  • I take it in an emergency it dives much faster?

  • Children / Haters on YouTube clearly have no idea about the actual size of an Ohio class submarine, or how it operates or dives on a normal submerge. Cool video. ex-MT2 (SS) USS Nevada 733. Thanks for the upload.

  • DIVE DIVE DIVE, 4 years latter, Sir we are at 15ft...

  • Submarine diving (view from periscope) Part 1\20

  • My dad was on this boat for a few years a while back.

  • Being under is easier on the sailors than being on surface. Even tied to pier you roll at times, but underwater you don't even really feel the boat moving.

  • Submarines> Targets

  • and i do currently serve on board the USS Michigan. and its not as scary as people think. we go through a lot of training to ensure that once the ship dives, we can make sure it surfaces again

  • @Wololo1234 That's my old boat! How is she fairing these days? I heard she was decommed and then recommed as an SSG? When I was with her, she was still SSBN 727. Served on the Gold Crew.

Yeah, it's not scary. You might get fidgety the first time you drop below test depth and the hull creaks, but nothing more than that. Hell riding on the surface in rolling oceans is scarier. 45 to 45 :-D

  • that is classified information. last time information like that was leaked, we lost a couple subs

  • How deep can a top submarine these days dive?

  • @3HolterBrothers Greater than 1000ft is all I can tell you.

  • @Landrar

    In meters?

Why can no one say exactly the limit?

  • @3HolterBrothers Feet, not meters. You can't be told because the information is classified confidential.

  • @Landrar

    OK

I did not mean like in meters, but what is 1000ft in meters? 500-600m?

  • @3HolterBrothers 305 meters. Remember that's not max depth, just all I can tell you.

  • @Landrar

    Okey, i understand.

  • How many Ballast tanks? any auxiliary ballast tanks to compensate for missile launch?

  • Cool video. I'm thinking about joining up. How would I get on a submarine anyway?

  • @F1god04 I'd assume some form of dock. I can't imagine they'd make you swim.

  • @F1god04 Tell your recruiter and the MEPS people that you want to volunteer for it.

  • kinda scary how something that big and deadly just dissappears under the ocean as if nothing happened

  • @anarkin09 And that's exactly why I HATE anything to do with the ocean. Makes me sick when they show under-water views on TV, let alone the real thing.

  • I wish you had turned the periscope to the stern once submerged. Anyway, nice vid. As a rc subs modeller, I've done that with my models.

  • i needed to see this. currently at NNPTC hating my life. 8 weeks to comp!

  • @TheNatusch87 I know the feeling! I took comp in October, 1997 in Orlando. You think it sucks now... just wait till you deploy!

  • @jerm138 aw come on, i'm still under the illusion that i'll actually enjoy time underway! stop stealing my motivation....

  • How could anyone not like this video?

  • I kind of miss it. Made 4 patrols on Sam Rayburn and 6 more on the Alabama. Made my last patrol in '89. If I had the opportunity, I'd make one more.

  • @Boomervet635 i recently trained on the 635. its weird to hear about the boat when it was operational. the forward section isn't even close to a real boat.

  • Very nice! And interesting comments from a lot of people. I especially like the critical comments from people who, evidently, have absolutely no idea how a submarine works, what it's capabilities are, and what it's like to live and work aboard one. Very entertaining!

  • @RetiredUSNChief Hooyah Chief.

  • Take that, whales!

  • Scope is under. Lowing number 2 periscope. I miss that. There was something to be said for shutting the world out for a few weeks at a time.

  • I just saw Spongebob.

  • Wyoming has a submarine? That's almost as odd as hearing about honest politics in Sanfrasicko.

  • 21 people are fans of Justin Bieber.

  • There has to be a reason why the dive was so slow. If you notice, they slow down to practically 0 kts and descended vertically. Why? I'm sure the captain and the diving officer know.

  • freaking slow dive you already dead by destroyers

  • @12ock Nah. They're already being tracked by a Russian sub.

  • @12ock Subs only ever dive when first leaving port, and are never surfaced in hostile waters.

  • *TALKS ABOUT SUBMARINES AND ABOUT HOW COOL IT WAS BEING ON ONE* sorry just wanted to join the convo lolz ill be underway soon enough tho

  • Who the hell is on scope? Stop watching your ass and do your job.

  • Wake me up when it's finally underwater...

  • Naturally I have no clue as to whether this was a good dive or not. But as a civvie, it shows me what guts you guys have to go to sea in one of these. Watching the waves as it closed over your boat... my hat's off to those who have and those who do serve on these magnificent machines.

  • Geez , it took him long enough! I could have dove & surfaced 5 times in the time it took this guy to dive! I wonder if he knows that you dive at 2/3rds. I can just see the OOD now, "maneuvering - con, make turns for 3 knots"..."Dive, make your depth 160 ft, SSSSLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYYY" ! I wonder if the OOD knows that it's OK to have more than a 2 degree down angle...I mean, look at the rudder for most of the dive! Just my two cents.

  • This is a really cool vid. All you bubbleheads will know that I had the most pathetic job in the Navy - [Well at least as far as WE are concerned] I was an STG (for the laypeople - a Sonar Technician SURFACE} on a brooke Class FFG during the 1980's. I have ALWAYS had the utmost respect for you guys. When I was in - I thought that showing a vid like this would get you hung by your balls - ESPECIALLY being on a boomer!

  • @JayCon3 No disrespect intended, STG, but I was an STS(SS) in the 90's, and I still kinda laugh at the very concept of an STG. I guess I should rather learn to just pity you...

  • by this time the dive was over the sub would have been blown up several times.

  • @immortal4942

It's a SSBN. They have no need to dive quickly and as a Nuclear submarine surface running is a rarity.

  • I have a question for you sub guys, when a ssbn or otherwise is on the surface, people are manning the bridge, but in any underwater shots, or during a dive, those areas seem to be closed off, Im wondering if anyone has a image or video of how this works, if its not classified, im building a rather large scale model of a Ohio class boat, and would like to make it as accurate as i can...

  • @tedparkes

the bridge is sealed off via the control room trunk to the bridge, everyone is down in the control room while the dive is on. when you surface, you open the hatch and fold down the access hole to the bridge , then look at the water and breath fresh air.

  • I was thinking some 40DD's might go swimming by.

  • I did a tiger cruise in 96 when the Wyoming was under Cdr Paradise...

    That is an amazing machine!

  • @UCFCamaroSS Cdr Paradise was my XO on the USS Michigan SSBN 727 Gold back in the early '90s. Hadn't thought of him in years.

  • is this a dive without using dive planes maybe?

  • What is the maximum speed the sub can travel when its periscope is fully extended? Or does it have to be at a complete stop, hovering, to avoid the stresses that might be put on it in motion? Anybody know?

  • @jonesy97 That's classified but it can move.

  • this is the funniest video ever! in the entire world! it did not work! i can not stop laughing SEND HELP! . .. . . .. .

  • @FranQin didnt work?

  • this is a cool video.

  • I have a question.

Why not just travel through at a depth where the periscope is above the waterline about 10-15 feet and have the rest of the submarine below it at ALL TIMES during the sunlit hours of the day?

This way you could see stuff a few miles away without letting them know that you're even there.

  • its called radar

  • @r5t6y12 That is a complicated question, and there is no simple answer. However, in a nut shell, it all depends. There are places a boat can't be submerged due to depth, or due to "operating space," IE other boats. Moving havens, the "pin" and many other things go into when/where a boat surfaces/submerges.

  • well some do :P....

  • at periscope depth, a submarine is visible from the air.

  • Comment removed

  • @r5t6y12 if you can see them, they can see you

  • @r5t6y12 That's standard operating procedure. A sub is designed to stay underwater, and you just described the purpose OF the periscope. But it's only a few feet, and not just during sunlit hours. The whole point of a submarine is to stay hidden.

  • I thought only the captain or XO could use the periscope.

  • @rprince418 No, lots of people use it. In fact, on my boat, the skipper rarely got on the scope and barely every the xo.

  • That's a great clip, a nice gentle dive... then make like a hole in the water. Thanks for sharing.

  • The comments here are much more entertaining than the video itself.

For those with a legitimate question, there is no need to ever dive really quickly. Modern nuclear powered submarines are just about never on the surface unless they are leaving/entering port. It's better to be safe than fast - god forbid we get water in the people-tank.

    -FT1(SS)

  • @the1henson hahahahahaahahh "water in the people tank" i lvoe it

  • @the1henson yes coming thru the straits of gilbralter coming up to PD, and staring at tanker coming at you , very very good reason to dive as fast as you can

  • Ok, was this a slow dive? It seems like it took an awful long time.

  • What does wave action feel like in a sub?

  • Surfaced, a sub rolls around a LOT. But submerged you dont feel anything. . unless you're changind depth or a high speed turn.

  • Interesting thanks for the reply.

  • I've only been on a submarine underway once but isn't the periscope view classified secret?

  • why would the periscope be classified? they haven't exactly changed much since WWI. other the the low light modes & the laser rangefinder.

  • even if it was secret classified everyone on the boat is required at least a secret security clearance.

  • Takes very long to dive.

  • At 2:15 you can see the propeller

  • "CON SONAR, CAVITATING" lolz

  • just for further reference, that is referred to as a screw

  • Good job!

  • Wow! Very Interesting, thx for sharing. Didn't know it takes so long to dive... What's the water the Submarine blews out?

  • that's air from the submarine's ballast tanks. In order to submerge it needs to empty the air from the tanks, and the water you see is just a little ocean water that goes over top of the hole that the air is coming out of

  • thank you!

  • Chief of the watch needs to take on more water in the trim tanks lol

  • 3 Knots to nowhere and zzzzzzzzzzzzz oh... sorry. I fell asleep during the dive. Must be a Bangor boat...

  • Watch out!! there's a U-BOAT behind you guys!!!

  • Nice sound to a very fast dive, or is the sub sinking!?

  • Very interesting. I like to see the things that my son is doing when he is out of view!

  • Very impressive indeed. Thank you for sharing this not so usual images.

  • The OOD needs do be disqualed...that was the worst dive I've ever seen, and I've seen/been in quite alot of them.

  • @dacz99 Not really. We used to make alot of slow/long dives. When we would try a new ballast configuration or if we were training, we would do that. Or, the OOD is really new/green/scared.

  • @smacman68

yes, that could be the case here.....but I like to pic on JO's! This one is probably a UI !....LOL

  • @dacz99 Could you explain why?

  • @shenanigan87 Well in a nutshell, it's to slow. It doesn't take that long to dive the ship. If he's getting tossed around by the sea state and his rudder is broached for most of the time, then it means that his speed is too slow and his dive angle isn't low enough. Also needs to flood the tanks, he's too light. If the sea state was any rougher, his fairwater planes would start slamming on the surface because of the superstructure being broached. There it is for what's it's worth! Enjoy!

  • @dacz99 im sure, your a fuckin dumbass

  • @scottdheath ,

what makes you so qualified to make a comment on the subject? I'm sure too, that you're a shit for brains.....

  • FTN HTS!!!

  • I"m pretty sure subs can do an emergency dive in a battle situation with is many times faster than this.

  • @yehend Emergency dives aren't done from the surface, nor does a sub surface during battle situations.

  • Was this video released through COMNAVSUFOR PAO? If not I believe you are in trouble!!!!

  • Gracias por servir a nuestro pais. Que dios te bendiga. Que regreses a casa pronto..

  • No sabía que México tiene submarinos del SSBN!

    ;)

  • 潜水艦大好きw

  • ゆっくり沈んでいってね!!!

  • I think the skipper had a pretty good idea about how long it would take for the boat to get submerged. Thats problaby why the clip is still on youtube, because the skipper knows this is not information that is classified or can compromise in any way the safety of subs around the globe.

    Impressive machinery and crew.

I like the Microsoft blue screen at the end:)

    Thx for having the courage.

  • pfsh, I can dive faster than that.

  • dude, that scope is freakin high

  • that was forming a sick little tube ! i would have cracked the board out and gone surfin !!

  • is this a slow dive or fast or just to get under water or what kind?

  • Decks awash. Scope's under... lowering #2 scope. Down!

  • If you look closely at about 2:16 you can see the propeller blades. Be safe guys - thanks for doing what you do for our country!

  • ah, we don't crash dive anymore. Use to do a thing called "quick dive" but it wasn't much faster....and much more dangerouse.

  • So if you crash dive, would it be faster?

  • Chief of the watch, over the 1MC "dive" "dive", 2 blasts of the diving alarm, "dive" "dive"....

  • @VaeVictisVallejo Over the 1MC "dive" "dive", 2 blasts of the diving alarm, "dive" "dive", aye Sir. "DIVE" "DIVE". Whoop. Whoop. "DIVE" "DIVE" I kinda miss that now.

  • @jesonger yes the "Dive Dive" from the COW is for some reason always exciting to hear

  • those who says that this dive is too slow........front dive planes are on vridge and they dont have effect because they are not in water

    2. stern dive planes also dont have some special effects on surface

    3. filling water in tanks and releasing an air out.......it is not a one button press procedure.......it takes a time!

(btw ohio class subs are slow heavy and...large........you definitevly had no chance if some better subs like akula, oscar, or victor 3 submarines would attack you

  • All things bright and beautiful

    All creatures great and small

    All things wise and wonderful

    Trident kills them all

    "We hide with pride"

  • six-four...six-six...six-eight feet!

  • Since these boats don't operate on the surface (unlike WWII boats) the long dive time must not be an operational liability - still, tough luck if a modern sub is caught on the surface.

  • Can I get an "oogah"?

"venting foward, venting aft, decks awash!"

  • why does the screen stay solid blue at the end? IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII like sharpies

  • Why do you say "I" so much? your an idiot!

  • i think it does that because your underwater i really don't like it either

  • if under attack wouldnt it need to dive fast?..it only makes logical sense that you could never have a sub dive that slow. otherwise that 500 000 000 dollar sub and all its crew are dead in the water! this must be a leisure dive or something...

  • ive seen my own shit dive faster than that.

  • Heh, heh...I was in subs....you can't just push a button and sink it in two minutes..there are procedures and things to do all over the boat. And even if they can sink faster....they may not want to publicize it.

  • well your shit doesn't displace 8,000+ tons now does it

  • nope, but you talking shit does(Y)

  • jk...jk

  • lol i was jokin too.

  • shouldn't this be classified?

  • a submarine diving is not secret technology

  • actually it is secret. in order to be on a submarine, you must have a minimum of a secret clearance. thus, operations are not to be discussed.

  • diving is not classified.

  • @RishiHC The Secret clearance isn't because of Operations, it's because of the Intelligence & Communications issues. How many operator manuals do you know of that are in red Secret binders? Besides, a Fast Attack only requires a Confidential clearance, and our manuals were not controlled documents.

  • Great vid shipmates, I'm HT1 and a back in '94I served on the USS Simon Lake AS-33 fixing 637's & 688's. Now I fix the 726 class in Bermerton, as a reservist, lots more room than the fast attacks. Hats off to you guys, I enjoy fixing your boats. Run silent Run deep!

  • awsome vid ive alway been fasinated by subs but would never get in one lol!

  • Hey Great vid! Kudos to the WY! I was on the 740(g) a few years ago! ET2(ss)... I remember those dives very well... especially manning RADAR and ESM prior to most of the dives! God bless ya'll!

  • I was Alerted to your post, although I can't exactly understand the statement...

Here's to ball's on your chin!

  • zzzzz what a slow dive....yawn

  • yea, it was a REALLY slow dive but it never was as fast diving as a diesel boat. I was on both.

  • I am surprised at the slow decent, but this is not an alarm dive. I'm used to a U-boat being able to dive in 10 to 15 seconds.

  • LOL 150 men go down 75 couples come out

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    true... very true

  • @cuvillier94 Not true at all. A sexually frustrated heterosexual man alone for months with other men on a submarine masturbates in his rack to the heterosexual porn he brought with him.

  • @jesonger- Hey, we do something like that at military school.

  • As a former submariner, I want to say that this one is submerging at an unbelievably SLOW rate. The sub was probably only doing 4 knots (4.5 mph for landlovers) and therefore it is slow. When I dove my SSBN, I did so in less than a minute. This video is fun to watch, but unrealistic in it's speed.

  • 150 people go down, 75 couples come up.

  • only men go down so you get 75 gay couples lol

  • what happen if a whale attack you

  • i think its all these submarines that is making the sea levels rise!

  • lmao, well, if your not kiddeng, then you are really stupid!!!!!!!

  • Oh yeah, well what about when they are on the surface?

  • SSBNs rule.

  • Wow that is so exciting, vorne oben zehn, hinten unten fünf. Eddie! Bring uns runter!

  • Das war Li= Lieutenant ingenieur

  • *Command* Pressure the sub up!

  • awesome

  • Wow... that actually freaked me out... 0_o

  • a bit slow but nice vid, although i would've liked to see a shot of the entire sub when under water

  • Subs are technological marvels, no doubt about it. But boy I'd think It'd be difficult to be cooped up on one submerged day after day.

Bet they really roll when surfaced.

  • Yes they are marvels. No they (SSBN -Sub Balistic Missle Nuclear) are not cramped. Yes they roll on the surface. But the ride is so smooth.

  • It was proberly a standard dive,A crash dive would be much faster.

  • Ben we do not use the word crash. Emergency deep contains all the connotation needed to scare the shit out of one submariner. It will get you to 150 feet as quick as possible.

  • Yeah i agree, that was slow. looks like they blew the forward and aft trim tanks. but they did not really dive very fast. keeping in mind that the dive planes are responsible for most of the underwater dive. the hull is proabably a neutral bouyancy hull...and they just got the sub to skim the surface before going under..

  • dive planes are on the sail and until that's underwater it's slow going. Subs use power and planes to move up and down and use tanks to trim and maintain neutral.

  • that seemed to take ages

  • "Brandywine"

    "Brandywine"

    "BRANDYWINE??"

    RIP Brothers
