  • At least they had f---ing jobs to pour out of the busses to go to.

  • Is he not on "Your Very Good Health"? I recognize him in establishing the British NHS in 1948.

  • Okay, so this is why there are shit holes like Telford

  • 4:10 "You've ruined my favourite pub sir!" :-D

  • This propaganda film is hilarious in retrospect, who really wants to live half a mile up in the sky in a lego set buil by the council?

  • So that's how Britain became the green, sunny suburban utopia it is today.

  • shop chippy pub!

  • NYC and Chicago style hi-rises is the best choice.

  • And everyone lived happily ever after...

  • What I find the most accurate about this is how complaints make things happen. Bold new ideas pale in comparison to whining.

  • Some twenty years later, this is exactly the way Milton Keynes was built. Then, 15 years ago, the politicians decided we needed to repeat the errors of all the other towns, fill in the pedestrian underpass crossings, put it traffic lights everywhere, stop the main roads, make parking as difficult as possible, unreliable public transport, etc. Still it was nice while they respected the plan...

  • I have such a fondness for animated propaganda.

  • @sygo7g Ah yes, I can see how well it worked for Los Angeles. Branching out, big suburban and exurban homes, and NO TRAFFIC AND NO SMOG, shyeah.

  • "Shall we shout,

    Shall we scream,

What happened to the post-war dream ....?"

  • Yes, thank for those who are sharing their knowledge and informations.

There is another very famous Hungarian animator, Attila Dargay. I do not know if you heard about him or not yet. /Unfortunately he died a fes weeks ago at age 82/ If you like cartoon, probably you know character of Vuk, the little fox and so many others...

Charley in New Town is interesting me not just because of its wonderful humor but the deep detailed knowledge of planning of a new area /town, etc./

  • Wow, this is so exciting! Thank you for this information. :)

  • Yet another treasure from BFI-funny thing is,many people back in the post-war era were very sceptical about these types of ideas, which is probably why a film like this was made-thanks so much!

  • Terrific film. Disagree with the comments on USA. The New York skyline is fabulous. Just look at the banal towns in the UK.

  • It wouldn't have been like Manhattan though, it would have been even more grotty flats.

  • It was a good idea, you can't tell what's going to change in the future though. If you visit any new town you can see it never really quite panned out the way planners wanted it to.

  • I like this, nice smooth animation, and a reasonable, if possibly difficult to attain, message.

I just like the part where in the meeting, the man says "...then the industrial revolution happened." WHAM! It just happened!

    Cheeky.

  • This kind of planning hasn't happened in most places because no one anticipated the kind of growth that would occur later. Who does? Even with the best of intentions, other factors intervene. Just look what happened to the ultra master planned city of Brasilia, Brazil.

  • Fabulous. Thanks so much for this. Unfortunately, we here in the states never learned this lesson.

  • America has never learned this lesson (sigh)

  • John Halas or Halász? Was he Hungarian?

  • The animation in this film is very attractive. This must have been a fairly expensive effort.
