If you wanted to make a perfect race horse....it would be molded after Secretariat. Speed....Power.....Acceleration.....and Endurance, There will never be another one like "Big Red".After a painful battle with Laminitus....
Secretariat was humanely euthanized on Oct. 4, 1989. He was 19.
He didn't look that bad there :\ i mean i know he is dead now nothing you can do but as far as lami goes i have seen worse and the horse has been fine with worse
Oh, Secretariat. We'll miss you. You would have kicked the asses of every supposed 'Best Horse Ever' if given the chance. You were a great racehorse, and I'm surprised you didn't give 100,000 people heart attacks when you won the Preakness by 31 lengths. R.I.P to the greatest horse I have ever seen
like this...but very sad. So heartbreaking that Secretarial had to be a victim or laminitis. Such a painful end for such a great horse. So sad that he did not have the luxury of running one more time before he died, as he did so well in his prime.
Oh wow. Poor Secretariat, you could tell he was really hurting. I saw him for the last time in June, 1989, just about four months before he died. I can barely look at the video and the pics I took, but really glad I have them. RIP Big Red. You were the BEST!
I understand that Secratariate was a great horse, but, I would like to know where does Seabiscuit stand to you....I do understand that they are in two different eras....just looking for some feedback, I do not claim to know anything about horses or horse racing, just happen to be watching the movie Seabiscuit and wanted to know what horse enthusiasts thought...thank you.
@kwynder90 Seabiscuit would not have been any competition to Secretariat. At all. None. Seabiscuit was a good horse but not what I would consider one of the 'greats.' Secretariat was quite possibly the greatest there's ever been..
@kwynder90 I worked on the tracks from the time I was 16 until I was in my late 20's. I held trainer's license in 3 states when I left the industry. I actually exercised horses for Meadows (not Big Red, only Turcotte rode him). I've studied horses back to Man O' War. Seabiscuit was an awesome little horse, but neither he nor War Admiral could hold a candle to Secretariat. Secretariat is a once in a lifetime horse. None of us will ever see a horse like him again.
I am a huge sports fan im crazy about it, but im not into horse racing, Ive witnessed moments in sports history, Maradona, in world cups, Jorden in basketball, Senna in F1, Peyton Manning in the NFL. Secratariat is the most amazing Being ive ever seen I was Not even born when Scretariat Won this Race. There is something about this horse that really touches my heart.
I cried too, Cant help but be sad that I missed my one opportunity to see him, and then He got put down, later that year, Guess I'll just have to wait till I get to Heaven to see him!!!!
My mares great (x4) is secertait twice he was bred in to her, twice then her great (x5) is bold ruler bred in to he three times no joke :) she is now 11
Secretariat is my God on Earth. We'll never see any man or horse again that was the "perfect 10". He had it all. God made perfection a horse...not a man. TG we got to see it once.
And what's interesting is that NO man or horse has ever duplicated his feat of increasing his speed throughout an entire race to break a track record. NO ONE in history! Just Secretariat:-)
I'm glad I got to enjoy the impact he had on all of us in 1973:-) No one can surpass him even 39 yrs. later..never will:-)
i have ocean one a great great grandson of big red with 600 babies jus about everyone has a desendant of this great horse!! ocean one is the most kind hearted sweetheart truly a loving gene in the super horse bloodline
I am not a horse person, but I do love nature and animals. I never thought a horse story (Disney Movie "Secratariat") would pull at my heart strings but this one took the cake! What a story of SPIRIT!!!! Beauty!!!! and of teamwork between owner, trainer, jockey and horse!
@HarveyMyBaby As I replied to someone below. I worked on the tracks and saw every race Big Red ever ran. I miss seeing him run even today. The movie brought back a lot of memories. I had 3 partners that actually purchased one of his foals. Nice horse, but he definitely wasn't his daddy. Red was just one of the genetic miracles that happens once in a blue moon. It's really too bad that he couldn't have produced a foal that was as good. One Derby winner is all there was.
Hello. I almost didn't watch because I prefer beginnings to endings. However, I'm glad I did. I can see now that just before he passed, Secretariat was still able to run & romp a bit. He didn't spend his final days just lying about in pain. Wonderful film. THANK YOU FOR POSTING.
@elliebeautylover - Hello. You're lucky. We have neighbors whose children ride at a stable which housed one of Secretariat's Great Grandsons. They sold him to another family about 90 minutes away before we could visit. But, when we were next in his new hometown area, his owner graciously met us at the stables to show him to us. He's got the reddish color & large hind quarters like his great-grand-sire. Best Wishes to you and your equine treasure. *Northern Dancer was special, also.
@elliebeautylover - Hello. No worries. The "local" Secretariat offspring no longer races and we wouldn't care if he never had. We just found it thrilling to be in the presence of a Big Red descendant. I read that many of Secretariat's children & grandchildren became champion show jumpers (is it those extra muscular hind legs?) I'm just an observer; never been on a horse in my life. Anyway, Good Luck to you in your jumping career.
aw next to his dad :( what a beautiful boy i cried like a baby watching this vide. One part in this vid when his handler let him lose took my breath away :'( why couldn't he stay with us a little while longer?
@TheExoticAnimal Everytime I think of this I cry, I cried all weekend, I hate that he died from something that he loved to do so much, run and run far away from the others, my heart has been in my throat all week. What an amazing beautiful miracle of life, Michele.
OMG, I didn't realize how he died. He was my hero, as much as I love Zenyatta, this big, beautiful stallion was the most amazing animal I ever laid my eyes on. I remember watching the Triple Crown where he won all, and what a show he put on, I watched it with my Dad and sadly I lost him years ago too. Thank you for this video, he was a miracle, Michele.
Secretariat tested positive for illegal Bute and anabolic steriods after the 1973 Belmont, but the New York racing association kept it covered up better than Watergate
He's so beautiful. A lady I board my horse with owns one of his grandsons. He's identical to Big Red especially in those lasts moments of the video where he's let loose.
@Montly99 Yes, he got laminitis. As I recall, he was recovering from one bout, and suddenly was struck with a second, very severe case in all four feet. Poor guy.
Poor guy..he gave everything he had in every race. You could tell he was in pain in that video, but just wanted to please. What a true gentleman.Run on in Heaven's green, endless fields and drink from its sweet waters. Thank you for giving yourself to us for a little while.Lots of apples and carrots to ya!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this. I was sobbing. I love him so much. I saw him once, but the negatives were lost in a flood. I loved seeing this so much I can't tell you. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
@HopiRaven - What a pleasure to read heart felt emotional responses such as your unparalleled moving words. Nice to know there are a myriad of people that remember "Big Red" in the manner you have so eloquently stated. God Bless SEC forever!
I love Secretariat!!! He is my horse hero!!!! I have researched him so many time his info gets stuck to my head!!! He will always be in my heart!!! May the great Secretariat lay in Heaven running all he wants!!!! :)
@catfish1260 - He's beyond help. He'll wind up in prison one day for malesting a 10 year-old. He has no class whatsoever, even coming over to this ultra-sad video to post his crap.
@Dannykeith46 It's a shame. It's a great video. I wish the person who posted it would remove the volgarity and block the offending person. It can't be shared with the horse related youth group here in NY because of it.
I was at the Ky Horse Park ten some years ago.I was reading stuff in the museum there and the vets were crying when they put Big Red down.Later I read they didn't even bother to weigh his huge heart during the autopsy.
he was such a great horse. I remember when i heard my first 'Secretariat Story' from my grandpa, when he saw him at the Belmont. He kept his betting ticket, and has it framed among all his golfing stuff. I wish I could have met this wonderful creature we call Secretariat. But I know he is in a better place. He's running with the greats: Ruffian, Seabiscuit, Phar Lap, Eight Bells, and dozens more! Keep on runnin'!
everyone is fighting over an animal who is at peace and not with us anymore for quite sometime, everyone is entitled to there own "opinion" there no sense in arguing about it, very pathetic and childish. go argue about the Yankees being on sterioids that's more arguable! LOL
when i watched this i cant help but cry. as i used to own his great great grandson befor he had to be put down as he had a brain tumer. i do miss him so much not a day goes bye when i dont think of leo a splitting image of secreteriat no horses can ever replace him.
He weighed 1175 lbs in his prime and 1200 when he died. If he only had a 2" penis how did he sire over 600 times? Your a fool go run for government natural liar.
I missed the opportunity to do what you did by 3 months. We were living in washington state & moved back home which wasn't that far from where Secretariat lived- I hadn't heard that he had died & was all exited that I'd finally have the oppurtunity to see him till an old friend told us he had died (I got very upset & cried) so I THANK you for this video! The is one moment in the video at the end I would like to try to use to make a painting of him. May I use that shot for my painting?
Why is it that some people have to find fault, or error, when talking about one of the greatest horses in history? This is the best video of Secretariat I have ever seen. He was not just a racehorse. He was a superior example of his breed. Let it go! Open your minds to the horse he was. Doesn't matter where he was from, or who owned him, he was a champion!
@MsShoosh1 - Well said my good friend. These pathetic losers have nothing better to do than trash talk and make up crap about one of the most incredible athletes ever. SEcretariat's accomplishments are so breathtaking, anti-SEC losers need to say ANYTHING to discount them. God bless the memory of this wonderful animal!
@SecretariatOnSteriod ....you're pretty much like a parrot then, just repeat what you hear....you don't even know what steroids are administered to racehorses or how often.....or the reason....so why don't you start out the new year the right way by hanging yourself
@SecretariatOnSteroid Secretariat was not on steroids! If he was his heart wouldn't have been so perfect. He had a larger heart than normal thoroughbreds so he could gallop at great speeds. I really don't care about what some guy said cuz it's false and all lies! These big hearts date back to a stallion called Eclipes and he had a large heart. Then the gene got passed to to all of his daughters and eventually Secretariat got it!
@HorsesRcul Don't worry. Andy Beyer never said Secretariat was given drugs. He has nothing but praise for that horse, and gave him a BSF (Beyer Speed Figure) of 139 for the Belmont - the highest he ever gave to any horse. That piece of garbage troll is on many Sec vids under different usernames claiming Beyer said this nonsese, without backing up his claims or providing links. Beyer loved Secretariat.
@SecretariatOnSteriod ...Hey Idiot, Laminitis was the reason he had to be put down....you don't even know which end of the horse the oats go in....stick to an animals you're familiar with....gerbils.
I will never forget the 1st time I saw Secratariat. I was in high school. It was Derby Day and I was watching the TV. They were showing the film of him getting a bath and they just happen to get a good shot of him standing. My eyes popped & I stood up pointed at the TV and shouted "THATS the next triple crown winner!" I watched every triple crown race knowing he would win. No horse has had that effect on me since. Not even close! I just looked at him and got chills.
@SecretariatOnSteriod - SEC WOULD HAVE CRUSHED PHAR LAP...THAT''s ALL I HAVE TO SAY! Don't ever compare your Australian trash to Secretariat...not even close!
@SecretariatOnSteriod - You are a complete idiot! Secretariat died of LAMANITIS - NOT AN ENLRAGED HEART. Also, everything you stated is absolute bullshit because if you knew anything about steroids, you would know once you stop taking them, body mass shrinks and muscle athrophy sets in. If SEC was taking steroids when he raced, after he retired there would be NO NEED to take them any longer which means his heart would NOT have been 22 lbs! You need to learn how to lie idiot!
@SecretariatOnSteriod Secreatariat had a NATURALLY larger than average heart, which has been demonstrated to be passed down genetically through the mare (female line). His big heart had NOTHING to do with steroids, as DannyKeith46 also pointed out " If Secretariat was on illegal steroids, he would have failed many of the saliva tests conducted after each race" Also if he'd been on steroids that would have been discovered during his autopsy. His heart was NOT UNaturally "enlarged"
@EquineDreams - Don't waste your time responding to this complete idiot! He totally disrespects this heart wrenching video and is a disgrace to humanity!
It's been a while (2004) since I read Lance Armstrong's book titled "It's Not About The Bike" but I think that Mr. Armstrong has a similar condition which enables him to get more oxygen into his lungs and muscles than other humans, which helped him ride faster. Rare, but natural benefit to athletes lucky enough to have it.
@Beachrunner333 I was quoting DannyKeith. I believe they also do urine tests. But I'm going to take His advice and not respond to you anymore. I own the NOVA documentary on Secretariat. I suggest you watch it.
@EquineDreams - Post race, horses are subject to saliva tests to check for illegal substances. In fact, AFTER the belmont stakes , Dave Anderson from the New York Times quoted in his column the following statement from a bystander as they checked SEC's saliva: "to think they are treating him just like any other horse"! CASE CLOSED...anyone who knows anything about race horsing should know this is standard post-race procedure. Believe me - "SecretariatonSteroids" knows!
@Beachrunner333 - Post race "saliva tests" were definitely used in the 70's and prior. In the late 70's/80's they did change over to simple urine tests. Sorry for the confusion. Secretariat had saliva tests performed after EACH of his TC wins - that is a fact!
@SecretariatOnSteriod Andrew Beyer is an IDIOT.He was a sports writer for the Washington Post that got lucky, and won a handicapping contest.Since then everyone refers to him as some horse racing god.
@bigedz80 But the thing is Andy Beyer never stated that Secretariat was on steroids. He has always praised this horse, describing his athleticism as "unmistakable". He even went back to Secretariat's Belmont (after perfecting his BSF system) and gave him a 139 Beyer Speed Figure - the highest ever recorded by a huge margin. That monkey troll below is just trying to upset people - you notice how he never provides links so we can read Beyer's alleged "steroid" remarks?
@BigPetrov - Right On! Andy Beyer was one of Secretariat's BIGGEST fans. Isn't it pathetic the trash people will post to knock the greatest horse ever...jealousy is the root of all evil!
@SecretariatOnSteriod - Why do you have to post this absolute trash on such a touching video. If Secretariat was on illegal steroids, he would have failed many of the saliva tests conducted after each race. Another pathetic statement from a complete and frustrated idiot!
A very touching video, thanks. I remember watching Secretariat run when I was a teenager. Belmont was absolutely the most exciting race in recorded history. I very seriously doubt there will ever be a horse this fine. I'm delighted I was here to see him run.
this footage is breathtaking.the movie blew me away and ever since ive known of this horse he has left a mark on my heart R.I.P Big red you;ll forever remain the greatest racehorse there was
@midatlanticcycle - If this doesn't put a "lump in your troat", nothing will. Unquestionably, one of the most heart felt videos you will ever see for the greatest race horse who ever graced the planet!
I would of been honored to stand in the presence of that horse. He is a legend and truly God's finest creation. Unique and rare, he was truly a beauty and left a mark on my heart. Your legacy will always be remembered. #1 horse there will never be another. Rest in peace, and run free in heaven.
@329sr Just imagine that when we get to heaven we will get to pet Secretariat and maybe even ride him. How awesome will that be? You can bet your favorite cowboy boots that Jesus is taking a ride on him anytime he pleases, after all he was one of His greatest creations, and He so graciously gave him to us to enjoy for a time just so He could see the smiles on our faces, and the joy in our hearts.
@JesusLivesandRules that would be amazing! i want to see where he is buried, he is the only horse to be buried full body.. just to be near him would be enough for me, i was only 5 when he was put down, but naturally i knew nothing about him! i wish i could of been able to see him, all horses are stunning but Secretariat was one of a kind!
@329sr Actually several horses are buried full body all of the time. The task is not that great since the backhoe was invented. Secretariat has a Still Standing World Record in the 1973 Kentucky Derby: see his history here: newworldencyclopedia org entry Secretariat pacing a backslash in between the words org entry and Secretariat
Uh, "cheesy" buddy! I have a life, and I am no Troll. I am a horse person, not so much racehorses, but I remember this guy. Secretariat was incredible! YouTube is giving me the footage that I would never see. Someone out there is posting incrediable stuff. If you hate it so much, why are you commenting? You are watching just like everyone else, If you do not like YouTube, don't watch! I like the relavent comments from real people. If you don't, go away, and stop wasting space!

@Dannykeith46 It's a shame. It's a great video. I wish the person who posted it would remove the volgarity and block the offending person. It can't be shared with the horse related youth group here in NY because of it.

he was such a great horse.

EquineDreams 2 months ago
Why is it that some people have to find fault, or error, when talking about one of the greatest horses in history? This is the best video of Secretariat I have ever seen. He was not just a racehorse. He was a superior example of his breed. Let it go! Open your minds to the horse he was. Doesn't matter where he was from, or who owned him, he was a champion!
MsShoosh1 2 months ago
@MsShoosh1 - Well said my good friend. These pathetic losers have nothing better to do than trash talk and make up crap about one of the most incredible athletes ever. @SecretariatOnSteriod ...ok, Sec was on steroids...if it makes you feel better....maybe you need to juice....you scrawny armed maggot
Beachrunner333 2 months ago
@SecretariatOnSteriod ....you're pretty much like a parrot then, just repeat what you hear....you don't even know what steroids are administered to racehorses or how often.....or the reason....so why don't you start out the new year the right way by hanging yourself
Beachrunner333 2 months ago
@SecretariatOnSteroid Secretariat was not on steroids! If he was his heart wouldn't have been so perfect. He had a larger heart than normal thoroughbreds so he could gallop at great speeds. I really don't care about what some guy said cuz it's false and all lies! These big hearts date back to a stallion called Eclipes and he had a large heart. Then the gene got passed to to all of his daughters and eventually Secretariat got it!
HorsesRcul 2 months ago
@HorsesRcul Don't worry. Andy Beyer never said Secretariat was given drugs. He has nothing but praise for that horse, and gave him a BSF (Beyer Speed Figure) of 139 for the Belmont - the highest he ever gave to any horse. That piece of garbage troll is on many Sec vids under different usernames claiming Beyer said this nonsese, without backing up his claims or providing links. Beyer loved Secretariat.

Beachrunner333 2 months ago
I will never forget the 1st time I saw Secratariat. I was in high school. It was Derby Day and I was watching the TV. They were showing the film of him getting a bath and they just happen to get a good shot of him standing. My eyes popped & I stood up pointed at the TV and shouted "THATS the next triple crown winner!" I watched every triple crown race knowing he would win. No horse has had that effect on me since. Not even close! I just looked at him and got chills.

greatest horse!!! i <3 secretariat!!!!!!!
guccigirl415 2 months ago
@SecretariatOnSteriod - You are a complete idiot! Secretariat died of LAMANITIS - NOT AN ENLRAGED HEART. Also, everything you stated is absolute bullshit because if you knew anything about steroids, you would know once you stop taking them, body mass shrinks and muscle athrophy sets in. If SEC was taking steroids when he raced, after he retired there would be NO NEED to take them any longer which means his heart would NOT have been 22 lbs! You need to learn how to lie idiot!
Dannykeith46 2 months ago
@SecretariatOnSteriod Secreatariat had a NATURALLY larger than average heart, which has been demonstrated to be passed down genetically through the mare (female line). His big heart had NOTHING to do with steroids, as DannyKeith46 also pointed out " If Secretariat was on illegal steroids, he would have failed many of the saliva tests conducted after each race" Also if he'd been on steroids that would have been discovered during his autopsy. His heart was NOT UNaturally "enlarged"
EquineDreams 2 months ago
@EquineDreams - Don't waste your time responding to this complete idiot! He totally disrespects this heart wrenching video and is a disgrace to humanity!
Dannykeith46 2 months ago
@EquineDreams
L85S87C90 2 months ago
@EquineDreams ...Saliva tests??? What the hell are you talking about??....How about urine tests...
Beachrunner333 2 months ago
@Beachrunner333 I was quoting DannyKeith. I believe they also do urine tests. But I'm going to take His advice and not respond to you anymore. I own the NOVA documentary on Secretariat. I suggest you watch it.
EquineDreams 2 months ago
@EquineDreams - Post race, horses are subject to saliva tests to check for illegal substances. In fact, AFTER the belmont stakes , Dave Anderson from the New York Times quoted in his column the following statement from a bystander as they checked SEC's saliva: "to think they are treating him just like any other horse"! CASE CLOSED...anyone who knows anything about race horsing should know this is standard post-race procedure. Believe me - "SecretariatonSteroids" knows!
Dannykeith46 2 months ago
@Dannykeith46 Never in 32 years have I seen them check saliva...even though it's called the "spit box"..they always catch the urine in a cup.
Beachrunner333 2 months ago
@Beachrunner333 - Post race "saliva tests" were definitely used in the 70's and prior. In the late 70's/80's they did change over to simple urine tests. Sorry for the confusion. Secretariat had saliva tests performed after EACH of his TC wins - that is a fact!

@SecretariatOnSteriod Andrew Beyer is an IDIOT.He was a sports writer for the Washington Post that got lucky, and won a handicapping contest.Since then everyone refers to him as some horse racing god.
bigedz80 2 months ago
@bigedz80 But the thing is Andy Beyer never stated that Secretariat was on steroids. He has always praised this horse, describing his athleticism as "unmistakable". He even went back to Secretariat's Belmont (after perfecting his BSF system) and gave him a 139 Beyer Speed Figure - the highest ever recorded by a huge margin. That monkey troll below is just trying to upset people - you notice how he never provides links so we can read Beyer's alleged "steroid" remarks?
BigPetrov 2 months ago
@BigPetrov - Right On! Andy Beyer was one of Secretariat's BIGGEST fans. Isn't it pathetic the trash people will post to knock the greatest horse ever...jealousy is the root of all evil!
Dannykeith46 2 months ago
@SecretariatOnSteriod - Why do you have to post this absolute trash on such a touching video. If Secretariat was on illegal steroids, he would have failed many of the saliva tests conducted after each race. Another pathetic statement from a complete and frustrated idiot!
Dannykeith46 2 months ago
@Dannykeith46 ....never have I seen them do a saliva test after a race and I've been around racing for 32 years....they collect urine.

@329sr Actually several horses are buried full body all of the time. The task is not that great since the backhoe was invented.
