I love this movie, but I gotta love the book. It's part of a great series and it's just too bad that Dennis Lehane wrote so few books about them. But I also like some of the changes they made on some of the characters and plotlines.
Dennis Lehane wrote a sequel to this book. A direct sequel called Moonlight Mile. If you like Lehane's Kenzie/Gennaro novels then this is one you cannot miss. Did Patrick do the right thing by bringing Amanda 'home'? Ever wonder what happened to her?
@musicis101 The bulk of these scenes were shot in Dorchester - the triple decker shots are all on Romsey, Sudan St, etc, off of Dot Ave, the Church of God is on Stoughton St, there's a shot down Dudley St where the commuter rail goes overhead, some shots done up on Blue Hill Ave, etc. There's also a Roxbury shot in there, etc. Plus the Southie shots of course.
cont... I find the people who started in the cracks, and then fell through. This city can be hard. When I was young, I asked my priest how you could get to heaven and still protect yourself from all the evil in the world. He told me what God said to his children, "You are sheep among wolves. Be wise as serpents, yet innocent as doves."
I see a couple of people wanted a transcript of the opening:
I always believed it was the things that you don't choose, that makes you who you are. Your city, your neighborhood, your family. People here take pride in these things, like it was something they'd accomplished...the bodies around their souls, the cities wrapped around those. I lived on this block my whole life, most of these people have. When your job is to find people who are missing, it helps to know where they started.
Thanks for putting this up, I have been looking for the opening scene to this movie everywhere! I love all the things he says, do you by any chance know all the words?
It would be great to write it down, I love love love this movie!!!!
@flashbeak a lot of people say it's been badly edited. That's their opinion I guess but I love this film it gives me chills and I think Casey plays the part superbly. It would have been so easy to cast a huge a-lister who would have overacted the part and ruined it. I know Casey is an A-lister but you know what I mean
Harry Gregson Killed this score. To me it's what makes this scene what it is. I don't think most people realize that composers have to watch the scoreless version of the film & literaly create a backdrop that will go with it. Btw Ben Affleck might not be the best actor in the world but He's without a doubt an incredible director.
Indeed a great movie and one of the best opening scenes of all time. It's the combination of great music, great images, the voice of Casey Affleck. and wise, inspiring words
This opening alone made me appreciate life even more...Seeing the diversity in culture on one block alone, and so many different families sharing the same street made it feel like 1 big family.
The movie obviously felt realer than MANY movies.
And going back n forth to Boston so much, sometimes the same feelings go thru my head...sometimes even when im depressed and im in Boston, it feels like no one wants others around them to feel the same stress they do (hard to explain).
This film is fucking amazing...not what I expected from Ben Affleck. I think i've judged him wrongly...Casey Affleck is very talented. Far better than the novel.
This movie is boston, reminds me as a kid when i lived with my uncle outside of Boston because things were rough back home and we use to go through the city and i took everything in and never forgot. Great film.
In my opinion, he did do the right thing by principle, but as far as the future of the little girl is concerned, we can only wonder what lies ahead for her. I would have made the same decison as Casey Affleck by calling the police, because although Morgan Freeman's intentions were for the sake of the little girl, it was wrong. We are all confronted with a moral dilemma in our lives and the decisons we make stay with us whether they were right or wrong.
The illest shyt about this movie to me is that i worked at one of the places in the opening scene. the mural on the wall of the orange train and basketball jersey is the on the same building i painted a mural of more than 2 summers ago.
You don't have to be from Boston to feel connection to it.
It's about your roots, your beginning -- your cultures and traditions -- how where you were born and raised affects how you are as a person, and how that is sacred to some.
This opening monologue displays the character's feelings about one's roots, as in their family and neighborhood. His feelings about this ultimately leads him to the crucial decision he makes at the end of the film.
the most powerful, inspiring, gut-wrenching movie in the history of filmmaking. it's a crime this film didn't pull out an oscar. christ, it only got one nomination. ben affleck was flawless in his debut, and the acting (especially amy ryan) was unbelievable. i can't get over how damn perfect this movie is.
Very rarely does a movie inspire me so that it becomes a part of me. This is such a film. A powerhouse of acting with no special effects. All the explosions just don't hit me like that that pull and tug at my heart.
thanks for sharing this. i admit when i saw it at the cinema recently (loved the film) this intro blew me away; breath-taking. excuse me. i've, er, got something in my eye..
Reminiscent of the opening to the 1993 film Philadelphia.

Gone Baby Gone is one of the best movies ever made.
Ben Affleck is truly a great Director.
I am hoping very much that The Town is as potent a crime drama, as this film was a poetic, heartbreaking, abduction film.
