  • No more changes after this huh Alex, how about 3 more changes, is that what you really meant?

  • Check it out everybody, a lot of stuff was goin' on during the Gary Cherone morphisis of Van Halen. Personal stuff with all the (original) band members. Gary and Ed hit it off and were fairly close. Even though VH 3 was an enigma of sorts and reflected the tone of life at that point, I know Gary was a good friend to Ed as well as a positive influence. It ended after 3', but that was the nature of the beast. Gary just couldn't walk in the shoes of the ones before, he's deeper than that.

  • Gary cherones body language is very telling

  • Cherone is the best singer VH ever had, they should've replaced Eddie by Nuno too, that would've been even better.

  • Gary sucks! Sammy and Dave are Van Halen... Not this clown..

  • Ed looks REALLY pissed off in this

  • Van Halen #1

  • wow Eddie looks really bad in this interview

  • HE NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO SMILE ,DANCE AND GET SOME SWAG AND HE WOULD MAKE SAMMY AND DAVE LOOK LIKE LUNCH MEAT!!!

  • Alex says: "This is going to be the last change. No more after this."

    Classic..

  • I thought Gary did okay with Van Halen. I believe he was treated the same way Dave Navarro did when he joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

  • People keep slating Gary but it was Eddie & Alex who brought him to the band. They believed in him and his talent. It's a shame the fans didn't see this and support the band like proper fans and help them through a transitional phase. What was left was no VH and we still have no VH. I hope the haters are happy.

  • @rmtdrums um VH3 was teeeerrrriiibbble , i blame ed just as much as gary ,

  • @rmtdrums Van Halen is a brand name just like Coca Cola and McDonalds. If McD's brings in a burger that no one is buying don't blame the consumer

  • @mlmr11 How can you compare Eddie Van Halen to a Big Mac?? Bloody ridiculous. All the hard work and effort VH have put in over the years, they deserved some loyalty from their fans or have all rock fans turned into American Idol watching disposable pop shit. God you make me angry. Fuck! Fuck it I’m off to eat a Mc Donalds!.

  • @rmtdrums Are you kidding me ...The Big Mac is god damn delicious and good company to be mentioned with!!

  • Poor Finland...first time VH shows up and it's with Gary and the VH III album. Too bad they didn't get to see the all the Sammy tours, especially the FUCK and Balance tours...and some of the DLR tours from earlier times.

  • @Rockywaves73 throw Australia in there as well

  • Comment removed

  • this was Van halen at its worst, gary cherone what was Eddie thinking really surprised at that decision...

  • Gary Cherone sucks!!!!!!! He was way below what I deem a Van-Halen lead singer. They touted him (when they 1st came out) as the Voice of Sammy and the Acrobatics of David Lee Roth. Not even close!

  • @Davey28car yes, worst singer they ever had..

  • They would of been better off with Sebastian Bach or Ralph from the Atomic Punks.

  • @ciadella1971 Or Joe Lynn Turner

  • Van Halen III was okay, but I really don't think that Eddie and Sammy were really meant to part. I've seen the 98 interviews and performances, it seemed like Gary was there for a "revenge on Sammy" than to actually propel the band forward into the 21st century. I think I'm with a lot of people when I suggest that there should've been another Sammy follow up to Balance.

  • amen. (spot on )

  • @RichardLaarge Gary was there for revenge on Sammy? Revenge for what?!? Gary and Sam had no beef.

Gary was a hired gun and he knew that. Ed wanted complete control of the band. Ed ruined VH III not Gary.

  • @TheHockeyCentral Oh no I meant Eddie was out for revenge on Sammy, but I don't really know what that means 2 years later. I do love VH3, totally agree that the "radio unfriendly" nature of the material is what stopped them from carrying on (and why apparently Gary left amicably). A shame, they had some real charisma as a band. Perhaps not as the Van Halen everybody knew, but you can't argue that the live performances were pretty amazing.

  • gary looks like a queer,

  • I think I agreed with you? lol

  • LOL.......I'm amazed to hear people in here calling Cherone the "greatest singer" for Van Halen.......how much crack do you morons smoke?

Cherone was ALL WRONG for Halen.......so was Hagar........just go watch the '81 Oakland footage of "Unchained" and tell me Diamond Dave wasnt the ultimate frontman! He was the reason Van Halen made it big in the first place..........wake up, dummies.

  • Dave , for all intents and purposes , was the worst of the three singers in the band.

And I would argue that Dave is really a singer as much as he is a crooner /showman.

However , I would agree with you with the band being at it's best with Dave.

The reason is that the band was innovative on two fronts - the showmanship of Dave and the playing of Eddie.

By the time Sammy joined the band the innovation was now mainstreamed and the singer to be added was "safe and uninspiring".

  • I'm still baffled why people give Sambo so much credit as a better singer than Dave. If being able to hit certain notes is all that matters, then why didnt Eddie hire Steve Perry when Dave left in 1985 ???

A legendary rock band is more than just hitting the right notes........it's an attitude and a philosophy. Roth brought a lot to the table and singing was only part of the package........that's what so many Van Hagar fans fail to see........the real magic was lost when Dave left.

  • Ed looks like trash in this video, he looks a lot better now!

  • yeahhh when alex said there were gonna be no more changes little did he no

  • I honest;y think that VH with Gary couldve been great with a couple of killer hits and like 3 more albums...i mean dave was with em for 6 yrs professionally, sammy 10 yrs, and if gary stayed it would be 10 yrs now. who knows???

  • Finally someone who agrees with me about Cherone! He was the scapegoat when VH III didn't sell. I saw VH twice on that tour and from a technical standpoint, he's the best singer VH has ever had and I think he's every bit the showman/frontman that Roth is without being the pretentious jackass. Yeah, VH with Cherone couldv'e grown into something great!

  • See I 'm going to tell you the problem with Gary Cherone.

He's not a bad singer. He's adequate enough to front a band.

The problem is simply this :

He is a caricature of a Rock and Roll star.

That is to say that he is extremely cliche and passe.

Everything he does has already been done and , in most cases, he's the fourth party to plagiarize the style.

This is the reason for his inability to make any kind of headway within the industry no matter how much the suits push him on the consumer.

  • spoken like a true rock critic. Well done.

  • You're welcome.

Would you like some insight into the Electric Slide phenomenon ?

  • Nope. I don't read the critics unless I need a good laugh. I'm glad though that people with no musical/entertainment talent do find their niche as writers though.

  • I didn't expect you to agree with me.

I was hoping for a more intellectual discussion as opposed to the inadequate and overused rebuttal in which you had used.

Much like the substance lacking in Garys style, so to was the substance in your post comment.

When defending a position you should stay away from ad hominid attacks as it shows an insufficient knowledge of the subject at hand.

I'm just trying to help you out for the future.

    No thanks necessary .

I love my fellow man .

    You're welcome

  • There's nothing to discuss really. I like VH III for what it was and think that Cherone is a terrific singer and frontman- you don't.

I don't need to defend my position any more than I have to defend my favorite restuaraunt. It's taste. Only pretentious mensa wannabes would argue about music- especially rock.

Now go back to knowing everything.....

  • @chris1969kw Well at least your intelligent enough to know that . Bravo on you.

  • In addition to this I'd like to add that "Without You " and "Fire in the Hole" are fantastic pieces of work.

The same album with the same music most likely , I'm pontificating now, would have gone platinum had Sammy been the singer.

    Is Sammy a better singer?

    They're equally "average" .

Sammy just has the credibility that Cherone doesn't , and won't ever , have as long as he continues in this genre.

  • @vanhlnfan4life Gary is not a world class musician so this really was a case of subtraction by addition. It would be like trying to put a high school junior varsity hockey player on a line with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

If you want to look at the success or lack thereof of The Extreme you really don't need to look further than Gary

  • 2:26 yeah Gary that was equally surprising to me

  • Van Halen wasn't mighty with Cherone. But, the whole "Van Halen is Kiss w/o the make up part" was funny as hell.

  • Cherone was mighty at the Channel in Boston circa 1987. A big time player he is far from.

Getting past the fact that he fronted a band that was, for all intents and purposes, a Van Halen cover act is just too hard a sell to a discriminating fan base like Van Halens.

He's in his element at this time fronting a Who cover act.

  • perry would not have joined eddie to begin with. and steve perry was the best ever
