2 The UK did declare war on Germany Sept 3, 39

@CSATexan Actually the USSR helped Germany attack Poland and conquered multiple Eastern European countries, before WW2 officialy started. Stalin kept trying to deal with Hitler so he wouldn't attack USSR, and thought helping Hitler conquer Europe would keep him away. Later the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact would be signed, which was a truce between USSR and Germany. Though Stalin would soon learn that he shouldn't believe Hitler would be a person you would trust.

He makes a joke about the British Empire being made by sticking flags everywhere, but I've been reading a book by some historian about how conquest was effectively done, and he's spot on. Every explorer sent out was given guidelines on how to conduct a "ceremony" to claim the land; one criteria was to force some of the native population to attend so then it could be claimed "they handed over the land to a superior people." Quite absurd but interesting.

I spent a summer in at U of Exeter (1992) in law, and went back as a tourist in (1999)-we drove (!) from Oxford to the West Country; starting in London and taking the train to Oxford to pick up our motorcar. Things like "dual carriageways" and British B and B's (which are literally a bed and breakfast-please, no cooked breakfast!), and my personal favorite, the "identification parade" for a police lineup- left me and my summer school classmates stifling laughter to the point of sobbing.
