song brought me closer to God when I was in my milking stage of seeking the Lord! This song was my first steak dinner if you know what I mean (smile) Thank you
Wow!!..I have not heard this song in years...more than 20...it was on the first album that i ever purchased back in the 1970's..It was one of the K-tel deals.(stlouis market)..James Cleveland greatest hits...lots of old old songs...they dont write them like that anymore...listen to the harmony...absolutely angelic..thank you for posting this..i agree, it should be reissued
Everybody dead except Clyde? Can you find when he sang the lead on another James Cleveland great tune called "Trouble?" There are times when Clyde sounded exactly like James. Their collaboration was brilliant. I think Clyde leads several early songs when they were with Savoy. The jacket cover shows them all wearing a beautiful silver lame jacket. Thanks!
I believe that i have the same album...it was actually the first album tht i had ever bought...i bought off TV...K-Tel ...i think...i will have to look for it...it is truly priceless
I have this song from a few people; Mahalia Jackson, CLara Ward, Eddie Williams, and a couple of others. It's really nice hearing James Cleveland's recording also.
