@HarislsMvp It can... If you're going to give dog sledding tours in Alaska, Canada, Finland etc. However, if you were willing to put a bit of entrepreunerialism into it, and you don't live somewhere snowy, you could make use of dog rigs etc and make a career out of that. Or become a trainer for peoples family malamutes/huskies and train them to pull rigs and scooters etc.
one time we snow in north geogia we put ah leash on our bird dog duke and strung it to a plastic saucer he pulled bessie lou clear around to the back of the house
You have very beautiful dogs! Thanks for posting the video, I am going to Alaska when I get older and getting a dogsled team of huskies or malamutes and be a musher. Haha, you haven't seen the last of me! My dream is to be in the Yukon Quest some day, I hope my future dogs are as good as yours. :)
@Betu254 -- Two Rivers is just a few miles outside of Fairbanks, so we're several hundred miles from Anchorage. Hope you enjoy your trip up here next spring. May is a great time to visit Alaska.
This is so good to see Malamutes pulling and over such a beautiful landscape. Why have you preferred them over Huskies or the Canadian Eskimo Dogs? Any particular reason? Of course, I, being a Canadian, had to mention the last breed :-)
Love this video, beautiful! Love it when you were going through the woods with the snow covered trees. Just beautiful! Thank you for sharing! When do you start training them to pull?
you are using a weight pull harness.......is this correct?..but then again you do have a couple of tractor units at the rear! .....lol........it may be slower but always follow the snowplough....hike on .
We went to Alaska a few years ago and while we have traveled over a lot of the world, Alaska and New Zealand and Japan are my favorite places. That's pretty tough competition and Alaska hangs tough. The place is so clean and the people so absolutely wonderful (that was before Sarah and Levi ;-) I am ready to go again.
Yes, there are a lot of races here in Alaska, but we don't race. Malamutes aren't fast, but they like to pull a lot of weight, so we use them for freighting and remote expeditions in the Arctic. On the expeditions, Joe uses a team of 22-24 malamutes and they pull three sleds as one big team and on average, they haul a good 3000-4000 lbs. They go out there for several months every witner and explore the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
I think it is amazing in the differnce of dog sledding. If you look at dogs that are used for freight, they are like 70-80 pounds each and have amazing endurance. They race dogs barley weigh anything at all. Our neighbors dogs are like 40 pounds and they just run amazingly fast.
man i love the outdoors!! probably the only thing i would love to do in the winter!!! sled dogs are awosome!!! can they live in michigan or warm places?
Dog sledding is a lot of fun. I think there are quite a few malamute teams in Michigan that are involved in an organization called Great Lakes Sled Dog Association. There are malamute kennels all over the lower 48 states, including Tennessee, so they do adapt well to warmer climates.
im in ontario and my guy handles fine just keep em well watered and keep em inside when its hot out and he'll thank you for it (even tho the wagging of a tail creates a Fur storm)
wow awesome videos i subscribed i love the malamute breed so much and to see em do what they do best was a treat i love how when you went over hills they always looked back to see if you were all good:P have fun sledding
I've been doing real research on Alaska. Would love to move there but my job is specialized. I am about to graduate with a Machining Technology and took some carpentry classes as a minor. I used to hunt hogs with dogs but since hunting regulations are much different here..had to give that up. Now I am considering weight pulling and sledding..how do you teach a single dog to pull?
I would like to do that, but im not living in that kind of places (i live in mexico)... i wish i could live there, thanks for this, i'm gonna train my dogs as well as you do :D

I live in the plains of ND, and it can be -40 one day and 20 above the next, so I don't think Alaska would be a lot worse, just maybe colder and not as extreme. Good luck with your dreams! why do the dogs have different harnesses on?
michaeld1357 1 year ago
@michaeld1357
We use different harnesses depending on the age of the dog, their position in the team, their size, and their experience level.

Hey there. The music is from an album called Bass Jams. The song is "For the Honor of My Dad" by Bill Evans.

how long does the snow fall last, and when does it start? thanks ^-^
Wolffheartt 2 years ago
Usually in the Two Rivers area here in the interior of Alaska, we start accumulating snow in mid- to late October and it's typically gone by mid May.

how do you teach them to do that?
GravityUpsideDown 2 years ago
Pulling the sleds comes pretty naturally to malamutes, but teaching them the commands to stop and go takes a lot of time, patience, and persistence.
