I am not agreeing with this..Yes, depression & anxiety may be hereditary..but not really..starving causes depression,anxiety..the brain gets starved of nutrients. AND we DO make choices.. in how we deal with our anxiety and depression..It's not like it just happens bc your parent had it..that oh..now I have anorexia..No.. it is because of the choices you have made. This was kind of ridiculous theory.
This is a concept that I find really helpful in understanding my experience; eating disorders are not always about body image; its a way to suppress feelings of anxiety. For some people their experience of the disorder really is "nothing to do with body image", its not about trying to achieve the Hollywood ideal. Usually the reporting focuses on teens who are under peer pressure to be thin. It is refreshing to hear a report that focuses on a different facet of this disease.
I have had the priveledge to have met both Heather and Erin. Both are beautiful, caring and driven to beat this insidious disorder. I wish them both health and recover!
