  • My science teacher has been attempting to explain this to us since autumn. What took her a semester and a half took him four minutes. Time to enroll in online schooling.

  • Basically the first few topics of Scottish Standard grade Chemistry summarised in 4 minutes. Sitting here watching this going "OOH I KNOW THIS!" Should use this to revise for my exam in May lol.

  • i did that at school in year 8...

  • An Introduction to Chemistry, aka Crash Course: Bilogy, episode 0

  • College level? Silly americans... We were doing that in 10th grade (Czech Republic...)

  • @mikiquicna same in canada!

  • @leighia1 same in america. it was probably from when he went to college which was a while ago.

  • Umm....I learned all of this on Thursday in my Physical Science class........ Oh yeah, and I'm a freshman. But yet you still managed to clarify all of my questions and all in 4 minutes while it took my teacher an hour and I still had questions.

  • That's 4 weeks of chemistry class compressed into 4 minutes

And I think I learned more from this 4 minute video than the first 4 weeks of chemistry class

  • This is like the companion piece to Carbon is a Tramp. Hm, that would make a great shirt. Anyway, since carbon is a tramp, the comparison with Bella is quite accurate and amusing.

  • Do I spy a figurine of Spike Speigel?

  • If John and Hank were my teachers in High School, I would have done WAY better and I would have actually done my homework!

  • This sums up my entire first semester of chemistry.

  • THANK YOU! now im not going to be failing my 10th grade Chemistry Midterm.

  • ohh hank u make me feel so derp spmetimes

  • wrong dark matter which makes up most of the univers are not any element or atom

  • it this like the baby scishow?

  • THANK YOU HANK!!!!!

  • hank just taught me about atoms in 38 seconds while it took my class about 6 months to learn the exact same thing. go figure.

  • THANK YOU HANK <3

  • But... This was taught to me in EIGHTH GRADE! I HAVE BEEN GETTING COLLEGE CHEMISTRY SINCE THE LAST SEMESTER?!

  • 2:40 the most ironic chemical bond i think is when you have hydrogen and oxygen, both very flammable gases, but when you combine them, you get water, which puts out fires.

  • that sounds like 6th grade chemistry...

  • this actually took about an hour off of my studying for my chemistry final. thank you hank.

  • Well hello 8th grade Chem and 10th grade Chem o:

  • Yeah I definitely learned this all in middle school...

  • I was ok untill electrons started (40 seconds in)

  • I learned this in seventh grade but you taught it a lot quicker.

  • wait, that's freshman chemistry? we learned all of that in the 8th grade i think. except i thought atoms had 2, 8, 8, 8 for the numbers of orbiting electrons...

  • BELLA SWAN WHY MUST YOU FILL YOUR ORBITALS

the only thing I wondered while reading those books.

  • Uuuuugh I hate chemistry.

  • Thanks for the review of my first quarter of chem. Maybe I'll watch this again to study for my final in a few weeks...

  • i got the basic in just 4 minute..wow, thats a record..thanks @vlogbrothers

  • You just taught me more than my actual Chemistry teacher does... :P

  • My chemistry 101 final is in two days. And here I thought I was avoiding studying. Thanks for the review!

  • It's probably been noticed fifteen hundred times in these comments already, but "How can Bella fill her Edward-shaped hole?" Dear God. HA. HA. HA.

  • this makes me sooo happy because u said this is collage level im in 8th grade and im learning this! yay

  • This is college level? I learned it in 8th grade..

  • Yeahbuddy. Lewis structures ftw.

  • I like that there's a book behind Hank that's entitled "An Autobiography".

  • Hahaha. "Fill her Edward shaped hole". Lol.

  • watching this now so i can pass my chemistry test tommorrow

  • Within the first 33 seconds... I've learned more than my whole year of chemistry class. Dang it.

  • We did this in Bio... huh?

  • I knew all that stuff and I'm in eighth grade...

  • WE LOOOVE YOU!!!!!

  • Carbon is soooooo needy. :P

  • You just told me everything I learned in the first month of honors high school chem. In three minutes. Pretty epic.

  • I showed the vlogbrothers to my Chemistry teacher and now she shows Hank videos in class almost weekly. God I love being a TA.

  • My school taught this in eighth grade, and then expanded on that knowledge in freshman year, and so on and so forth. It is the foundation of basic chem knowledge.

  • @mackmatthew64 he needs to stay within the 4 minute time limit..

  • Umm yeah I feel very nerdy because I knew everything and I'm about half his age

  • I'm watching this so I can say I'm studying foe my chem test tomorrow. Yay for procrastination.

  • Be my Chem tutor?

  • Yaaaaay orbitals :D

  • Cool, this basically covered most of the things I'm gonna have on my test tomorrow!

  • You just reviewed my Science class. Thanks Hank :D

  • MORE HANK!!!!!! I WANT MORE!!!!

  • I freaking hate chemistry. But I like Hank.

  • 1st semester 9th grade honors science.

    DFTBA

  • wow. you just pwned my 10th grade chemistry teacher

  • I really wish I could have you for a chemistry teacher. I really do.

  • Carbon is not Bella! You almost ruined organic chemistry for me by that comparison, but then I remembered that characters from Twilight aren't made up of atoms at all, but of the devil.

  • that's college level chemistry? we did that at school in germany in years 8 and 9 (pupils age 13-15) :)

  • @hannah1111100 I thought the same thing... xD

  • gahhh!!! i hate chemistry!!! i just took it last year -.- i was very annoyed at my bad teacher...i really wish you were my teacher

  • i am so glad i found this. i have my final next week and i'm still struggling with the orbitals. you just made sense of what sounded like nonsense last week... i appreaciate it thank youuuuu :)

  • I learned just about all of this in 7th grade last year. Nice.

  • Everytime I read "Davos" I think it says "Davros" and I get excited...

  • This is what I learned in grade 9 academic science. But this way somehow makes it that much more awesome.

  • SCIENCE-Y things!

Thumbs up for Nerdfighteria University - Vlogbrothers would actually make better profs than 85% of the ones out there right now XD

  • and i only found this video...AFTER i successfully failed chemistry? lol

  • @AnnieReadsGood Successfully failed chemistry?

Were you trying to not pass it? o.O

  • @DanteVlogs THANK YOU for noticing that. I didnt :P i suppose if you fail chemistry to the point you get an "ungraded" paper, it is quite a successful fail? haha and no, i wasnt trying to fail, i dont think ive ever revised more for a subject in my life, i just seemed to get all the wrong questions :/ not a happy moment for Annie, not at all a happy moment... anyway! we're over it now and lets hope university dont mind that i am science bad on grounds that i am English good? lol

  • I learned all of that in 6th grade years ago. The the American school system, I have knowledge!

  • 2P2P2.

  • i now think my school is screwing me because i learned all this stuff in the 7th grade last year :((

  • I'll refer to this when I take chem next semester.

  • Hank, you just pwned my science teacher. Thank You!

  • i wish he tought my science class he makes it sound fun

  • I learned all of this and more in my high school sophomore chem class. It made me feel smart to immediately know what he was talking about :)

  • OH <3

  • This is college chemistry? Really? Wow, I learned this in the first couple of months of high school chemistry. Although my teacher was special and wanted us to succeed in college, I suppose it's not all that surprising that he gave us a solid groundwork. If he ever reads this, Thank You Mr. Pascucci!

  • Proud I new all this from A level Chemistry.

  • I learned all of this in my sophomore year in high school, and i'm not even in college yet. Thank you awesome chemistry teacher who could totally be a nerdfighter, and Hank of course.

  • i want an encore performance. if 4 minutes does half a semester of chemistry, can you do 4 more minutes? (i'll pay for it.) and can you do a 4-5 minute review of differential equations and calculus next?

  • hank you just reviewed my exam next week, at least the chemistry part :) thanks

  • My 7th grade Science teacher this year felt the need to teach this, repeating over and over again that it was college level stuff. Why she didn't just show this video is beyond me.

  • by far the 4 most constructive minutes in my life <3

  • Is this really college level stuff? I just learned this and I'm a sophomore! (in high school) I feel special. :)

  • How can bella fill her edward-shaped hole, OH dear.

  • Wow... I believe you just covered everything I learned in my Jr. year of high school... What madness is this?

  • Ohmaigawd THANK YOU

I want to take AP Bio next year, and I have to know some Chem first, and you saved me like five weeks of summer studying.

  • I really could have used this before my final last year!! Too bad I just discovered this now!!! :(

  • i like how i knew all of that before he started talking.

  • i have been taught the "normal" atom model (the one that hank was talking about in the video), but my philosophy teacher told us that we can't be sure if the electrons and and protons are really located in the atom as we think they are...

  • Ok I just learnt more than my chemistry teacher attempted to teach in one hour. I want Hank and Charlie to teach fun science!

  • This is exactaly what I just took a test on! Dangit! I found this one week to late. I could have used this as a study tool. :(

  • i am 14 and go to the german school in mexico, and I basicly know it all ( I am proud of myself) in german of course

  • We are in the middle of learning this in school I have to say you taught me more than my teacher did in four minutes then she did in 40:)

  • I have a horrible science teacher who won't teach us anything. You taught me more that he taught me in a year. Thank you.

  • I ment chemistry...I'd like to also say that I'm only 14

  • I'm in 7th grade and I knew most (all) of that (chenistry) and I don't even have chenistry...

  • I took chem in highschool for a year... you made more sense of this then my entire year of class.

  • Wow! You CAN be smart and awesome! NERDS FOREVER!!!!!

  • I would really rather call this "magic."

I'm with John. I has a frou-frou BFA and MFA in creative writing.

  • I love this! Thank you, Hank, for now I know what science I'm taking in 11th grade!

  • please come teach chemistry at our school. the teacher here is terrifying D:

  • did you really mean to say that at 1:28, or did it just come out randomly but anyway im sure all the creepers are going to have fun with that

  • Edward fills Bella's "Edward shaped hole" on a regular basis...

during creepy vampire rape sex. D:

  • Hank, thanks for helping me pass chemistry. My teacher sucks. You are awesome. and I thank you :)

  • The Red Cross have been "misappropriating" donated monies.Don't give 'em a penny.

  • I'm puting subtitles on this video and offering to my school!

Just imagine... Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini learning chemistry thanks to Hank (I mean, we do learn all of this among a lot of other stuff, but is awesome to watch)

  • This taught me more than 6 months of gnashing my teeth and tearing out my hair last year. Good God you're awesome.

  • please come teach at my school?

  • Where was this video when I was in high school? More importantly, why couldn't I find this video last semester in my Chemistry 121 Class?

  • explosive + poisonous = delicious ahh chemistry :D

  • That was pretty much my eighth grade?

  • I have a chemistry test tomorrow so..

    THANK YOU :D

  • you know, I am really glad I already had chemistry before I watched this. You are a good teacher, but learning something in four minutes that took a couple weeks for me is really confusing

  • You explained this better than my chemistry teacher.

  • I loved honors chemistry in 10th grade!! I had an A the entire year. And I vow to forever keep my composition notebook full of sloppily written chemistry notes!

  • I am in my first year of highschool science and I learned all this....but now I actually understand it :D

  • I just learned more in 4 minutes about chemistry than I have in 3 years of school.

  • Why aren't you teaching my Chem Class?

  • 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p6 6s2 4f14 5d10 6p6 7s2 5f14 6d10 7p6 6f14 7d10 AND 7f14! yes!!!

  • I wish you taught me Chemistry this year. That way I wouldn't have a 29% as my 3rd quarter grade average...

  • I wish you were my chem prof! I might actually learn something!

  • You know, I almost failed my high school chemistry course. I think if my teacher had shown this video, I would have done significantly better.

  • I learned this in 8th grade, and I am glad I did or else I would had never been able to keep up with him.

  • I just learned more about chemistry from this one video than an entire semester of chemistry class when I was in high school. Just goes to show how bad the high school system is in Canada, or anywhere for that matter.

  • @MsDesignDiva Oh dear o.o really? I'm extremely grateful then. I learned WAY more than this in the quebec english educational system (wow) although the teacher wasn't quite as energetic as Hank!

  • @Tiniere yea, my high school science class sucked, the students were super disruptive and my teacher was really boring and didn't care at all if the students actually learned anything. Like he was so boring that for the most part no one actually remembered anything that they did learn. so many people were doing things to be disruptive that by the time he had gotten done sending students to the principals and that sort of thing, class was practically over, we didn't learn much.

  • More please.

  • Have a look on "Kems Doku, NowTV". Kems rules!

  • Jeez... I just noticed. The curricula in science, math, and history repeat themselves in my school district. 3rd does the same as 6th, 4th and 7th, 5th and 8th, etc. I wish the children is my district would wisen up and finally learn it so we don't have to learn it again instead of learning new things. Oh, and Hank? I learned more in this four minutes than I have in my 9 years of schooling. Thank you.

  • @NintendoGuy99 Oh my god. I KNOW RIGHT! It's like there're insulting the intelligence of ALL American students.

  • @NintendoGuy99 I like Hank .. but there is no way you learned more in these 4 minutes than you did in 9 years of school. If so, then the blame is on your inability to learn when you are not infatuated with the person teaching you. Also, your curriculum goes into far greater detail the second time around than it did in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. (why would you blame the CHILDREN of your schools the curriculum , anyway???) Lastly, your lack of proofreading suggests it was not your school's fault.

  • John needs to be my english and history teacher, and Hank needs to be my science teacher.

  • Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay in the back!!!

  • If I had watched this at the start of 11th grade..

  • It all makes sense now! We learned like half of this in seventh grade (last year) but our science teacher wouldn't explain the rest because she thought we were too stupid to understand it, so there were all these holes in the lessons... THANK YOU HANK!

  • At the 2:30 second mark I had learned more than I had learned after two months of science class. By the end of the video, three months.

  • I'm gonna be a chemistry major and if this is what awaits me oh boy is it gonna be fun!! =D

  • Oh so its all bellas fault. cool , Im good with blaming her.

  • i'm seriously going to show this to my science teacher and make her show this in class.(:

  • A friend of mine gave the link to your video... because their English teacher showed it to them in class! I just thought you might like to know how your videos are being used in France! :D

  • Haha! I love chemistry now! ^^

  • Where were you when I did advanced chemistry in class 10!!!

  • infinitely more knowledge of chemistry? that means i knew nothing before! i am insulted!

  • please please please please please become my science teacher! goodness knows my school needs a better one

  • This video is a bit vague, but I definitely used it to study for midterms. Thanks Hank :)

  • You should know that you just taught me more Chemistry in 3 minutes than my college professor has taught me in what has so far been 6 hours of lecture. It helps that you have an American accent, of course.

  • WHERE WERE YOU WHEN MY TEACHER WAS TRYING TO TEACH ME ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATIONS?

  • "And they make salt" Love that clip XD

  • I've known this sence 8th grade...I was the only one who understood it in my class because I watched this video. Thank you Hank :)

  • Wait....I thought the electron shells went 2,8,8,18 :/

  • Bella wants her orbitals filled but Edward wants to wait for marriage.

So get to the patent office Bella and get your hol-- bitals filled.

  • Dangit, I just spent 16 weeks learning that!

  • I may have actually passes Chemistry in high school if you had been my teacher.

  • Slightly Sad Truth: Hank makes more sense than my AP Chemistry teacher. Thank you for helping me understand all of this just in time for finals. :)

  • Congratulations on your video,

I've also just completed a Chemistry Teaching Aid; a song to help students learn the Period Table.

    I'd appreciate if you'd take a look;

    youtube.com/watch?v=DwA7TDbDWs8

In the meantime, I've left positive feedback for your video; I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same for me if you like my song.

Keep up the good work, and thanks in advance for your mutual support.

    All the best,

    Whale3149

    "We've Just Crammed The Table"

  • I'm pretty sure you were better than my chemistry teacher in high school, the class I was forced to teach myself because my teacher was that bad...thank you.

  • Whooooooaaahh this makes me feel really dumb:( blech. I hate that. But I shall learn this eventually! I'm taking Chem next year:)

  • BE MY CHEMISTRY TEACHER PLEASE :(

  • I think i've lost an electron.

    Are you sure?

    Yes - i'm positive!

  • @SirTeeGeeEss Nerd joke nerd jokes! :D

  • @oohdear1397 Nerd jokes are the best type of jokes.

    Here's a couple:

Why do white bears dissolve faster than brown ones?

    Because they're polar.

    -

Poor little Johnny, we don't see him any more,

For what he thought was H2O was H2SO4.

  • I'm pretty sure I did this in s3 (age 14) so collage should be easy
