I'm pretty sure Whitehaven was where the name originated but it wasn't as much of an insult as it is now. It simply implied that you worked the pits as jam was one of the few things you could still taste on your butties with a nose full of coal dust they usually opted for large crusts so you had something to hold without getting your filthy hands all over the bread. The word marra also comes from the mines too as in someone who is a close to you as your bone marrow. You're welcome.
