Packard survived the depression by producing multiple models on the same assembly line, "Flex Assembly Lines". 70 years later, few of the Big 3 plants have flexible assembly lines. Packard Motors stayed in business until they made the bad decision of buying Studebaker without looking into books of Studebaker. They limped along for a few years, and went bankrupt. Especially when you have bailouts and forced mergers of banks too big to fail into mega banks that are way too big to fail. I was discussing this with a few of my OSU friends.
