Children / Haters on YouTube clearly have no idea about the actual size of an Ohio class submarine, or how it operates or dives on a normal submerge. Cool video. ex-MT2 (SS) USS Nevada 733. Thanks for the upload.
Being under is easier on the sailors than being on surface. Even tied to pier you roll at times, but underwater you don't even really feel the boat moving.
and i do currently serve on board the USS Michigan. and its not as scary as people think. we go through a lot of training to ensure that once the ship dives, we can make sure it surfaces again
@Wololo1234 That's my old boat! How is she fairing these days? I heard she was decommed and then recommed as an SSG? When I was with her, she was still SSBN 727. Served on the Gold Crew.
Yeah, it's not scary. You might get fidgety the first time you drop below test depth and the hull creaks, but nothing more than that. Hell riding on the surface in rolling oceans is scarier. 45 to 45 :-D
@anarkin09 And that's exactly why I HATE anything to do with the ocean. Makes me sick when they show under-water views on TV, let alone the real thing.

Very nice! And interesting comments from a lot of people. I especially like the critical comments from people who, evidently, have absolutely no idea how a submarine works, what it's capabilities are, and what it's like to live and work aboard one. Very entertaining!
There has to be a reason why the dive was so slow. If you notice, they slow down to practically 0 kts and descended vertically. Why? I'm sure the captain and the diving officer know.
HELP! I served on the Greatest boat ever, The USS Minneapolis St Paul as SK3(SS) Freeman. I am seeking any info on any crew members who were on the 1991 north pack during the storm of the century. contact me asap please. one2rock@hotmail.com
Naturally I have no clue as to whether this was a good dive or not. But as a civvie, it shows me what guts you guys have to go to sea in one of these. Watching the waves as it closed over your boat... my hat's off to those who have and those who do serve on these magnificent machines.
Geez , it took him long enough! I could have dove & surfaced 5 times in the time it took this guy to dive! I wonder if he knows that you dive at 2/3rds. I can just see the OOD now, "maneuvering - con, make turns for 3 knots"..."Dive, make your depth 160 ft, SSSSLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYYY" ! I wonder if the OOD knows that it's OK to have more than a 2 degree down angle...I mean, look at the rudder for most of the dive! Just my two cents.
This is a really cool vid. All you bubbleheads will know that I had the most pathetic job in the Navy - [Well at least as far as WE are concerned] I was an STG (for the laypeople - a Sonar Technician SURFACE} on a brooke Class FFG during the 1980's. @JayCon3 No disrespect intended, STG, but I was an STS(SS) in the 90's, and I still kinda laugh at the very concept of an STG. I guess I should rather learn to just pity you...
I have a question for you sub guys, when a ssbn or otherwise is on the surface, people are manning the bridge, but in any underwater shots, or during a dive, those areas seem to be closed off, Im wondering if anyone has a image or video of how this works, if its not classified, im building a rather large scale model of a Ohio class boat, and would like to make it as accurate as i can...
the bridge is sealed off via the control room trunk to the bridge, everyone is down in the control room while the dive is on. when you surface, you open the hatch and fold down the access hole to the bridge , then look at the water and breath fresh air.
What is the maximum speed the sub can travel when its periscope is fully extended? Or does it have to be at a complete stop, hovering, to avoid the stresses that might be put on it in motion? Anybody know?
Why not just travel through at a depth where the periscope is above the waterline about 10-15 feet and have the rest of the submarine below it at ALL TIMES during the sunlit hours of the day?
This way you could see stuff a few miles away without letting them know that you're even there.
@r5t6y12 That is a complicated question, and there is no simple answer. However, in a nut shell, it all depends. There are places a boat can't be submerged due to depth, or due to "operating space," IE other boats. Moving havens, the "pin" and many other things go into when/where a boat surfaces/submerges.
@r5t6y12 That's standard operating procedure. A sub is designed to stay underwater, and you just described the purpose OF the periscope. But it's only a few feet, and not just during sunlit hours. The whole point of a submarine is to stay hidden.
The comments here are much more entertaining than the video itself.
For those with a legitimate question, there is no need to ever dive really quickly. Modern nuclear powered submarines are just about never on the surface unless they are leaving/entering port. It's better to be safe than fast - god forbid we get water in the people-tank.
@the1henson yes coming thru the straits of gilbralter coming up to PD, and staring at tanker coming at you , very very good reason to dive as fast as you can
that's air from the submarine's ballast tanks. In order to submerge it needs to empty the air from the tanks, and the water you see is just a little ocean water that goes over top of the hole that the air is coming out of
@dacz99 Not really. We used to make alot of slow/long dives. When we would try a new ballast configuration or if we were training, we would do that. Or, the OOD is really new/green/scared.
@shenanigan87 Well in a nutshell, it's to slow. It doesn't take that long to dive the ship. If he's getting tossed around by the sea state and his rudder is broached for most of the time, then it means that his speed is too slow and his dive angle isn't low enough. Also needs to flood the tanks, he's too light. If the sea state was any rougher, his fairwater planes would start slamming on the surface because of the superstructure being broached. There it is for what's it's worth! Enjoy!
I think the skipper had a pretty good idea about how long it would take for the boat to get submerged. Thats problaby why the clip is still on youtube, because the skipper knows this is not information that is classified or can compromise in any way the safety of subs around the globe.

those who says that this dive is too slow........front dive planes are on vridge and they dont have effect because they are not in water
2. stern dive planes also dont have some special effects on surface
3. filling water in tanks and releasing an air out.......it is not a one button press procedure.......it takes a time!
(btw ohio class subs are slow heavy and...large........you definitevly had no chance if some better subs like akula, oscar, or victor 3 submarines would attack you
Since these boats don't operate on the surface (unlike WWII boats) the long dive time must not be an operational liability - still, tough luck if a modern sub is caught on the surface.
why does the screen stay solid blue at the end? IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII like sharpies
if under attack wouldnt it need to dive fast?..it only makes logical sense that you could never have a sub dive that slow. otherwise that 500 000 000 dollar sub and all its crew are dead in the water! this must be a leisure dive or something...
Heh, heh...I was in subs....you can't just push a button and sink it in two minutes..there are procedures and things to do all over the boat. And even if they can sink faster....they may not want to publicize it.
@RishiHC The Secret clearance isn't because of Operations, it's because of the Intelligence & Communications issues. How many operator manuals do you know of that are in red Secret binders? Besides, a Fast Attack only requires a Confidential clearance, and our manuals were not controlled documents.
Great vid shipmates, I'm HT1 and a back in '94I served on the USS Simon Lake AS-33 fixing 637's & 688's. Now I fix the 726 class in Bermerton, as a reservist, lots more room than the fast attacks. Hats off to you guys, I enjoy fixing your boats. Run silent Run deep!
Hey Great vid! Kudos to the WY! I was on the 740(g) a few years ago! ET2(ss)... I remember those dives very well... especially manning RADAR and ESM prior to most of the dives! God bless ya'll!
@cuvillier94 Not true at all. A sexually frustrated heterosexual man alone for months with other men on a submarine masturbates in his rack to the heterosexual porn he brought with him.
As a former submariner, I want to say that this one is submerging at an unbelievably SLOW rate. The sub was probably only doing 4 knots (4.5 mph for landlovers) and therefore it is slow. When I dove my SSBN, I did so in less than a minute. This video is fun to watch, but unrealistic in it's speed.
Ben we do not use the word crash. Emergency deep contains all the connotation needed to scare the shit out of one submariner. It will get you to 150 feet as quick as possible.
Yeah i agree, that was slow. looks like they blew the forward and aft trim tanks. but they did not really dive very fast. keeping in mind that the dive planes are responsible for most of the underwater dive. the hull is proabably a neutral bouyancy hull...and they just got the sub to skim the surface before going under..
dive planes are on the sail and until that's underwater it's slow going. Subs use power and planes to move up and down and use tanks to trim and maintain neutral.
I take it in an emergency it dives much faster?

Since these boats don't operate on the surface (unlike WWII boats) the long dive time must not be an operational liability - still, tough luck if a modern sub is caught on the surface.

i think it does that because your underwater i really don't like it either
snufflesandbill 3 years ago
if under attack wouldnt it need to dive fast?..it only makes logical sense that you could never have a sub dive that slow. otherwise that 500 000 000 dollar sub and all its crew are dead in the water! this must be a leisure dive or something...
violoncellomaster 3 years ago
ive seen my own shit dive faster than that.
snookyk 3 years ago
Heh, heh...I was in subs....you can't just push a button and sink it in two minutes..there are procedures and things to do all over the boat. And even if they can sink faster....they may not want to publicize it.

a submarine diving is not secret technology
ke3wh 3 years ago 5
actually it is secret. in order to be on a submarine, you must have a minimum of a secret clearance. thus, operations are not to be discussed.
RishiHC 3 years ago
diving is not classified.
ke3wh 3 years ago

Run silent Run deep!

awsome vid ive alway been fasinated by subs but would never get in one lol!
wiiman87 3 years ago
Hey Great vid! Kudos to the WY! I was on the 740(g) a few years ago! ET2(ss)... I remember those dives very well... especially manning RADAR and ESM prior to most of the dives! God bless ya'll!

zzzzz what a slow dive....yawn
aegisrustopher 4 years ago 2
yea, it was a REALLY slow dive but it never was as fast diving as a diesel boat. I was on both.
pensandcalls 4 years ago
I am surprised at the slow decent, but this is not an alarm dive. I'm used to a U-boat being able to dive in 10 to 15 seconds.

cuvillier94 4 years ago
@cuvillier94 Not true at all. A sexually frustrated heterosexual man alone for months with other men on a submarine masturbates in his rack to the heterosexual porn he brought with him.
jesonger 1 year ago
@jesonger- Hey, we do something like that at military school.
Jurassic0Al 1 year ago
As a former submariner, I want to say that this one is submerging at an unbelievably SLOW rate. The sub was probably only doing 4 knots (4.5 mph for landlovers) and therefore it is slow. When I dove my SSBN, I did so in less than a minute. This video is fun to watch, but unrealistic in it's speed.

a bit slow but nice vid, although i would've liked to see a shot of the entire sub when under water
JazzmanJessedereu 4 years ago
Subs are technological marvels, no doubt about it. But boy I'd think It'd be difficult to be cooped up on one submerged day after day.
Bet they really roll when surfaced.
apeppink 4 years ago
Yes they are marvels. No they (SSBN -Sub Balistic Missle Nuclear) are not cramped. Yes they roll on the surface. But the ride is so smooth.
harlanjames54 4 years ago
It was proberly a standard dive,A crash dive would be much faster.
booboy1066 4 years ago
Ben we do not use the word crash. Emergency deep contains all the connotation needed to scare the shit out of one submariner. It will get you to 150 feet as quick as possible.
sundog47 4 years ago 2
Yeah i agree, that was slow. looks like they blew the forward and aft trim tanks. but they did not really dive very fast. keeping in mind that the dive planes are responsible for most of the underwater dive. the hull is proabably a neutral bouyancy hull...and they just got the sub to skim the surface before going under..
violoncellomaster 4 years ago
dive planes are on the sail and until that's underwater it's slow going. Subs use power and planes to move up and down and use tanks to trim and maintain neutral.

that seemed to take ages
