very natural, beautiful sound! though his italian language isn´t really interesting (the beginning of the aria). who cares about the language?! this sound is unique! Bravissimo!!!
Actually it is from Act II but the singing is still great. His greatest role thoughin my opinion is that of Rodrigo in Don Carlos. He is fantastic in that particularly the death aria. I saw him singing that role in Vienna and he was amazing.
5:30 GermontDunque invano trovato t'avro'! No, non udrai rimproveri; Copriam d'oblio il passato; L'amor che m'ha guidato, Sa tutto perdonar. Vieni, i tuoi cari in giubilo Con me rivedi ancora: A chi peno' finora Tal gioia non negar. Un padre ed una suora T'affretta a consolar.
@Baritime Um.. he's a verdi voice.. so ofcourse he's going to play fatherly roles haha But his real age isn't the one depicted at cardiff.. he's actually older :( sad :( I agree
@Baritime He was only 42 when he sang this in 2004. He was born in 1962. It is the make-up which makes him look older. I sat next to him and his wife at Covent Garden in 2006 and he doesn't look at all old. The hair of course is prematurely white but he doesn't look at old old close up. And he is very nice to talk to as well. I also saw him singing Rigoletto and of course the make-up makes him look pretty awful but it is the role. the voice though is miraculously velvety and gorgeous.
@Ariadne7710 it reasuring that along with his gift and talent he is also kind. I just want him to never age so that when I grow to be 60, he will still be 42, and never lose this beautiful timbre. I know quite well that he is not actually old.
This is the Royal House Covent Garden production. A Decca DVD with Angela Gheorghiu, Frank Lopardo, and Leo Nucci of this production is available. Flemming has also also starred in this production but im not sure it's available on DVD yet or will be.
I have eyes to see and ears to hear - and this is a great baritone demonstrating his art as Germont. DH is among a handful of superb baritones that excell in Verdian operas. Bravo.

Pero que te pasa con este hombre. No te hizo caso en algun momento de tu vida. Lo tuyo es fijación sexual no-correspondida. A mi me gusta, aun que el Germont no seria su mejor papel, la verdad.

Incredible singing that I had the pleasure to listen to recently at Covent Garden London.

His voice has all the beauty of lyric baritone and enough dramatism for singing Verdi perfectly

The sea and soil of Provence who has erased them from your heart
From your native, fulsome sun what destiny stole you away
Oh, remember in your sorrow that joy glowed on you
and that only there peace can yet shine upon you
God has guided me
Ah your old father, you don't know how much he has suffered
With you far away, with misery has his house become full of
But if in the end I find you again, if hope did not fail within me,
if the voice of honour didn't become silenced in you,
God has heard me

This is the most beautiful rendition of this aria... DH is superb and the right age for the role. I would hate to be the tenor singing with him.

Dedicated to those who believe DH's voice isn't suited to Verdi repertoire

I don't like this... the singing is superb, but the fact that he's playing fatherly roles means he's getting older, and i don't like that thought.

True, i should've been clearer, I meant characters like Germont, who are specifically old. He's starting to look the part too....

very strange singing /log lines are not enough/the voice to dark and ' back '/needs more high resonance and less work

This was from Cagliari, Italy with tenor Giuseppe Filianoti.
I like this performance because he sung extended cavaletta part which normally omitted. Wonderful singing!
Also he made himself look older and act well as senior Germont.
I have this DVD and enjoying it very much.

What is this?
the siberian failure again!!!
What is him attempting to do?
to conquer the young poor violetta for him...as he uses to conquer every human being whom outdares to cross his way?
He 's a satanic man,believe me...

He does seem to rub you the wrong way, doesn't he? (I am of the other persuasion...I'm going to Chicago next month to hear sing Onegin.)
Phrasing seems a bit slushy here in the beginning, but that's the fault of whoever's conducting.
