Before you go criticizing the Cubans for celebrating St. Patrick's Day you need to get your facts straight. First of all a fair number of Irish emigrated to Cuba which was under the control of Spain during the Great Famine. They did this because there wasn't any discrimination against them because they were Roman Catholic unlike what was going on in the U.S.

You're mystified for the same reason that Irish people are when they encounter the US idea of St. Patrick's Day Parade, and Irishness. We never did "Top 'o the mornin'" in Ireland (that's all Hollywood "Oirishry") or eat corned beef and cabbage (it's bacon and cabbage), we don't carry shillelaghs, we never drank green beer or wore plastic paddy leprechaun outfits (but that's changing - imported from the US!).

We Irish are proud of the fact that it's an all-inclusive festival and that anyone can participate around the world to celebrate Irishness, whether they're Irish themselves or not (except in New York, where the remnants of the Ancient Order of Hibernians with their 1950s mindset is still uncomfortable with the idea of gays (shock! horror!) marching with the rest of us.
