To be honest, I've used both and I've found that they're very comparable. They're essentially 6 of one, half-dozen of the other. WinRar has a prettier interface but functionally they are pretty much the same. The fact that 7-zip is free is a major advantage and it's the reason I use it. It's free and it just works. What more could you ask for?
That is not fair!!. You need to activate the "solid" compression method in WinRAR. Because 7-Zip uses this method by default and you need to activate this option manually in WinRAR.
Pirating WinRAR is an ultimate admittance to failure on all levels. Buying it is just personal choice. Using 7-Zip is just personal choice. But pirating WinRAR- it's hilarious and just speaks volumes about some people's inability to look around and find free competitors that work just as good for the average user. A WinRAR is you, alright.
Even after winrar expires the 30 day trial, you can still use it. The only drawback is that some features will not be available. Ex: you won't be able to heal corrupted or broken files in winrar unless you buy. I usually always stick to open source applications.
End-users may be fighting here, but since LZMA (.7z) is public domain and is proprietary, many large companies have started using LZMA compression. For example, Apple recently started using LZMA embedded inside installer programs for the software they make for Windows (such as iTunes). So far, there aren't very many implementations of RAR compression in large corporate settings. The only real place RAR is widely used is Warez distribution (blech).
No, WinRAR is proprietary. Free in this case does not mean "at no cost" - rather, it means free as in "free speech". The RAR format is proprietary, as is the program used to make it, meaning that the source code is not available, and there are restrictions on how you are allowed to use it. On the other hand, the 7z format is in the Public Domain, and the 7zip file manager is released under the Gnu General Public License, allowing to do (almost) whatever you want with it.
I have thils file that says "could not be open" and asked what to do? whether open it web service or select program list" I chose the winRAR archiver and then the file change to a "file" with winrar image on it? how do I change it back? help plss
retarded test setup.. one of the reasons why winrar is still popular is the speed differences in extracting/compressing.. you can sure get slighty better compression in 7-zip but at the cost of more cpu time.. poor test really
i try to download 7zip and it wont show link when i try to use it 4 minecraft mods

If you do not like the 7-Zip theme, type in 7-Zip Theme Manager on Google, download it and install it.

yeomond 2 years ago 3
@yeomond Yeah, but KGB is slow for what it does. It shouldn't take hours to ultra compress a small file with PAQ7. Decompression is also slow.

7Zip is more secure than WinRAR when it comes to encrypting files. 7Zip does AES-256 while WinRAR does AES-128.
7Z tells you which hash-algorithm it uses & tells you how it derive its e-keys, RAR doesn't.

I did some testing on zippers myself. 7-zip is better than Winrar, but uses more compression time. Extraction time is about the same.
Of course there are extremely slow programs that offers better compression. For text files, the programs with dictionary are totally superior.

you didnt use solid archive in winrar. That increases compression rates
