Pledge to switch away from Big Telecom! Big phone and cable companies have made record profits while they overcharge and disrespect Canadians. Those profits are then used to lobby for more control and price-gouging.
It’s not possible for everyone to switch to an independent services right now, but let’s all pledge to do so when it is possible. Make a pledge and spread the word!
This just got worse. And whats even worse then worse is that people are oblivious to this, they use Facebook twitter youtube without realizing they are supporting media tyrants. Fight the power!
Ever easier. Say no to the greedy media giants and do what I've done. use a local ISP. I"ll NEVER use Rogers or Bell internet. their bandwidth caps are already rediculous. I use Start Communications, the best customer service I;ve encountered, though not 24/7. I've been with them since 28.8 dial-up was the norm for residential, and I have no intention of changing.
I'm seeking refugee status in some other country if this goes through, because as a young Canadian a good deal of my CULTURE is online. If this goes through they will be denying me access to my cultural rights, and thus will seek a country that will give me my freedoms accordingly.
@JazzDragon022 Actually, seems to be canada grovels easilly to cultural arguments such as the rights of jews, or muslims, you may yet have a very good case if you can rally people to your cultural cause :D
in other words, the isps found a way to milk and starve their costumers without having any competitors winning over their costumers. This is like having a one giant bread manufacturer that will put 100 bucks on 1 loaf of bread and there is no way to buy the bread from other companies. If they wanted to make their contracts "fair" people who would "underuse" the internet should been awarded and saved more money. Or at least transferred the unused bandwidth to the time they overused it.
Also, we'll soon find out if Tony Clement will stand behind his intentions to crush UBB or not. He's one of the few politicians out there who truly understands technology and its importance.
This is an AWESOME video! But...don't give up the good fight, too much is at stake! This is still far from over! UBB is now known as AVP (Aggreated Volume Pricing), CRTC will render their 'verdict' on the issue near the end of summer. Don't let up the pressure, and PLEASE be aware of WHOM you vote for in the election May 2nd!
This will definitely IMPACT the CRTC's Final descision due on July 29, 2011. Educate everyone you come into contact with NOW!
seriously, why are we paying 60bucks a month for a internet with a 60gig cap in canada while others get 250gig-unlimited and faster internet in other countries for sub 30? greedy corporate fucks.
This video is well-done! Nothing here is untruthful. However, once Canadian ISPs adopt unlimited bandwith connectivity (like they do in Britian, Western, Eastern Europe), they will impose FUPs (Fair Usage Policies) on the customer (end-user). Say, you go above x GBs you will face a throttle. WIND proposes this on their data plans (just like they do in the EU). Regardless of the possible consequences of getting Unlimited Internets, this is a step in the right direction!
Corporate collusion with govt is the problem here. Big corps want to limit competition from smaller entrepreneurial cos. The more govt control there is in a market, the more power is available to big corps via bribing politicians. Real freedom means less regulation, so big corps can buy less favor. UBB is not the problem. Govt collusion with big corps is.
@keesjan1234 UBB "only" makes billing more transparent? Really? I am paying for access to content ISPs do not create, basically I pay for speed / second access, NOT for CONTENT which ISP have nothing to do with. If they can't afford to offer the service, then they shouldn't offer it. It is ludicrous to pay for access AND use of on top of it. This stifles technology and content creativity / innovation because it limits access, i.e. there is no market. Despicable!
Bottom line: The UBB is there because the fat cats want their aging, outdated business model to keep on going while the internet is constantly growing, expanding, and becoming cheaper to run. I have not subscribed to cable TV for 3 years now and I do not intend on going back. Luckily I don't live in Canada and my ISP doesn't impose any monthly caps.
Even if cable TV were free, I still wouldn't use it. Most of the stuff I watch doesn't air in the U.S. anyway.

The inaccuracies and misconstruing begins at "0:29" and continues for the rest of the video.
The CRTC did not approve the application of Usage based billing on "All Canadian internet users regardless of their choice of ISP".
Thats patently false. The recent UBB decision dealt with resellers of Bell DSL connections. Cable companies, Fibre ISP's, wireless internet providers etc etc have always been able to place caps and surcharges on connections they sale.
The inaccuracies and misconstruing in your statement beings at: "did not" and continues on from there.
Resellers have always been charged a flat rate for renting the "last mile" connections in a specific area. This decision will allow Bell to charge them dynamically based on their usage. Sure Bell(and others) could always implement caps for their own users but not those of a third party reseller.
This decision will set a precedent that will make competition very difficult.
@undefinablereasoning yeah exactly. "Resellers" not "all ISP's in Canada" . Cable ISPs, Fibre ISPs , Wireless ISPs , Satellite ISPs have all had caps for years, some had tiers based on bandwidth usage, some charged overages, and some just slowed down your access to essentially dialup speed if you went past your cap.
Is it just factually inaccurate to claim that this recent CRTC decision granted the ability for all ISP's to start implementing caps.
SUKItm you have absolutley no clue what you are talking about. Yo9u are either a Bell Shill or you are very ignorant when it comes to UBB in canada. Please educate yourself before commenting any more here. And if you are a Bell shill trying to stir up controversy you can go lick balls.
Great, truthful, HONEST video (that the big 5 don't want us to see!)
You know what's wrong with Canada? We like our "Big 5"... Big 5 Telecommunications. Big 5 Banks. Big 5 GOOD Hockey Teams (Canucks, Flames, Oilers, Sen's, Habs), etc etc. (Sorry Leafs, I love you, but you suck!!!).
WE need to go back to the unlimited plans of the 90's (I had Rogers, 3mbs, unlimited for $29.99 in 1998!) and get away from allowing oligopoly's.
@SUKItm No, it isn't. If you think that after watching this video, or listening to the testimony of Bell in front of the CRTC, and the supposed evidence they have produced... then you must work for one of the large telecommunications providers mentioned in this video.
UBB is designed to keep Canadians from using less expensive, independent services (i.e. Netflix) in place of their existing services (cable TV). Nothing more.
@SUKItm You are clearly misinformed. UBB is simply a grab by the monopolies to maintain their control and of video media. Bell actually has a new service (FIBE) that utilizes the internet to deliver television and their service happens to be exempt from UBB. There are many new media services that require bandwidth and UBB is a grab to limit their growth and the use of the internet to distribute media. We are all using more bandwidth every day and that demand will only grow as it should.
@SUKItm Very necessary for Bell's (and Rogers) profits! They readily admit this -- even gloat -- to their financial analysts and investors. Read the article at michaelgeist.ca titled "BCE CEO Cope Says UBB Accounts for Almost All Internet Revenue Gains" (YT won't allow me to post the direct URL)
Want to know where this corporate control of the media leads? Look at the USA. The corporations control the candidate choices, the news , er, propaganda, and so control the nation.
The reason they want to cap your data usage and charge you Usage Based Billing is precisely because legitimate things like Netflix and other legitimate and legal online media streaming sites exist. These present direct competition to their television services. . I actually had a Shaw representative recommend their pay-per-view on demand movies as an alternative to Netflix when I inquired about my data usage
Many told me this would never happen or they would speak with their "pocketbooks". Apparently there were'nt enough pocketbooks or at&t is deaf to the complaining. We have 2 PC's a Magic jack PC, an XBOX, watch about 5x 45minute TV shows a week, and 2 of us play 1 MMO about 35hrs/ea per full-week. Our usage is @ about 100gb per month. The kids have been grounded from those luxuries the last couple months. w w w .ipetitions.c o m /petition/pmdbi/

well no matter what all cable companies are screwing there customers around. I say to all who have cable phone and disconnect it. lets tell these cable companies to take there cable tv and shove it up there ass.
Excellent video! Companies like Rogers not only keep cutting bandwidth on existing plans, but raising their prices to boot on other services like cable television! It's ridiculous how much Canadians put up with. But when there's a virtual monopoly, where else can you go? Not to mention UBB billing will also kill and reduce internet services in colleges, coffee shops etc. It's just insane, but that's what you get when your country is run by corporations and not the people or government.
I just had to "Bribe" my brother to watch this; my son, when I sent him the link, just laughed; well, I suppose the same things happened in Germany in 1930's; people don't want to understand, while their lives are comfortable; what will they be saying in a year to 5 years;
You not only covered UBB but began a dialogue on Net Neutrality at the end!! Wonderful!!
Folks you should be sending this out to all your friends and relatives, lets get this up to half a million before the next election; regardless of which party you vote for, lets get people in office, Federal and Provincial, who understand the Internet and the 21st Century Information Highway;
@SLAVESweARE I think you're just echoing what I said in a short sentence. The CRTC caters to and is a puppet for the large telecoms and media companies (The 5 mentioned in this video)
Fantastic presentation. Couldn't have explained it any better. There are business analysts saying we should be paying for usage like everything else. They are saying that heavy internet users should pay more. I hope most Canadians are not listening to them.
since i presume you're french canadian (your name is french) can you do a french version please? this battle here is Nation-wide, not only english provinces...
@RaptorZX3 I'll consider it, but be advised that translating just about anything from English to French adds an extra 10-20% to the length of the material being translated. That means the video's timing will have to be redone, along with some of the images that have handwritten words on them. It'll almost be like redoing the entire video from scratch.
Maybe I can get away with just including subtitles to the current video.
stop writing useless comments and you won't get on others' nerves. Youtube isn't a place to fight over stuff and trying to "PWN" someone with a comment!
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
Fascism ( /ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a radical, authoritarian nationalist political ideology. Fascists seek to organize a nation according to corporatist perspectives, values, and systems, including the political system and the economy.[
Tony Clement and those goons in the Canadian Republican Party caused this F@#$*% mess with their directive to the CRTC to let market forces run the industry.
The Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) was established in 1932. Over the years, it's role culminated into the CRTC in 1968.
Pointing blame at any one party for UBB is tantamount to blaming all present and future wars on whichever party presided over the first Canadian Tank Brigade.
Under our contemporary fascist loving leaders, UBB and total control of the democracy that WAS the internet is here. This is only the beginning...
It is MORE than valid, however, to point blame at the presiding party which is allowing this debacle to take place on their watch with nothing more than mere words of platitude.
Where is the democratic process we profess to honor here in Canada?
This is, after all, why we are invading nations such as Afghanistan, correct? To bring democracy?
Where is the public debate? That this UBB ruling in no way involves the citizenry should wake everyone up to the joke called Canadian Parliament
@cupidsescorts Canada, democracy? I wouldn't go that far. However, it was the CRTC, an independent body who catered to the telecoms and cable companies by voting in their favour.
The CRTC is is a FEDERAL regulatory agency. Its board members are appointed by Cabinet and Cabinet has the power to issue “directions of general application on broad policy matters”.
CRTC reports and listens to Industry Canada ( Tony Clement anyone?) carrying out telecommunications policies that Industry Canada develops at the pleasure of Cabinet, and the Federal Government.
If Clement feels UBB to be a bad decision, he can simply overrule it using the process granted to him.
BUT HE WON"T. He prefers to do battle on Twitter... BTW,
There are over 250 rural Alberta communities that could have access to world-class broadband Internet services right now from 2nd-tier ISP's and the CRTC firmly says NO! The CRTC has been fighting right along with Telus to deny thousands of Albertans access to broadband for the last 3 years.
The CRTC taking sides with the big boys is NOTHING new, so spare me and others and refrain from calling the CRTC an independent body...
The CRTC is a federal regulatory agency. Its board members are appointed by Cabinet and Cabinet has the power to issue “directions of general application on broad policy matters”.
But INDEPENDENT body?????
There are over 260 small, rural Alberta communities that could have access to world-class broadband Internet services right now, and the CRTC firmly says NO! The CRTC has been fighting right along with Telus to deny thousands of Albertans access to broadband for years...
If people shift the entertainment usage from subscription television to internet-based delivery of the same and other content, the rationale for much of what the CRTC does ceases to exist.
The UBB decision demonstrates that the CRTC have put their interest in self preservation ahead of the interests of Canadians.
Do a quick Google search on CRTC employees, and you will discover the fact that the CRTC is stacked with former Bell and Rogers employees. THE GAME IS RIGGED!!!
A final last question: How many of those individuals making up the CRTC have any qualifications whatsoever that would indicate they are in any way knowledgeable about digital media and the internet?
Why are we allowing broadcasters, journalists, former telecom execs and bureaucrats to rule on a topic and culture they clearly don't understand?
And where are the consumer advocates? Clearly the companies they're regulating are well represented. Where's the other side of the picture?
@hardy83 But the co-opting of their mission has occurred under the current administration. They have since backtracked and every major party is against this move by the CRTC. It just so happens the conservatives were the last to get on board against the measure their "leadership" caused to happen. A directive to the CRTC "to let market forces run the industry" sounds clearly like it is right out of the PC playbook and I see no reason to blame Trudeau for this issue outside partisan rhetoric.
Canada's communication infrastructure should have never been sold. All cable and phones lines should be owned by the government, and I personally wouldn't mind if I had to pay for the forced repurchase of this industry.
Why? Cause in the long run it would cost me less since the government would be treating all customers who want access equally.
Currently Wind Mobile is providing "unlimited" usage data transfers over their wireless Internet with throttle options in place. Might be a backup option for me if usage based does go through.
For all those leaving comments;rather than take up an entire paragraph voicing your frustration at this con-job, please let's have information on what we can do to fight back at this fascistic system here in "Oh Canada".
What a disgrace!
Now this fascist cabal is sending this weasel Mirko Bibic on the tv and radio show circuits with the most BOGUS argument that this ruling will not affect 90% of internet subscribers.
And when we ALL end up paying more for EVERYTHING?

Many told me this would never happen or they would speak with their "pocketbooks". Apparently there were'nt enough pocketbooks or at&t is deaf to the complaining. We have 2 PC's a Magic jack PC, an XBOX, watch about 5x 45minute TV shows a week, and 2 of us play 1 MMO about 35hrs/ea per full-week. Our usage is @ about 100gb per month. The kids have been grounded from those luxuries the last couple months. w w w .ipetitions.c o m /petition/pmdbi/

@supersnowyangel You think that's bad? Rogers reduced their caps for the lite package to 25GB from 60GB, and now to 15GB (plus $4/extra GB!!!)

This is happening in America as well. AT&T ADSL and ADSL2+ is being capped at 150gb/and 250gb from previous 'unlimited'.

Absolutely well done. You have provided a service to Canada for getting this message across. Thank you.

@macplumber Working on it. I'll find a way to go beyond subtitles.
I'll also find a way to create captioned versions as well.

I just had to "Bribe" my brother to watch this; my son, when I sent him the link, just laughed; well, I suppose the same things happened in Germany in 1930's; people don't want to understand, while their lives are comfortable; what will they be saying in a year to 5 years;
SchneeWolfe 11 months ago
You not only covered UBB but began a dialogue on Net Neutrality at the end!! Wonderful!!
Folks you should be sending this out to all your friends and relatives, lets get this up to half a million before the next election; regardless of which party you vote for, lets get people in office, Federal and Provincial, who understand the Internet and the 21st Century Information Highway;
the dinosaurs have had their day!!

The CRTC is corrupt and ignorant of what Canadians want, we're all screwed.
Thanks for nothing, Clement- a big disappointment you were.
neozonz 11 months ago
@SLAVESweARE I think you're just echoing what I said in a short sentence. The CRTC caters to and is a puppet for the large telecoms and media companies (The 5 mentioned in this video)
Andem1984 11 months ago
Fantastic presentation. Couldn't have explained it any better. There are business analysts saying we should be paying for usage like everything else. They are saying that heavy internet users should pay more. I hope most Canadians are not listening to them.

since i presume you're french canadian (your name is french) can you do a french version please? this battle here is Nation-wide, not only english provinces...
RaptorZX3 11 months ago 9
@RaptorZX3 I'll consider it, but be advised that translating just about anything from English to French adds an extra 10-20% to the length of the material being translated. That means the video's timing will have to be redone, along with some of the images that have handwritten words on them. It'll almost be like redoing the entire video from scratch.
Maybe I can get away with just including subtitles to the current video.
TheUBBDeception 11 months ago 10
@RaptorZX3 Yet you wrote your comment in English. Maybe you should make your own video.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.
macplumber 11 months ago
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
macplumber 11 months ago
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
macplumber 11 months ago
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
macplumber 11 months ago
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
macplumber 11 months ago
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
macplumber 11 months ago
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
macplumber 11 months ago
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
macplumber 11 months ago
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
macplumber 11 months ago
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
macplumber 11 months ago
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
macplumber 11 months ago
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
macplumber 11 months ago
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
macplumber 11 months ago
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
macplumber 11 months ago
Fascism ( /ˈfæʃɪzəm/) is a radical, authoritarian nationalist political ideology. Fascists seek to organize a nation according to corporatist perspectives, values, and systems, including the political system and the economy.[
macplumber 11 months ago
Tony Clement and those goons in the Canadian Republican Party caused this F@#$*% mess with their directive to the CRTC to let market forces run the industry.
macplumber 11 months ago
@macplumber CRTC was created by the Liberals when Pierre Trudeau was in charge, not the Conservatives.
So if you want to blame someone, blame the proper party that created the CRTC.
hardy83 11 months ago
@hardy83 You serious?
This is only the beginning...
cupidsescorts 11 months ago
@hardy83
That this UBB ruling in no way involves the citizenry should wake everyone up to the joke called Canadian Parliament
cupidsescorts 11 months ago
@cupidsescorts Canada, democracy? I wouldn't go that far. However, it was the CRTC, an independent body who catered to the telecoms and cable companies by voting in their favour.
Andem1984 11 months ago
@Andem1984

SLAVESweARE 11 months ago
@Andem1984
SLAVESweARE 11 months ago
@Andem1984
SLAVESweARE 11 months ago
@Andem1984
SLAVESweARE 11 months ago
