They saw red-herring planes that were flying in every direction and it's possible they saw the missile. It's not hard to understand if you can still think. A real plane crashes on impact. Not later. That's real-world physics. A real plane doesn't all the way through both ends of a reinforced steel and concrete mega-structure, including the central solid core, and then emerge with the fiber nosecone perfectly intact.
