  • I'm raging I wasn't born a decade earlier so I could enjoy the 80s :(

  • when i came across the band title, I thought it would be a hard metal female gothic band lol, but the two are pretty cool lol

  • Sunday night penny a mixed drink/ 25 cent shots at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit. We would come over from U of W with a roll of pennies and a roll of quarters. Everything from the Beastie Boys to this would be blasting out on the Speakers.

    I loved sunday nights.....

  • Rose McDowall… DIJ… C93…

  • I LIKE THIS ONE AND SHERRIE AUSTINS COVER ALSO!

  • its too over produced..i wouldnt be surprised if stock-waterman were behind it

  • They didn't have auto-tune back then that any idiot could pick up a microphone and do a cover.

  • This is freaking FANTASTIC!!!

  • amm yeah i dont see her having ANY problems loving again..

  • I like Queen Adreenas version better but this was still ace ;0)

  • fucking excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great cover

  • I haven't find single performer who perform this song badly! It's masterpiece!

  • And there i was thinking Strawberry Switchblade were a one hit wonder!! I was so wrong??!!

  • A Dolly Parton song...did not know that back then...nice performance ..jill and that other nice girl..

  • wot a load of cock and nonsense....

  • It's Dolly Parton meets Dead or Alive! I remember this back in the day...cool.

  • fuck me the 80's were awful werent they! shame cos her voice isnt too bad.

  • @kevsickboy the 80's awful? dude the 80's were like the years of the real rockn'n roll, punk and metal it were the years were freedom was still a right!!!

  • @ironhuman1 sorry man, i cant agree. and it was what people would call 'my era'. but glad you're getting something from the memory. :)

  • just before they split up they came up with the best song of their career .

  • Justin Bieber's cover of Jolene is so much better than this!

  • This is perfect because Jill is supposed to be Jolene, and they both have red hair.

  • she was my first teen crush

  • I think I'm in love with Jill Bryson.

  • @scottvska Yeah she's hot. Love a babe like her.

  • i always loved this

  • Yes- with a bit of electro, pop-goth thrown in on some of their tracks.

  • alright fur a couple of weegies!!lol

  • 1st song I ever danced to...

  • @cjm010771 me to

  • They can take my love anytime!!!!!!!

S**t hot music n please come back

  • Long live the eighties and the great cover songs from this time !!!

  • This version could deflate dolly instantly.

  • I'd take these girls instead of Jolene any day. ;)

  • I cannot believe someone has Strawberry Switchblade on YouTube!!! wow!!! what a find!!!!

  • Oooooh, the day they appeared on Saturday Superstore with Sarah Greene is a day that will live long in the memory.

  • The lead singer looks like Death from Neil Gaimen's Sandman comics :P Anyways awesome cover :P

  • @Kobalos her name is Rose McDowell i think

    but yeah she dose

  • Great 80's cover version of Dolly Parton.:)

  • This is the most interesting version of this song I've ever heard. O_O And I like it. :D

  • Country song Jolene in a typical 80s beat version...GOD I LOVE IT!!!

  • @thomasclowes You should check out the Darcy Clay cover! Predates the White Stripes and is also raw, emotional, male vocal... awesome.

  • White Stripes? Ha! The 2000s would have been better if every hipster band didn't rip off the same bands! Hardly groundbreaking.

  • Who did The White Stripes rip off? ya nuggit!!!!!!!

  • what same sound? drum machines sounded naturally and beats where quite different, not disasterous "boom-boom" of the 90-ies.

  • this is the best cover of Dolly Parton's, excellent !

esse é o melhor cover de dolly parton's, excelente !

  • Muito linda . Essa é a melhor versão de todas !!!

  • ROSE.

  • 'Secrets' by Straberry Switchblade definately has gothic inclination.

  • Yes, something gothic going on-the name Strawberry Switchblade is gothic.

    'Since yesterday'- 'chewing -gum goth?'

  • ransmyr your forgetting alice cooper. hes a goth and was for almost ten years before this :P

  • Goth before goth existed!

  • HAHHAHAHA this was WHEN goth existed. It don't exist now hahah

  • Well, actually Goth is one of the largest alternative cultures in the world since a few years! And the word Goth for it was not invented yet in the years for Strawberry Switchblade, but they were close to a style then called "new romantic".

  • The alternative lifestyle and culture may exist, but all these kids listen to is Symphonic metal and emo.

  • @ransmyr "Goth" was definitely around when Strawberry Switchblade were but they were a bit pop-y for it then - mission, nephelim, siouxie, bauhaus were more goth at the time. They were 'a bit' gothic, mainly in their appearance rather than the music, but not really new romantic as fsr as I remember - but it was a long time ago ;-)

  • @simondust1 Its proabably safe to say that Strawberry Switchblade were Pop- Goth

  • @dali366 I'd agree and go with "pop-goth.

  • I love Rose's hair in this video

  • i like this back then...still liking this today...

  • All of today's artists are covering older songs and make them sound crap. But in the 80's when the artists made cover of even older songs, it sounded fantastic! I love this version, it's fantastic! I love the

    80's!

  • Agreed, covers today seem to deminish the original music, turning them into darker, grungier versions of the original, where in the 80's our music was aimed at fun, colour, energy, optimism, --dance music which made you musically high, was whimsical (as was the intent of our fashions), and hauntingly melodic with lots of spine-tingling ambient electronic overtones! To be in a dance club then was pure, absolute and unadulterated HEAVEN!!!

  • @Jessicacool90 It is true that there are also a lot of bad music today but don't let Nostalgia fool you

  • @JapaneseModernist agree with that so much. For me having being born in the the very last dying months of the 80s it's so easy to feel an overwhelming nostalgia for times long past when music got just as bad. The 60s could have been awful to some people, it was just an important time that will never happen again without reason but 80s nostalgia is at least a bit more lighthearted. But god I adore Strawberry Switchblade......

  • @Jessicacool90 Agree 100%.

  • @Jessicacool90 Damn right. Yeah back in the 80s when older songs were being covered it really made it cool. Nowadays we have all these garbage pop stars these days covering 80s songs and it makes them sound like crap indeed. 80s songs should be left alone.

  • @Jessicacool90 i agree with you

  • @Jessicacool90 I agree with you !

  • @Jessicacool90 You can't categorize the quality of covers by a single decade; I think your comment is in a good-natured place, but that's just kind of ridiculous.

  • Shut up XD

  • srry wrong user i didnt mean to write those comments to u srry

  • dude wat the hell did kevjumba do to u i mean y r u so raciset against asians maybe u eat ur own poop and u just want to blame it on other people u suck

  • I liked it..wasn't really into the not so faint hint of Dolly Parton-esque vocals..I know, hard to escape that when covering Dolly Parton but must say I expected better..White Stripes cover is immense

  • Jack White is the BEST, The White Stripes

  • Seriously, if you like the original better and think this sucks, I'm sorry to say you have terrible taste. Country music is possibly THE worst genre of music there could ever be, aside from the majority of rap music.

  • I agree with Johnny Switchblade - cool name by the way

  • I like Rose a lot, but it's funny how her singing just gets falser by the years...

  • They are superb....WHy aren't they around today.... *Cries*

  • Check online, she's performing under a self-titled band (rose mcdowall) she's still working on new albums and all.

  • A Starck Club - Dallas, Texas classic!

  • Country sucks, so automatically this version is better in my opinion. Plus, Rose McDowell was a total fox in that one-piece leather suit and that big hair!

  • that's rude, it's the 80's, people had diff taste, she has a good voice, maybe with a diff beat and a diff tempo, it would be great NOW, but back in the 80's, a version of msic now would make them 'throw up a little bit'

  • I love them. How did I miss this back then??

  • a hink this cover is reel good :L

  • Eh, I don't think the synthpop sound really suits this song.

  • Brings back memories of my club days back in the eighties... Sweet!!!!!

  • lets face it no one can do a cover of a dolly parton song and make it better

  • i think its good for what it is.

  • ahh i dont realy like this 1 its rly bad...(just my opinion) they messed it up

  • WTF ur talking about my NAME u REATARD

  • Best version ever!

  • only good version of this song. imho

  • its not bad..

  • I have to agree with ThaVoid and darkwolf6885

this one also seems to miss the point.

  • rose mcdowell..yum, yum!!!

  • Spike (Peter) if yer reading this ... gizza nudge :o)

  • This is a great 80's version of the song. It's a cover, yes, but you just can't compar this ith Dolly's. I think both are great though!

  • This is a great version of a great song - I read they loved Dolly Parton and wanted to do a version of this because they were such fans of hers. These girls were playing with pop, and when they were finished playing they threw it all away.

  • I haven't even thought about this band until I started playing around with this site! Peter Murphy, Fuzzbox, Siouxie and the banshees, I'm having so much fun !!!

  • not awful, but I like the original better

  • this has to be one of the most covered songs ever, nice version

  • Hm.

I quite like it. There`s just something about ths song that`s so addictive hm.... >.>

  • Apparently this was meant to be a bit different beat wise. More like New order.

  • i love this version, i remembered this version AGES ago, i prefer this to the dolly parton's origonal

  • wicked

  • First, these two were definitely part of the proto-goth scene in the '80s. But to say a Dolly Parton song is or isn't goth is stupid. And I don't think the SS version was supposed to be compared to Parton's version. It was recorded as a DANCE SONG, made for the underground club scene in the '80s. I can't help you if you think '80s music was all Oingo Boingo and B52's. If you weren't a dork in the 80's you were in clubs dancing to songs like this. Halcyon days to be sure.

  • cool cover version

  • eardrums...bleeding...help!

  • They were very popular also in Japan in 80s. This tune is one of their greatest songs, I think. Thank you for the posting!

  • ahah better than the Sisters of Mercy ^_^

  • no.....unless your on crack good but not better then the sister of mercy..

  • I can't beleive anyone else has looked them up. I first listened to them in 1991. My Japanese girlfriend on Okinawa turned my on to them.

  • Just a tad bit better than the cover by Queen Adreena. This one was at least tolerable.

  • Quite a lot, dear. They came from the Glasgow proto-goth movement, and if you're not convinced of their goth credentials, have a look at the vid for 'since yesterday', and check out their look- especially Rose! Early 80s goths looked inevitably rather different to today's crowd. And it being the 80s, synths were permitted to be part of goth, alas- I think they would have been better off synth-free, but you can't have it all...

  • Still just as fantastic so many years later.

  • Wow! goth-o-rama. Back-combing beats the current crop of pathetic goth haircuts every time. Ah, brings it all back, days of my youth etc etc. Rose & Jill- show these comb-forward Kate Nash-ites how it's done!

  • what have they got to do with Goth?

  • Have you seen them???

Maybe their music isn't goth, but they've got beautiful goth style...Beautiful...They really knew how to dress!

  • that's cool poser just like you

  • you 23 and useing the word poser Im in highschool and dont use that word...

Being jugmental of one other then self means.. your ethier conceaded or just a plan dumb ass.

for your stake and the rest of peoples deont use such a stupid word.

  • no your a (dumb ass).... everyone pease ecuse the dumb ass...

"im old school , you little piece of shit and yeah you are a poser" dude your older then me and use poser are you still in fucking high school your Pathidic shut up...

"you will get a dick slap jajajaja eat a dick nigga"

what the fuck are you talking about are you in like remissions class at the age of 23 or something AHHAHA!

    Retard much?

  • Um humm Btw I`m not emo and never will be. when emos start listening to my kinda music I`ll be shocked. P.S:emos tend to try and be as hardcore as posable thats why their anyoing. Now do what I do educate the stupid.

  • these were not trying to be hardcore, this was done in the 80's, b4 trying to educate others, try educating yourself first!

  • Wth are you talking about. This band is dark wave and trying to be cute. Which they are good at^-^. I noticed it was done in the 80's however the "emo kids" like hardcore music.

  • dark wave...hahahahaha

  • Gothic music was style on a cycle of fusion of glam and down tempo beats mixed with morbid or sometimes very odd vocals. Sometimes makeing it seem they were very junked up. If you listen to the music of sisters of mercy they used alot of synths in their music to..then swicthed to a more rock statment.

good bye for now me friend.

  • this is the dolly parton song! how great to hear another version. i love dolly, but this is good too.

  • Rose will always be sexy !

  • i was a young boy then god they were sexy bet they still are

  • I think i heard this joint on Beverly Hills Cop.

  • great

  • this version is better stop fucking hating bitches

  • So you haven't heard the Sisters of Mercy's version? That one gives me the bad goosebumps

  • Fuckin shit---give me Fuzzbox anyday!

  • I've got a fuzzbox, and they bloody stink.

  • i love this version

i used to run around singing the dolly parton version as a kid .

    ahaha

  • I never heard of Strawberry Switchblade until I found a link to this video on a website.....definitely catchy. I like it.

  • My name is Jolene and people sing my name a rediculous amount of time's before they get over it. I have never heard this version before. and must say it wasn't very impressive. No one will out sing dolly on this one.

  • Just how many men have you taken,Jolene?

  • Fuck off, Jolene.

  • Queen Adreena's cover was better.

  • crap thats all i say crap crap crap pleaseeeee dont sing it in this style does not work

  • shut the fuck up al of you haters.

this is just the strawberry switchblade version , their style. nice version.

  • Whatever! You must not have been pretty hip to things in the late '80's. This was totally the shit...

  • ugh. your comment brought me back to this. i almost wiped it out of my memory.

  • bad luck
