At least dry clean hands are required. A dusting with talc is helpful. Corrosion from perspiration should not be a problem for fifty years or more (if ever). I've always worked with bare hands and find gloves more of a hindrance than an aid. For those with delicate skin, especially on the thumb when winding the initial three turns, perhaps a bit of tape might help.
Depends on the size of the piano but could range from 200 to 300 for a set of bass strings usually made by Mapes in Tennessee. Samples are required and the number of bichords etc. Treble wire is pulled from spools ranging in thickness from #13 to #22 wire.
