Just want to say that the z31 is a great car, i have an 85 300zx turbo and its pretty quick but in no way is it good on gas, no turboed Z is good on gas 15 mpg or so for me :(
@MaverickXeo Not calling you a liar but thats really hard to believe, even if you look it up online (fueleconomy.gov) or any other source, its saying 15/22 or less (on the turbo model) and thats if you have it bone stock and in perfect mechanical condition.. but anyways just pointing that out, if yours got 28mpg dont ever get rid of it because you got a real good one, and sports cars r meant to be driven hard so fuel economy is always going to suck lol
@iiMGorgeousBabii The fuel economy website is based on 'real world' numbers; IE, no one will drive modestly; everyone will use A/C or have a window open. Heck, Ive checked my 02 TJ sport (lifted) and my 96 grand cherokee and I exceed the numbers on BOTH vehicles as well. When I 'try' to get good mileage, I go the limit, dont use A/C, and dont have my windows down.
Its all about playing with boost on turbo cars; stay out of boost = great fuel economy due to lower compression.
@iiMGorgeousBabii If you tune up your z31 nicely, and hook up a boost gauge (if you dont) and head out on the highway, staying out of boost, you should achieve nice MPG.
My NA2T swap however, will get close to the EPA rating; due to higher fuel flow. (Not for a while though; I havent had a turbo Z for a while, so I will want to... make sure it all works well ;) )
Hmm.. doesn't sound as good as a straight 6 turbo but very nice for V6. i just picked upan 87 300zx turbo manual in good condition so hopefully she provides a few years of reliable fun!
DUde HI i found a 300 zx 1987 with a turbo...now i dont know shit about this car but tomorrow im gonna go to the junkyard and remove the turbo and put it in my honda civic what do you guys think?? should i go for it its only 70 bucks with tax....now i know to look for slack etc... and wear and tear.... but if i can rebuild it for 100?? i have a good turbo?? also...ur opinion please...is it journal bearing or wat?? is it?? comment back guys l8tz....
onefast87: What did you do to your transmission? The throw on your shifter looks much shorter than stock. Tho I have an 89na so I don't have the same transmission.
@zfoxfire I bought a S13 short throw shifter from ebay. All that was needed to make it work with the 30A trans was using the 30A plastic cup from the stock shifter.
im buying a 1985 turbo today . it sucks cuz i just spent 6 months and 3000 bucks fixing a 1984 non tubo zx and some jackass without insurance or a license totalled it
@onefast87 how many liters fit in your tank?? i get 600km on a v8 5.7 liter truck but then again i have 90L in the tank......dont talk about liters per tank it means nothing... do km/L or Miles/G anything but not "tank"
@jazzmusicplayer I have an 89 N/A and get around 24 to 26mpg but I still have a lot of stuff to fix. I'm sure the Turbo would be slightly better on gas but depends on how you drive. New 370 is also rated at 26hwy, 16 city. But I've never gotten less than 22.
As for reliability, 284k and still running strong! :)
It's usually not a great idea to rest your hand on the shift knob while your not actually shifting. I understand you kept it there because you planned on shifting through the whole range of gears, but with normal driving, the weight of your hand puts stress on the transmission gears and over time slowly grinds them. I have seen a few cases of transmission gears being worn out due to this, and though it's not much, it affects reliability. [Continue to next message....]
i think the newer cars got the better it gets about that tho. when i bought my 69 bug i was told never to put my hand on the shifter because ill grind my gears and bushings but i have a cobalt and they said it wont hurt anything on it

Sounds windy, but I'm pretty sure you weren't moving. Not sure, couldn't see any road or signs or houses or anything to gauge. You might wanna do this over. Just a thought.
im doing 274 schinder regrind cams, port polish w/ceramic coatings 1mm oversized ferra valves and upgraded springs retainers, extruded manifolds with ceramic coatings gt30r with internal wastegate, intercooled, engloid style plenum, ported lower intake man, 550cc skyine injectors, maxima alt, greddy ultamate... i dont plan on getting more than 400hp...
stock turbos are fun, i never got the chance to just drive with the fidanzda wheel and exhaust, my clutch never slipped before the rebuild, how much more power do you feel besides the sound?

@iiMGorgeousBabii My old turbo auto 85 300zx would get 28+ MPG on the highway if I drove modestly. Driving hard it would drop to 10MPG.

These cars are very reliable, i would run 10lbs of boost and i could get 450km per tank roughly.

And that's not something you want to have in the back of your head when your dealing with 600-700 horse power.
I just wanted to throw that out to the people driving manuals :D
Very nice car by the way!
