  • He's making an ink-grinding stone for calligraphy or brush-painting, (sumi-e) The ink comes in a stick and must be ground with water, against the stone to make ink. The liquid ink stays in the resovoir

  • What is it he made?

  • You could make anything out of that, if i was stranded and had this stone and tools i'had made armor and terrainsandals.

  • anyone else thinking of surf's up when the penguins were making the surfboards?

  • i could do that..........after lots of practice :p

  • Does anyone know which kind of stone it is he make it out of?

  • @lakristianla He is probably making it out of shale or slate. They are both a grey color and cleave very cleanly.

  • I lost count of how many times I've watched this... I love this video, it's amazing. I wonder though, what type of stone is that? It's very smooth and easy to carve.

  • What type of stone is that?

  • anata wa sugoi desu

  • man this is so soothing

  • ASMR trigger all the way!

  • Hermoso trabajo....

  • this is good

  • so...i really liked watching this....didn't know what it was...but i enjoyed watching it :)

  • love his outfit! haha traditional with a baseball cap XD

  • @emel60 its used for grinding the sumi (ink stick) into usable ink for sumi e and calligraphy. google sumi e and read the wikipidea article. its quite well put together.

  • @apachedrifter Will do sir, thanks.

  • @emel60 -bows- you are quite welcome-

  • I just noticed something..the stone is smaller in the beginning then suddenly got bigger..he change it?

  • is that slate?

  • What's that greyish liquid he uses at the end?

Fantastic to see old tradition crafting in action, btw ^^

Out here in the Netherlands we hardly do anything by hand anymore. The little we do is mainly for tourism :p

  • @RebeccaLessay I believe that that's the ink-which happens when you mix water on an inkstone, ink is made)

  • @Bloodykitten10 It's just water, he's cleaning the stone off. All that powder made from that chisel can't be left on the finished product. ;) Ink is made from grinding a stick of dry ink on the stone with a little water added, it doesn't come from the stone itself.

  • I would try my hardest to go to a festival dedicated to japanese arts, and no not anime, the craft making, I really enjoy watching the craftsmanship, all I have is a few pipe cleaners and maybe a feather. I'm jealous ♥

  • true CRAFTSMANSHIP THATS HOW SUMI INK IS BORN.

  • what is a ink stone?

  • @spekeman99 An ink stone are kind of like trays that are used in the countries of Japan and China to grind ink stinks for calligraphy or painting. The stones can be decorated with art or phrases. The stone istelf is usually made of slate or they are ceramic. The ceramic ink stones are usually labeled as immitations.

  • @spekeman99 for ink

  • how is this live?

  • This is a stunning video. Such a shame there are not hundreds of Chinese and Japanese Craftsmen displaying the way an Ink Stone is created. It's a tradition and a skill I am informed goes back thousands of years and yet where are all the videos of craftsmen carving these special stones???

Its a shame. I wish people would hunt down the artists who persue this as a craftsman's living. I would love to see these ornate stones on Video as well. Also, his surroundings and workshop interest me.

  • when it comes to that step of grinding, that when i bust out the ole router

  • ありがと! ;) for posting this! Arts and crafts should be mandatory in schools, so that they would be more commonly appreciated.

  • what the name of that type of stone???

  • and i bet all that talking is about last nights episode of their favorite sitcom.

  • how long can you press that chisel handle into your shoulder before you're begging for a cortisone shot? Cool stone, reminds me of soap stone.

  • @assytoob Do it for 40 year of your life and i bet you get used to it/develop a callous

  • is interesting how it uses his shoulder power to carve ...

  • What a polava just to make a tray?

  • @razor71927 Can you make one??

  • @BushiBato Yes, and without all that fuss!

  • @razor71927 Ya right.You have McDonald's Syndrome.

  • @BushiBato Don't go to Mcdonalds's. What does that mean anyway. Sounds like you have a syndrome of some kind!

  • @razor71927 You have alot to learn.get going before it's too late. Then again you sound real young.

  • That is truly captivating.

  • O.O AWSOME!

  • people like these are the ones hu deserve money, not pathetic footballers

  • @zohaibc Nor do the corporate vampires sucking the blood out of the world.

  • @zohaibc whether footballing or stone carving, both are artists in their own right.

  • @zohaibc I completely agree. THIS is true talent, not knocking people over and grabbing balls

  • cani know what he is makin and they use this for ?

  • He's making an Ink Stone, it's basicly a contaner for ink in use of Calligrphy and painting.

  • Especially, Ogatu is very beutiful town in summer. there is in "sanriku"seaside.

I often wacthed the roof of house made from this stone. It is very nice classical japanese style of house, in seaside.

  • what a soft stoe

  • in brazil we have a stone like that , it is called soap-stone. go on google and look for: obras de alejadinho , there are a lot of really nice sculptures made from that stone...made by a guy that had no fingers.. it's unbelievable...

  • The stone is kind of layered like slate but people call it that though it has, even if you rub it with your finger, a smell like flint.

My question is, are the traditional ancient stone mines still in use and supplying people like tbius with stone to continue the manufacture of these ink stones?

  • wat kind of stone is this???

    slate???

  • No, It's called ogatsu stone, and is pretty rare from what I've heard...

Just search "ogatsu ink stone" on google...

  • it makes me sleepy

  • This guy is Japanese but I guess this work had come from China.

  • good

  • Wow, it's really nice, I'd like to make an ink stone too :]

  • hu ??????????????????

  • Fantastic - I really enjoyed seeing this. Thank you for posting it. This is what YouTube should be used for!

  • @envirogeologist i agree

  • @envirogeologist exactly my thoughts!

  • wow!

  • Very fascinating. I wonder if soapstone can b used for ink stones.

  • it would not work well. soapstone is extremely soft, it would wear away and ink would spill out of the dish

  • @zapaman22 no but soapstone if used for some seals in use for Shodo/Shufa

  • I liked it too!

  • I had never thought about all the work these stones require to be done. Really interesting video. Next time I use my inkstone, I will look at it in a differente way. Thanks for posting and greetings from Spain.

  • Yes.... Ive heard that the higher end nd (understandably) more expensive ink stones can take up to 3 days to finish!

absolutely gorgeous creations though.... heirloom pieces.

  • Thanks for posting this! I found it fascinating!

  • That was a really cool video. Thanks for posting it!
