I wonder why they stopped doing that.

By that, I mean the whole "4 can play off 1 game pack" thing.

I think you can really only do that with the Super Mario Advance series (Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Bros 3), Mario Kart Super Circuit and Game and Watch Gallery 4.

I also have Mortal Kombat Advance and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past/Four Swords but those require multiple game packs.

I can see doing it with Zelda, but why Mortal Kombat?

It used to be that you needed like at least one connect  cable to connect on the first GBA and Second GBA, if you had four, then you needed four cables.
