@amberkschurch And just so you know, I am proud and happy that Whitehorse did a vote mob, with a unique twist to boot, and my comments are directed only at the candidates issue. Once again, good job and good luck with your party.
Cool video...but why wasn't John Streicker included in the video? The point of these vote mobs is to encourage voting and to be non partisan, but by excluding the Green party, this can no longer be considered a non partisan vote mob. I understand that he may not have been able to come (or worse didn't want to come out), but I still don't think that the Green party should have been excluded.
@wrenalison Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately the reality of the situation is we cannot force candidates to participate in any events. John Streicker was made aware of this event, along with all of the other candidates (and some could argue he was more aware thanks to being a good friend of Amber and myself, the organizers). Why he did not choose to attend is not mine to discuss, but you should not consider a event to be non-partisan if some candidates choose not to attend.
Lol! The cute stick figure idea is a creative one, but you wouldn't need to go through so much effort. There are two things that could have been done here: 1) If he couldn't physically be there, why not go on Google and find a picture of him and include that beside the other candidates? 2) If he didn't want to be shown in it, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from including a Green Party logo (while you’re at it, include the other party logos under the other candidates if you want).
The truth of the matter is, no matter what the situation was that stopped the Green Party from being in the video, having them not in the video makes it look like you are doing exactly what tv executives did to Elizabeth May, no matter how good your (or his) excuse might be.
Frankly, if you felt including the Green Party in the video would go against your friend’s wishes causing a rift, than you should have completely left out all of the candidates to maintain the integrity of what vote mobs represent – a call to vote.
@wrenalison Thanks again for the comments. However, I think it is important to acknowledge the effort of the candidates who did show up. By including candidates who chose not to, you are in effect diminishing the efforts of those that took the time (right before a debate). The decision to not have any political party signs is important as well. We do not mention who is who, simply that these candidates came out. Anything that has party logos will look more partisan, even with all logs.
@wrenalison Aslo, and although this is not the case here, penalizing other parties (by removing a mention of their presence at the event) on account of a single party not attending is quite unfair. Non-partisan (to me) means that we are not advocating that you vote for a particular party, it doesn't mean that all parties are present. This is precisely why there is no mention AT ALL of what parties were in attendance.
@alkhem The fact that you don't name the parties doesn't matter, this is the Yukon, we all know who the candidates are and what party they are in! As I said before, no matter what the excuse is - it looks bad on video. It looks like you are making a political statement (excluding the video from the nonpartisan category) even if you aren't! In my opinion, it would have been better to simply not invite candidates, since that is not what vote mobs are about.
@wrenalison All this said, I do understand that thanks to the TV exec snub of the Green party there is some underlying need for equal representation at all events... but I think you cannot skew the reality of what took place at a particular event.
@alkhem What we did at my university was invite candidates to talk to students (without signage) and answer any questions or concerns, but they were not filmed or put into the video. And the final video product has the message that youth will vote and that we do care, there is no mention of any party/candidate.
@alkhem I appreciate Whitehorse trying to do something different, but in this case unfortunately, I don't think it was very effective. I liked the one take idea though, that was very clever and a good kind of different.
@wrenalison I think you`re being unnecessarily harsh. I think it`s awesome that the candidates who were able to show up did, and I think it`s awesome that they were celebrated for a of couple seconds for doing so. Just because John couldn`t make it doesn`t mean everyone else shouldn`t be thanked or that he was excluded (and I know from John personally that he loves the video and doesn`t care that he`s not in it).
@wrenalison I think you`re being unnecessarily harsh. I think it was great of the candidates to who could to show up and I think it was great to celebrate that. I don`t think John`s absence was exclusionary - he`s simply couldn`t make it (and on a personal note I know directly from him that he loves the video). The Yukon Youth Rock the Vote Campaign has been working with all the political parties to raise the vote: from the all-candidates youth forum, to tonight`s party....
@amber I think you're missing my point, and I don't think repeating it will help. But I will add: yes, I think it's great some candidates came out to support this vote mob. Does that mean they should appear in the video? I think that the answer is no. In my opinion they don't have a place there. You can celebrate them off camera too (and it's not like they're not getting anything by coming out). It's great Streicker likes the video, but, if you look at my other comments, that doesn't matter.
@wrenalison ...to the mural we painted yesterday on the Green Party's offices (do you think that was partisan? because the other political parties didn't but it could certainly have appeared as such). Believe me when I say I worked all-out to get Elizabeth May into those debates and I was deeply upset when she wasn't there, but I don't think we should let that incident taint our impression of every good-intentioned thing that has happened since. Why not instead celebrate....
@wrenalison the good intentions, even if not perfectly executed in everyone's minds....afterall that vote mob took a lot of work and effort and we should be thanking those involved for doing that....if we instead attack them they'll be way less likely to come out and participate next time. Finally, since you're obviously passionate about the issues why don't you join the party and the chalking at Tippler's tonigt...you could talk to people in person instead of online
@amberkschurch Please read my comments more carefully. I'm not saying you are the tv executives, only that from your video it LOOKS like it. Secondly, if you read my comments you'll notice that I'm not in Whitehorse currently (although I am voting there and lived there all my life), and I helped plan my university's vote mob. It's good to hear that you are doing some positive things in the community, but I can't talk about those.
@amberkschurch All I have is the video (and that is all some people will see) and you have to be aware of how the video looks outside of the context of everything else you may be doing. That is a responsiblility of a filmmaker, to understand how their video will look just as it is with no other outside information. Hopefully, people watching will read this discussion and understand a little about why Streicker isn't in it and won't take offense. Good luck with your party tonight.
@amberkschurch ...and I'm not attacking people who came out and participated, I'm not even attacking the organizers personally, I have tried to keep my comments civil so as not to attack any one personally. I am simply taking issue with the decision to include candidates in the video, and especially if not all candidates could be represented. I will say this one last time: It doesn't matter what the excuse was - on film, it looks bad!

Rather than vilify John for not attending (with some form of cute dancing stick figure cartoon), we chose to simply celebrate those who did attend.
