i don't get the meaning of the song, can someone explain it to me?
i can see there is a deeper meaning to the words alone, but it is really complicated ev even after i read the lyrics 2 or 3 times. hopefully someone can explain it a little more throughout to me.
I'm white ( not that it matters) from a small seaside town in the uk. I Fu**king luv Public Enemy ...loved 'em when I was 18 love 'em now age 40 :)...up the revolution !!!well done to all those who marched in London today
@Art106 Strom Thurmond had a mixed child out of wedlock and was still considered a racist. and a classist. There is a belief in some parts of American that blacks, latinos, asians, and other "minorities" exist for the amusement of whites. That is racism pure and simple. Search and read the Richard Warren Lewis interview in Playboy and you'll see some of this comments.
@carmarher1 ever heard of the middle passage? Guess not, read & learn before you speak. "someone who thinks, may not know. someone who knows, may not think" anyways there talking about fighting the power, not, not wanting to live in the united states u blind rat. anyways wake up everybody and 1 LOVE.
Chuck D in my view is a musician first and foremost. This song captures the sentiments and hope of a generation. Calling Elvis a racist is baiting. Elvis was simply not a racist. Its a step too far.
@Longniddrie Elvis, like many other musicians of his day, used a music style heavily woven into the culture of black people and put a white face on it. He really was the first cross-over blockbuster artist. Eminem is that artist today. Chuck spoke metaphorically about the hype surrounding Elvis being racist (i.e. another thing stolen from blacks and used for profit by whites) not necessarily Elvis' racism. I think Elvis was a great man to the end but the was a victim of others greed.
One of my favorite Hip-Hop songs ever...... Elvis most likely was a racist so this song is true and great. Whoever doesn't like this is is messed up this is awesome!!!!
The fact is: Elvis arrived in the mid 50's and put a new spin on Rock music putting the black artist out of business. Little Richard went into the ministry and Chuck Berry served time in jail for violating the Mann Act. I think that black folks are just plan bitter that Elvis ruled the charts with number one hits. Chuck Berry and Little Richard never hit the number one slot once in the 50's because the King of the charts did. And that's the fact with out name calling!
@Entropy161 Who says I am white? I am just talking facts. Dennis D never meet the man so how could he say that he was a racist? The fact that you assumed I was white shows your prejudice nature. Facts are facts like or not. This is the internet and anybody could say anything with out backing it up. Give me the name of any famous black artist that claimed that Elvis was racist or that he ripped him off. If you do your homework and check you will see quite the opposite!
@khj93play um excuse me but i actually think 'black folks' as you say are bitter because Elvis Presley was racist and that is the truth without sugar coating it there is no other way to put it it has nothing to do with his success or his (suckish) number one hits. Thank you
@uknouloveme4 "Elvis was GOD given. There's no explanation, a messiah comes around every few thousand years and Elvis was it this time" Who said this? Little Richard! James Brown said ; "There will never be another soul brother like Elvis I hope to me him in heaven" U can't deny his greatness so you have to use the race card. That is weak my brother!
@khj93play First of all the race card isn't being played, fact is fact! If you do your home work you would find that elvis got most of his influence from black artist! If James and Richard actually said that, maybe they recognised the style that he was trying to immulate! He was mainly a successful with a certain group of people, where James and Richard was recieved by all! Was elvis a great artist, yes he sold a lot of records!
@khj93play Was elvis GOD given? Maybe! Try Percy Sledge, Otis Redding or Little Richard, for your sake! By the way, the race card would have been pulled if I had said he sucked because he was white! Try again!
@uknouloveme4 Elvis apprciated R&B music just as much as he loved Country music. One of the reasons that some R&B artist admired the man was because Elvis's early songs were covers of R&B songs. Howerever Elvis did not bank on none of that music. Intended or not , it intorduced these artist and thier music to a White America and the money went straight into the pockets of the artist that wrote the songs. For Black Artist to say that Elvis Stoled from them would of been professional suicide!
@khj93play nah elvis a fag the muthfuka did steal from chuck berry so did the beach boyz and did chuck berry get apid for it during the time man wake up no white man every back int he day respected black folks so why the fuck would they pay them off for there work it took years for the artist to get there money from the white artist that robbed them
@khj93play stay out of black music mayn it just dont belong to yall folks artist just milk yall like crackheads its funny kus in the downlow i dnk if you pp lnoticed we laugh at u when u listen to hiphop or go to hiphop concerts kus yall really think yall belong around this muthfuka
I do not think PE statement about Elvis is intended to say the man did not have talent. Rather what Chuck D was saying that Elvis took black music and popularized it. Yet when blacks did it was not even recognized.
Paul Mooney for president! Oh and I'm boycotting the super bowl, the fact that the NFL supports a pedophile (Pete Townsend was recently busted for child pornography) is beyond unacceptable...
sucking dick is different from giving respect where respect is due. public enemy had an impact. but not like elvis did. do you think in 70 years public enemy is gona be remembered?
Their music is barely even used today, while Elvis's music is still a huge part of the music industry. In 100 years, do you think PE is suddenly going to make a comeback? I think PE is good. But to say they have more influence than the king of rock n roll, or even other bands such as the Beatles, is ridiculous.
2 pac is not the greatest rapper of all time infact he was shit and that why he went in to the film indusrty,BDK would have eated him for breakfast 3 times over !

P.S Your username is "Jherikurl" He must have had some impact on you.
There was nothing racist about Elvis. He covered African American's songs sure, but he gave the credit, and royalties where it was due. The truth is, the King (elvis) has more talent in his little finger than the entire rap community. He could do stuff with a simple spiritual song straight from his heart, that these "Gangsta ass niggas" can't do with Garage band, and however many cheesy cliche rhymes they can stuff in to one verse.
@BSUOSUlover everyone knows elvis wasn't. even pulbic enemy knows elvis was not a racist. They apologized for calling him one for the release of the song.
@BSUOSUlover No the Beatles and all of R&B and rap have more talent in all their pinky fingers than Elvis.... John Lennon and Michael Jackson are the kings, not Elvis.
it went from beign scary and potent to authority until it was comercialized, same with punk accept in both cases somehting is true, real shit still exists man
chuck said elvis respected black music but not the black people: It's a WASP ting my pagan ass wont understand. Check tiny bastion of WASPness England, for them it's normal to Love CURRY but Hate Indians, Love Black Music but Hate Black folk - hence Skinheads. Chuck lyrics like the role of a Prostitute who realise her Pimp may love sex but hates her, she wakes up and DARE she get the courage to kick the Pimp away & and stand up for she self? Who Care Black Folk do/did.
Chuck took on the traditional idols or role models of America and basically said "just because they were heroes to you does not mean that they were heroes to me." Elvis and John Wayne did not mean as much to him as the people who truly influenced his life "that don't appear on no stamp." His heroes were not as recognized (or recognized at all) as these two but he refused to conform to the popular belief system. Fight the Powere is about going against conformation and thinking for self.
It does. I wasn't sure if it was a admonition of Elvis or more social commentary of the black experience as you've indicated. Although, if you listen to the rest of the lyrics - it sounds like there wasn't much love for the king of rock and roll. Elvis really introduced black music to mainstream America. From what I know of Elvis, he was a kind person. Very generous and spiritual. I think that should have some value to all people.
And that's not to say he wasn't flawed. Who isn't? He grew up in the South at a time when racism was accepted - expected. Elvis' emergence on the music scene back then effected black Americans and truly
broke down the barriers in the white community for them. It started incrementally with him. As for John Wayne: Racist. Period.
