I rediscovered this number when I heard Kurt Elling's version as "Tanya Jean" in the early 1990's with vocals. Amazing how Elling matched the original masterpiece by Byrd and Gordon! (Listen to Ellings vocalese version if you have not- There is a great live version in Youtube that Elling performed in Paris) - Mark Seibold, Retired IT Tech, Artist-Astronomy Educator, Portland Oregon
Can never hear 'Tanya' too many times. It always sounds fresh. Dexter Gordon's best. Wore that vinyl out. This is on my 'bucket list' of music for my children to remember me by. Thanks for posting.
Those were the days...good music all day, everyday. Maybe Youtube can help more people hear really good music as efforlessly as we did back in the day.
Perhaps the greatest single performance ever by Mr. Long Tall himself, Dexter Gordon. The bass playing of NHO on this tune was iconic. Never has a groove been more memorable and contagious. Art Taylor, Kenny Drew and Donald Byrd keep up admirably. I'm hard pressed to remember a more stirring and satisfying showing from Dex.
Wow - I have the CD from this album, and it is one of the 10 best jazz LPs that I've ever owned, without a doubt. "Tanya" is a big reason why that is true, too!
It has an infectious rhythm to it, and Donald Byrd's trumpet adds a great deal to the "frontporch swinging" of Long, Tall Dexter (my favorite tenor man, by far). N-HOP, Kenny Drew & Art Taylor form quite possibly the finest rhythm section on ANY record! They've all got me rockin' back 'n' forth right now, 6 minutes into the tune...
First version of this that I heard was the Kurt Elling take. This is a brilliant version, but to me, Kurt's is so much more empassioned and soulful.
Love em both though.

This album, and particularly this track, was a revelation for me. It's one of those iconic performances that defines cool jazz for me.

God bless Dexter for this piece not to mention Donald Byrd and the rest of the cats. I first heard this piece on the Jazz documentary by Ken Burns.
