@RememberTheMemory0:55 Actually, the Icelandic poppy [Papaver nudicale] is not scarlet. The oriental poppy [Papaver orientale] is similar to the Iranian poppy [Papaver bracteatum.]
@TheInbornMechanics I'm pretty sure not. Only papaver somniferum family contain significant amounts of morphine. I've seen a few around in the UK, they don't grow naturally here, and it is ALWAYS opium poppies i see rather than any of the many other types. Quite legal as a garden flower here, and sold in garden centres. Unless you knew what you were looking for, you wouldn't even know they were opium poppies, it just looks like another garden flower. I recognise them as I grow them.
those aren't pictures of "oriental poppies" ie somniferum or the opium poppy, opium poppies dont have hair atop the seedpod, and their leaves are hairless!
Papaver somniferum is the poppy that prduces opium and it is not illegal to grow. Its illegal to extract the opium. I found a pack of hungarian blue poppies (Papaver somniferum) in with all other flower seed packs at a gardning store.
Papaver orientalis has two alkaloids which are molecularly similar to codeine, but the arrangement of atoms is such that the side effects resemble Strychnine poisoning rather than narcosis.(RE: Merck Index viz: Thebaine). Papaver somniferum is the Opium Poppy that has alkaloids with narcotic properties: Morphine, Codeine, Neopine. California poppy is known as Eschscholzia californica (Papaveraceae) It's alkaloids are: papaverine, sanguinarine, and protopine.
The person that was telling u about poppy's was wrong... there is about 4 different types of poppy that "were" illegal and they didn't produce heroin,,, they produced opium and opium is made into heroin so now u r informed correctly
I love the poppy for one specific reason ^^

@JyonasanVolkov
so the oriental is NOT the opium of somniferum type?
tpvalley 3 months ago
@tpvalley No, it dœs not contain any morphine/codeine alkaloids [at very minute amounts, if any.] But it sure is a beautiful flower for spring!

@sparklerbombg About 6-8 weeks, probably another 2 or 3 to finish flowering.
