Does anyone know if this whole game is available on You-Tube or where I could find it? I missed the game as and as a Canuck have never forgiven myself!!
Wow, cowardly play by Macoun on Gelinas. I was out of Canada for this series, so it's the first time I've seen the three crosschecks that he laid on the head of Gelinas.
I hope Macoun eventually got his because he did a lot to earn it over the years in Calgary and Toronto. Classic thug. Could have been a Flyer.
Ah, the Leafs and Maple Leaf Gardens. Perhaps the only NHL team ever investigated for child molestation and which produced actual convictions. And it's said that Ballard, that shameless sob actually knew about it and might have molested kids himself.
R.I.P. Peter Zezel, this game's overtime goal scorer, who died today (May 26, 2009) in Toronto. Zez played four quality seasons in Toronto, and finshed his career in 1999 after a pair of partial seasons in Vancouver.
I know Flyers fans loved him during his tenure in Philly, and we sure dug him here in Toronto.
interesting to see how small the goal pads were back then compared to now. and the goalies still stopped a ton of shots, great athletes. the pads need to be way smaller now
yeah. back then, with the small pads and standup style, stats like GAA and save percentage were a little lower than now. i think it should go back to that too since it would force goalies to actually try. goalies like potvin, curtis joseph and hextall and grant fuhr were great goalies back in that era when the standards for goalies was like that. like that
i was in the middle of stroking off the second Vancouver scored the OT winner in game 5. I was watching a porno during the intermission. I was so pissed I couldnt' even finish.
but toronto had the option of a 2-3-2 series or 2-2-1-1-1 they (toronto) thought with all the travel from toronto to vancouver it would be benifial to take the 2-3-2 which we all know backfired
Because of the 2-3-2 format(team with advantage gets Games 1 and 2,and the lower-seeded team gets to play on their own rink Games 3,4 and 5.The higher-seeded team gets the last two(Games 6 and 7)
This format was used mostly in the 1994 Western Conference playoffs if I recall correctly.
1994 playoffs had a weird rule. If a Central Division team (Toronto, Detroit, etc.) was playing a Pacific division (San Jose, Vancouver, etc.)team, the team with the higher ranking could actually choose which format they wanted, be it 2-2-1-1-1 or 2-3-2. Every series that could have had this option the better team used the 2-3-2 (4 series overall) and the higher ranking team actually went 1-3 in those series(Leafs beating the Sharks in 7 was the only win). Stanley Cup format remained the same.
There were only 12 teams in the Western Conference and 14 in the East. If Toronto were in the east only 3 west teams would miss and that's too little.
On the radio, Tom Larscheid yelled, "That's bull$hit!" for the Macoun hit on Gelinas. This game was the debut of the NetCam. There was only one of them, so it wasn't available to the video replay officials, and it cost the Canucks a goal.
It was a great series. Closer really than the 4-1 result. Canucks rocked that year and McLean and Linden were gods. Should have won the cup - just like the Leafs should have won the year before. Stupid Gretzky. Go Leafs, go Nucks! Boo Habs! (kidding).
you're right, it was close, and it wouldve been a whole new series if toronto had scored to win game 5 in overtime...if i'm not mistaken, toronto wouldve had home ice in both game 6 and 7 (3,4,5 were all in vancouver to reduce the travelling i believe). it wouldve been very interesting to see if toronto couldve taken advantage of that home ice but unfortunately it didnt get to that point. this playoff run was much more of a disappointment compared to the heartbreak of the previous year vs LA
Amazing how much punishment Gelinas took and what Macoun gave to a couple canucks. If NBC broadcast games from this era just to fool the general public, the NHL would have much better ratings.
Vancouver loses game 1 then Toronto falls apart the next four games as Kirk McLean shuts them out in back to back games..give credit to Vancouver, they played well.

Yea that was really dumb having the Leafs in the Western (or Campbell) conference when Ontario is right above NY and Mass.

The Leafs were in the Western Conference (prior to that, the Campbell Conference) up until 1998/99, when they switched to the East.

The only hockey fans I feel sorry for more than 'nucks fans are Leafs fans. Maybe if they all stopped loving hockey so much they would get a winner

I remember this series, I thought for sure the Leafs were going to win, but Vancouver was a little too big and Kirk McLean was on fire that year.

how is this the conference final? leafs and canucks are in different conferences.

At the time, the Leafs were (for some odd reason unknown) in the Western Conference. The Leafs were put in the Eastern Conference in 1999.
